View Full Version : Basic question: Can you install power steerring on a normal steering? Sony 05-02-2005, 20:17 I love my car but it needs PAS!! I'm struggling with the steering wheel so much!! Anyone knows if its possible, and how much it will cost? (polo M reg) Strix 05-02-2005, 20:24 Quit dragging the wheel round whilst stationary. make sure the car is crawling whilst turning the wheel, and it will be loads easier  Edit: It will wear your tyres less too (and you'll appreciate that when you see the price of tyres!) ukdavvy 05-02-2005, 21:47 It is possible to fit PAS to a non PAS car as retro fit However it will be so expensive you would honestly be better off selling your manual car, taking a hit on depreciation and costs, then buying a PAS car d WallBuilder 06-02-2005, 00:02 I always thought PAS was for the really big heavy cars and find it totally amazing that it now seems to be fitted as standard in many of the little light weights on our roads. PAS just means you turn the wheels whilst stationary which doesn't do your tyres any good at all. I drove a mk 5 cortina with PAS and then for a few days had an Ford Orion without PAS, the fist ten minutes were slightly strange and i kept on under steering but within half an hour I was fine. When I got my own car back first time round a corner and I almost mounted the pavement as I over steeered. I would imagine it would be possible to fit PAS, it would no doubt involve completely replacing the steerage system and then you'd have to declare your car as 'modified' which would make insurance slightly more of a problem. Sony 08-02-2005, 07:48 cost of fitting PAS?? jackthedog 08-02-2005, 10:13 How about buying one of those steering wheel knobs like forklift truck drivers use? Maybe cheaper... *Twinkle* 08-02-2005, 15:06 Lol I know what you mean about PAS. My car doesn't have it either and as a new driver, its like learning to drive all over again. When I turn one way, the wheels go another and I feel that its the exact opposite to PAS. Or maybe I'm just making a drama out of it all. I feel like I'm steering 20 times to get it in a "lock" but it is getting easier. It is a challenge and I think it will make us both appreciate PAS cars more when we get one. I don't think its worth paying out to have it fitted. I don't know how much it'd cost, but all "older" cars are a gamble and you've got to consider whether its worth such an investment. I'm waiting until I get my next car when I've finished uni until I get PAS. In the mean time, my biceps will just get stronger and stronger...! Skatiechik 08-02-2005, 15:16 I have retro fitted PAS to my van, Cost: £50 for the equipment (pump, mounting bracket, pas steering rack, pipes, etc) from someone who was scrapping a similiar car. Time: Around a days work. Added Cost: Getting the tracking re-done at a garage. beansfeast 08-02-2005, 15:18 Funny story: My wife and I went from a G reg Renault 19 to an R reg Fiat Punto several years ago now. We spent the first 3 months driving round in the Punto feeling very proud because we finally had PAS for the first time. That was until we had to take it into a garage for something and were told we didn't actually have PAS! Of course I wasn't embarrassed!! :hihi: Goes to show how heavy the Renault was to drive though... Sony 11-02-2005, 06:36 I just cannot get used to non powered steering cars. I nearly caused an accident yesterday!!!!! PENGUIN 11-02-2005, 06:47 Originally posted by Sony I just cannot get used to non powered steering cars. I nearly caused an accident yesterday!!!!! So why did you get the car then ? Why didnt you take a test drive ? If its that bad sell it and get another one you feel happy with. muddycoffee 11-02-2005, 07:24 Have you got enough air in the front tyres. If they are a little under inflated it often makes the steering much heavier. I used to have a renault 21 savanna [estate model] it was front wheel drive and didn't have PAS and the steering and clutch was so heavy that I sufferd a knee problem and had biceps like charles atlas. It was so heavy on the steering, that I once drove to work with a flat tyre on the front flapping about without noticing, and some kind person flagged me down. On this car when I topped up the front tyres to the high end of their correct range, the steering was considerably lighter. After that I had a Sierra estate, and being rear wheel drive didn't need PAS at all. The steering was extremely light. After that I had a Mondeo estate, back to Front wheel drive and with PAS. And I noticed that there were less turns on the steering wheel lock - to - lock. It would have been almost impossible to steer this car without the PAS on. I have driven hundreds of other, four wheeled vehicles over the last two decades of all kinds and you don't normally notice the steering. It sounds like your current car is badly designed with heavy steering. I would recommend swapping it. No, the car is lovely, and its in great nick, but the bloody steeering is much heavier than even a non PAS car. Tyres are all ok, I checked a few days ago. Really dunno what I could do:confused: muddycoffee 11-02-2005, 09:00 Originally posted by Sony I've just bought it and insured it! Believe me you will have your lighter steering. Sony 11-02-2005, 09:07 Basically the only thing I need is someone to take a look at it that won't charge me £30/hour to do that. I just a second hand PAS pump etc.. Any mechanic on here, wlling to do it for a smaller fee:D I mean I can manage- but there isn't a chance my girlfiend can pull that steering wheel!! |
