god i'm sick of rehashed dance versions of classic songs!!!

Has nobody any talent anymore than putting a drum beat over a old song and getting some woman in her knickers to sing a bit of it!.

havent thought bout it much but:

call on me .......... is valerie by steve winwood

if i had another chance (think thats what r.sanchez called it) ...... is i wont hold you back by toto

that boogie pimps `somebody to love' sounds VERY familiar as well.

fat boy slim has just STOLEN `the joker' by the steve miller band for HIS latest single as well

oh and i heard mike and the mechanics `all i need is a miracle' bon jovi's `living on a prayer' and even u2's `vertigo' re-hashed... im sure there are thousands more.

no talent, no royalties...... i guess this is why most these people are only about for a few months then you never hear from them again.

any other classics ruined by this talented bunch of drum machine wizzards! :gag:

How has FBS stolen it? He's used the same title and credited Steve Miller on the CD. Therefore Miller will presumably get writer's royalties. It's just a straight cover version. What's the problem?

I'm no fan of dance music, but in this instance you're barking up the wrong tree.

yes its a STRAIGHT COVER.

wheres the talent there?

quality video. but sod the song. might as well buy the original. just annoys me that it is `FAT BOY SLIM's - THE JOKER' when it's not.

covers should be banned from being singles. save em for b-sides. the way things are going the charts will just regurgitate till no original music gets thru.

The current charts suck anyway, it's all no talent boy bands full of airheads with washboard stomachs who look good to get fickle teenage lasses interested but couldn't sing or dance their way out of a paper bag... Either that or stupid rehashes of old stuff because nobody can be arsed to make original NEW songs any more.

I think covers are fine, all the best bands do it... although not always release them. I think the worst ones are when artists almost seem to pass them off as their own... examples of this are Blazin Squad with Crossroads, and Robbie Williams with She's the One... I have never seen them talk about these songs and give credit to the originals, they should at least do that.

Call on me was a big hit in Ibiza last year and gave a lot of people a lot of pleasure. Where is the harm?

To answer your points,

The original artist DOES get royalties on all samples.

The charts are crap anyway and have been for ages.

The "artists" who do the covers are often DJ's and producers who do so under pseudonyms so give the appearance of "1 hit wonders".

There is more really good new music around now than at any time I can remember since I was at college 16 years ago.

well anything can be popular in ibiza!

'no talent, no royalties...... i guess this is why most these people are only about for a few months then you never hear from them again.'

I meant the people who re-release get no royalties and limited `fame' so thats why they dont sustain any career in music.

there is good music around...just not in the charts.

Hey... that's got a good beat! We may be able to actually produce that (very Bill Bailey though)

Seriously, though, I understand your point about covers. I don't mind people re-working a record as much as a straight cover. If the original artist gives permission to someone else to use or re-record their work, then there's not really a problem.

The landslide success of the vastly-overrated 'call on me' remix has open the doors for a whole bunch of other 70s and 80s re-mixes, as the record labels will jump on the bandwagon to make some quick cash.

Mostly, they're fun dance records which won't last. The ones that really **** me off are 'bands' like westlife and boyzone who have never written their own records, yet pass off old hits as theirs to a younger generation who will not have heard them before. A recent example is gwen stefani's cover of an old Talk Talk record. Annoying.

I sort of know what you mean, but the example of Gwens covering of Talk Talk is an interesting one for me. On hearing that record it reminded me of the great original that I didn't own (but loved when it was released). So I bought the best of talk talk and now enjoy that and other of their tunes. Also there is a good dance remix of Gwens version that I have enjoyed in clubs and in my own mixes too.

So, although you, and I am sure others, don't like it - it has had its uses ;)

Most dissappointed with Fatboy Slims version of the Joker. Kept waiting for the beats to kick in and nothing happened. He's hardly changed it at all. The only good thing about it is the video.

That uniting Nations song - out of touch, is a Hall & Oates cover. Not sure if people knew that as the original artist doesn't get mentioned that I've seen.

Well said, MTheo!

I regard people like Fatboy Slim as parasites on other people's music - anybody can take music already created by someone else and re-arrange it/mess about with it a bit, and claim they've created something new. :gag:

No talent required - or respect for other artists.

And people with no true love for music couldn't seem to care less about it.

I was so glad when The Clash challenged Beats international on it a few years ago - BI had blatantly used The Clash's "Guns of Brixton" as the basis for 'their' song "Dub be Good to me". When called on it, they tried to claim it was a 'tribute' to the Clash - thankfully that didn't wash.

I wish a few more artists would do this - then we might get more original stuff in the charts - vain hope, I know

I'll get off my soapbox now. It just really annoys me

i was brought up with 80's/early 90's music. the main point in this argument is that without the tunes from these eras there wouldnt be cover versions etc etc just like the 50's/60's inspired the music of the 70's/80's decades.

my argument is with the youth element who buy these records. they slag you off for being into 80's/90's music but dont realise that the majority of the songs that they listen to are souped up versions of old classics.

im not saying all cover versions are crap. some are improvements on the originals but i would say 70% are ruined. band aid 20 for example i was eagerly awaiting just to see how it compared to the original. i think the sales from this record and its predecesor tell the story.

modern day artists have no talent when it comes to writing thier own material. look at boyzone for example. thier greatest hits album from around 5/6 years ago had 10 out of the 18 songs either copied or wrote by someone else.

give praise though to daniel bedingfield, a REAL artist who wrote songs from his own bedroom. other artists take note.......

i stand by my claim that NO COVERS or SAMPLED things should be allowed in the charts. it is not letting creative people get there songs heard so the music is just gettin predictable.

and yes i find it funny that 80's bashers are all bopping along to songs either written by top 80's singers/songwriters or are just remakes of their songs hahaha

as im typing this someone has told me that SWEET CHILD O MINE has been brought out as a dance song!!!!!!!!!!

my fave song ever!!!!!!!!!! i hope i never hear the bloody thing

Wouldn't it be nice though, if it was a sample of Peter Kay on Phoenix Nights instead of Axl Rose? "Woah, woah woah - sweet child o'mine!!!"

Yeah well Sheryl Crow covered it a while ago and had violin solo's instead of guitar! :headbang: not!
