This looks like a decent location for a pub. I just wondered if anyone had been in and what you thought of the place?

I've heard there is a new landlord and wondered how he was getting on?

Is this the one at the top of Lydgate Lane (as opposed to the one on Commonside)?

I haven't been in for a while but whenever I have been in I've always thought it could be better. We used to play against their pool side. (They had a one-armed pool player who was very good indeed.)

Used to have Magnet on tap which always made up for the miserable surroundings. It's a five out of ten pub which with a bit of spit and polish could become an 8 out of tenner in my most humble, fancy-a-pint? opinion.

I didn't realise Mick & Lynn had come out of the Hallamshire (or The Madhouse) as it's also known.

Good luck to the new landlord

I'm just going on third hand info. May be wrong.

What kind of age group tends to go in there?

The guy who delivers Beer Matters to pubs up there had heard those rumours but they had been denied by the existing landlord - although I suppose that might be to ensure a fuss free exit...

I've never risked going in there due to reports i've heard- dont know how true they are. I've also heard it called the Madhouse!

Didn't know its rough - it could be my local but for the drag up the hill, I'd rather fall into the Grindstone even though its not the best pub in the world.

The few times I've made the trek to the Hallamshire, its always been empty - even on a Friday night.

It was a great pub when I lived up there last year. Very friendly staff. Real traditional pub feel to it.

Shame if it's changed hands.

Was in there late on Saturday night. The new landlord is making an effort. The 3 piece guitar band was very good although the pub was half empty. Seems to have a strong customer base of 'hard drinking' men - age grouped in 30's to 50's. No trouble, but I suspect heavy drinking could cause conflict at some time or other, although I think the landlord looked well capable of sorting out any problems. The band played 'I predict a riot' as their last number and invited one of the customers to sing. He sang the first few bars then forgot the words and proceeded to belch constantly loud and long into the mike ... time for me to exit.

Apparently he is serving free beer all weekend as a sort of promotional thing. Anyone can go in and have as much as they like for nothing.

can i ask how long the new managers have been in? went in a couple of weeks ago and it wasn't that great, so the change might have improved things.

Has it been cleaned up then? It was absolutely filthy when I went in a couple of years ago. - the one on Lydgate Lane, I mean.
