View Full Version : Sheffield Independent bars and pubs
Which do you think is the best independently owned bar or restaurant in Sheffield.
It cannot be part of a chain - so no 'all bar ones' or 'nandos'
It can however be part of a large brewery or pub company as long as they have no management involvement.
We are looking to put a website together to help promote local independent venues.
Have a think, if your not sure, then post your nominations and I’ll look into it.
I really like the Wig & Pen in town. It's made a massive success of itself since it changed. I believe they have received awards for their food and are highly recommended.
The food is nice and it has a nice atmosphere, it can get quite busy as it's not very small but they do have an upstaires room too which is very relaxed.
Independant clubs/venues - .zero, orchis, the room, boardwalk & adelphi.
im sure theres more thou.
sicubitt 06-02-2005, 01:59 I agree about the Wig and Pen. Has anybody been to that bar down by the canal? Very nice during the day when you can sit outside and watch the longboats. (Obviously not that great at this time of year)! Can't think what it's called...
funkster 06-02-2005, 12:44 Tequila on west street is probably one of the best independently owned bars and restaurants in sheffield .situated on west street and one of the most stylish venues .with there hard work and dedication it is one off the best places to go out either to drink or dine. it also won an award last year
The grapes on trippet lane, great guest ales, cheap pool, juke machine, and holds regular gigs in its top room for unsigned bands
I love the Sola Bar, it's fab inside, and really nice crowd on a friday and saturday, great cocktails. And Cubanas and Trippets of course - great atmosphere
Many of the real ale pubs in the Upper Don Valley fall into the independant bar category:
Riverside Cafe Bar (Mowbray Street)
Fat Cat (Alma Street)
Kelham Island Tavern (Russell Street)
Cask & Cutler (Henry Street)
Hillsborough Hotel (Langsett Road)
Gardeners Rest (Neepsend Lane)
And in the City Centre
Rutland Arms (Brown Street)
Bath Hotel (Victoria Street)
Boardwalk (Snig Hill)
Devonshire Cat (Wellington Street)
Muse (West Street)
Red Deer (Pitt Street)
Wig & Pen (Campo Lane)
Three Tuns (Silver Street Head)
Washington (Fitzwilliam Street)
Pete1024 06-02-2005, 23:54 cubanas is awesome
Pete1024 06-02-2005, 23:55 dev cat is a chain, also includes fat cat,
also muse I think is a chain
I think that the Devonshire Cat and the Fat Cat can be included. They each make a valuable contribution to the city, the owner also has interests (or used to) in Champs.
Muse is part of Dogma Bars who are based in Nottingham. Again i would also include them as the group size is about 5.
Classic Rock 07-02-2005, 10:23 Then there's the Classic Rock Bar, of course! Fancy forgetting that! :D
Dave Wickett of Fat Cat and Champs fame sold his share in the Devonshire Cat, so it isn't part of a chain anymore. Not that I really counted Mr Wickett's empire as a chain as it only has a few pubs in it, and each one is unique.
I would have mentioned the Classic Rock Bar, but alas, it's days are numbered. Hopefully CRB MKII will get on the list when it comes to fruition though.

That's not very nice, we haven't closed YET! There are still two weeks to go, we are still trading, bands are still playing and people are still visiting us. Fancy writing us off like that!!
Charlie369 08-02-2005, 09:25 Both the Forum & the Halcyon on Division Street are oindependently owned and operated. An increasingly rare thing nowadays!

SORRY!
The thread started off as looking for information for a guide that is to be published, so by the time the guide comes out the pub will be shut.
But yes, the Classic Rock Bar is CURRENTLY an excellent independent pub - get yourselves down there before it's too late!
