View Full Version : New Jazz club opening soon
Going to be a new PROPER Jazz club on Arundel St in the old Punters bar. It's not really my taste, but it sounds good. A friend is doing it, and he's just spent a year playing at Ronnie Scotts. Expect to see Paul Weller and Courtney Pine live.
sounds great whats it called?
keep music live!!
To be honest - I have absolutely no idea at all. Knowing Simon, he will put his all into it, and I'm sure that it will be good.
Sandra Spice 22-09-2003, 18:47 Tony - Can U pass my name & email on - would be dead interested in bringing a group of people along - we like to be amongst the first & I have to preadvertise it so I don't want to wait till it's open to find out about it.
Thanx
Sandra

Agent Dan 24-09-2003, 09:04 At Last!! Sounds great! When's it opening??
This sounds very promising Tony. What sort of artists is your friend hoping to attract?
Personally I'd like to see music from all around the world catered for, people like Dino Saluzzi or Knut Reiersrud, along side more traditional jazz from people like Guy Barker.
Agent Dan 24-09-2003, 11:01 How about Gilad Aztmon? - he plays two saxophones at once!!!

Interesting you say that, although I've not heard that name before, I've just found out that I've seen him play live, with Ian Dury and the Blockheads at Finsbury Park, about 12 years ago I think. Just like you said, he played the sax bit on "Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick" on two saxes at once!
Agent Dan 24-09-2003, 11:47 Great, isn't it! I've seen him several times in a pub in Essex which has a jazz night - my parents are bordering on being his groupies!! Didn't know he played with Ian Dury tho' - I'll have to check my album sleeve out to see who played on the original!!
I prefer "classical" Jazz myself.. a tune and a croon! I think its going to be more what I would call Random Jazz. mmmm nice!
It should be good though. The guy that is doing it has spent the last year playing at Ronnie Scotts, and he has a reputation for putting his all into a project.

Fantomas 09-12-2003, 19:41 Any idea what it's called or if they have a website to check listings?
Sounds ideal though. :)
I'm only 18 and love Jazz! Sounds good to me, I'll keep my eyes peeled.
Fantomas 11-12-2003, 10:27 Did a quick Google and did indeed find a website:
OneEleven Club (http://www.oneelevenclub.co.uk/content.php). Not much info yet but should be one to watch.
MsMuffin 12-12-2003, 17:24 Tony - didn't realise the club was opening so soon! Good on im.
Shame we'll have to wait for live music. See you!
Sandra Spice 14-12-2003, 13:28 I popped in last night - it's looking pretty swish in there. Looks like a great new venue for Sheffield.
Dr Feelgood 21-12-2003, 00:10 Fantastic news for Sheffield. As a jazz lover I can't wait for it to open. It's another positive thing to lift the city's image.

Live music is hoped to begin in January. I will post here when I know more. In the meantime one eleven is open evenings except Sunday and Monday for food and drink. They have great chef brought in especially, wines from Harvey Nick's merchant and an experienced cocktail bar tender!
beermaster 07-01-2004, 16:33 I've not been to this yet is it worth a look? Any more people been with reviews of the place?
I can't wait for this to get goin! does anyone know of a blues bar in Sheffield?
I notice that it is another one of these places that does not open in the afternoon or early evening.
There is nowhere in Sheffield where you can get a drink and listen to jazz in the afternoon.

They used to do that at the Leadmill on a Sunday lunchtime but that was <<mumble>> years ago and I don't know if they still do it. Someone here might though.

Herbaliser 09-01-2004, 18:52 I tried to pop in at oneeleven on Wednesday but it was shut. :( On me birfdee too. Ah well. One day, one day...
Greenback 13-01-2004, 17:07 First night of live music tonight - anyone (else) going? :D
MsMuffin 27-01-2004, 14:41 Just spotted a post about not being able to see jazz in the afternoon - we play at Trippet's Wine Bar on Trippet lane from 12.30 - 3pm on the last Friday of the month.
Check my page www.wendykirkland.com for more details and also the postings place for events in this forum.
Cheers

Moneypenny 27-01-2004, 20:07 Has anyone checked this club out yet? Love jazz and just wondered:
what you think
how much is was to get in
what time do gigs start/finish
would love to know.
Greenback 28-01-2004, 13:53 Not a jazz buff by any means but I enjoyed the opening night - the place is quite tight space-wise but there's a nice atmosphere/mix of people.
Think it's usually a tenner to get (though due to the size, it has been sold out, so ring up and check first).
It opens at 7 and when I went the band came on at just after 9.
They have some top names, some of which play at Ronnie Scott's and then travel up to Sheffield (there's a plush flat above the venue).
All in all, definitely worth a visit.
steelblade 28-01-2004, 16:49 Please name me something that it's next to, I can't think where it is.

you have to pay to get in....????????
Yes..... and ?
If you don't like it , don't go. It''s not a charity.
Live acts cost money, and the quality far exceeds anything else in this town that is otherwise is almost devoid of culture.
dizzy1234 07-02-2004, 11:56 If you're looking for an excuse to check out the one-eleven club then come check out my band. We're playing there in a few weeks time on Tuesday the 2nd of March.
By all accounts it's a really nice venue (not that I've had a chance to go there yet). Their website is here (http://www.oneelevenclub.co.uk) (watch out, it has lots of java, which crashes some peoples' browser) and this is my jazz band's website (http://www.blackcoffeemusic.co.uk). There's a map and stuff on my band's website if you don't know where it is.
Cheers
Nick
MsMuffin 10-02-2004, 17:42 We went to the 111 club opening night when Omar Puente was playing - very, very groovy.
The food was fantastic and the ambience (!) great. The owner, Simon, is a great chap and I'll definitely be going down there again very soon.
Hoping to catch a few of the top level acts there in the next few weeks too.
Leviathan 10-02-2004, 18:26 Does the one eleven club have a dress code do you know? I wouldn't mind going down this Friday with my girlfriend, possibly for a "Valentines day" meal and to listen to some good music but we're not the worlds biggest fans of getting REALLY dressed up.
How busy does it tend to get? I'm just wondering whether I might need to book a table in advance for Friday.....?
It's small and personal and busy busy busy... get on the phone and book quick!
dizzy1234 27-02-2004, 16:16 I just saw a post asking where the One Eleven Club is near. Amusingly, it's near a furniture shop called Courtyard Pine.
Ho ho ho.
Jazz nerd.
MsMuffin 24-03-2004, 00:27 Dizzy, you wag. Any more gigs booked for your band?
MsMuffin 24-03-2004, 00:29 Oh and by the way, there's a new venue opening which will also have live jazz, called Ruskins Wine Bar, in that nice new building on the corner across from the Crucible.
Incidentally, anyone going to see Iain Ballamy at the Crucible Studio this Saturday? I am.
Fantomas 24-03-2004, 10:10 I'm away this weekend so can't make it :(
Saw him at Leeds Wardrobe last year with Food, very very good.
MsMuffin 30-03-2004, 22:21 And I missed it because I was (and still am) ill with a virus. Doh!
Still, at least you had the pleasure...got any recommendations recording-wise? Send me a PM if you like.
