View Full Version : Women drivers attempting to reverse

What the heck is wrong with women drivers at this time of year?
I went to Matalan off parkway yesterday & had 3 near misses with women drivers reversing out of parking spots.
Not one of them were looking out of their rear view mirrors or rear window.
One was about a foot from my door before she actually realised I was there.
They need to learn to reverse into the spot, there's less chance of them hitting someone.
By the way I am a woman driver (who knows how to reverse into a parking space) hence the 15yrs + protected no claims insurance

Dear oh dear...

(1) It's a makeup mirror, not a rearview mirror

(2) The parking sensors would have alerted them before they hit you

(3) Many women 'lose it' when Christmas shopping and reversing isn't their main concern

Are but are you one of those drivers that see someone reversing but still drives past instead of waiting patiently until they have finished and then moans when reversing person nearly hits you.

That really bugs me I have had it loads of times have people no patience at all?

Seriously though, the OP has my sympathy as I almost collided with some old bat yesterday in a car park.

Now, usually old people can't see more than 3 feet in front of them. Not this old dear :D

She entered the car park just after me, saw a space in the distance so sped off in an anti-clockwise direction, the wrong way through the car park just to get there before me.

Fortunately, there were two free parking places next to each other and I took the one closest to me. Because if I hadn't, the sweet old lady would have taken my front bumper off :)

No I am not one of those impatient people
If I had been impatient & tried to get past too quick they would have hit me!

Rather than attempting difficult manoeuvres like reversing, why don't women drivers simply approach the parking space from the opposite direction?

It is not women in particular.... I have found many men to be equally lacking in common sense. However, I do get annoyed with people who do not learn to reverse properly. I equally get annoyed with people who seem to have no comprehension of the meaning of the words blind spot and then shout when you don't see them.

Personally I think you are only encountering women doing these things because most men will not go shopping at this time of year. It is therefore women who bear the brunt of the stresses of xmas shopping trips. I think is a contributory factor to bad driving at this time of year.

I didn't mention this in my initial thread but I also turned the corner to drive past the disabled spots & an old man coming up the wrong way in the car park cut across my path (nearly hitting the front end of my car) to get into the disabled space, I had to reverse out of the way for him to get in

Its the multitask theory - women seem to have a 'Jack of All Tasks' when it comes to doing loads of things at once, unfortunatly, they're very rarely master of one :P

More or less exactly the same thing happened to me on tuesday in Waitrose car park BUT IT WAS A MAN DRIVING WHO WAS ATTEMPTING TO REVERSE!!!!

I find both sexes drive incompetently at times, older women are really bad for it, what gets me though is I drive up ''Highcliffe Road'' on the way home from work how anyone cannot grasp the 'GIVE WAY TO UPHILL DRIVERS' concept: this really wastes so much time as uphill an downhill queues then form!! So if you are one of those that drive down it after work: please remember to give way to us struggling to get uphill!!!

Nah, no man would drive that badly - must have been a short-haired, flat-chested woman...er...dressed as a man.

I agree all the stresses fall on women at xmas men just carry on as normal and expect Xmas to magicly sort itself out:hihi:

Maybe if you happen to always be in the vacinity of such bad exeriences, you might want to consider what effects your having on these poor unfortunate people to make them behave so badly?

Or is it just coincidence

Driving at this time of year seems to be much like anything else where people congregate - totally moronic and selfish to the extreme in some cases.

Deep Breathes people...deep breathes.

Found this to be quite interesting.....

Research published today indicates that 80% of UK drivers break motorway speed limits when driving their car, with men worst culprits than women.
The research, which was conducted among 4,000 UK motorists on behalf of online car insurance provider yesinsurance.co.uk, shows that 90% of men admit to exceeding the 70mph speed limit, with nearly two-thirds (63%) saying they have driven over 100 miles per hour.

Female drivers are safer when compared with men, but still display a level of disregard for safety and the law. Just over three quarters (77%) of women admit to breaking the speed limit, whilst a third (36%) say they have driven over 100 miles per hour.

Ironically, whilst men are far more likely to speed than women, the research indicates that a third of men (31%) think they are better drivers than women.

However, road accident statistics show the opposite. There are 30% more male drivers than female, but they are involved in almost twice as many car accidents as women. Road accident statistics - which are due to be published next month by the Office for National Statistics - show that in 2006 almost 162,000 male car drivers were involved in car accidents in which someone was injured, compared with just over 90,000 female drivers.

So you must be 'one of these drivers' who reverses out of spaces expecting people to stop for you rather than giving way and waiting till the road is clear before proceeding... no wonder you've nearly hit people loads of times!

So would they be excused had I not been in my car but were walking with my children?
I'm talking about them NOT looking when they are reversing, pedestrians also have to walk behind parked cars & a small child holding an adults hand can't always be seen

No I mean I have started reversing and then some pillock speeds out of nowhere sees me reversing but carries on regardless:rant:

Perhaps I am just more generous than most and if someone has started reversing when I drive into a car park I wait until they have finished I thought this was common courtesy.

You are obviously one of the impatient pillocks I have come accross:hihi:

I'm a relatively new driver and don't intend to lose my license, so I stick well within the limits.

Im amazed every time I go on the motorway, if I'm doing 70mph nearly every single other vehicle overtakes me.

This also goes for Penistone Road, rarely when i'm doing 30 do I get cars behind me, they all over take and zoom off.

Wonder if my speedo is wrong... :suspect:

You don't have to give way to uphill drivers, the right of way is given to the person whose side is not obstruted.

Giving way to uphill drivers is common curtosey though.

And that just says it all! No one 'speeds out of nowhere', if you're not looking properly then you don't see them simple as. :loopy:

So you're generous when in a car park, good for you - but the last thing you should be doing is assuming everybody else is driving the same way you do. ;)

It's in the highway code, give way to drivers driving uphill regardless of which side of the road cars are on. Have a look - lots of helpful tips in there ;)

I don't think many people realise it's a 30 limit down there. Anyway, aren't speed limits more like guidelines? :hihi:

No-one's mentioned the big problem with reversing out of parking spaces - when someone's come along and parked their Chelsea tractor next to you so you really can't see what's coming

when reversing you should be using the rear window and not the the rear view mirror this is to tell you what is happening behind while travelling forward.

It's definitely not just women:) My wife saw 2 men in Tesco's car park last week. Parked in opposite bays and both reversed out at the same time without seeing the other and colliding. There then followed quite a heated exchange over whose fault it was:rolleyes:
