View Full Version : Fear of flying please help rock1980 06-12-2007, 11:52 hello im about to go abroad but im scared of flying not just the normal scared but really scared can any1 help with cures or anything please:D Jason Bourne 06-12-2007, 11:53 Hypnotism? It worked for Mr T :) sophiec1979 06-12-2007, 11:55 my dad uses beta blockers to overcome his anxiety about flying. you will need to speak to your gp though before considering this option. x bladesufc1 06-12-2007, 11:56 do to your doctors and tell them what you telling us, they'll give you something to take care of it:) BasilRathbon 06-12-2007, 11:56 Try to request a seat between two obese people. It may be a squash during the flight but at least you've have something soft to land on if it crashes. NorthernSoul 06-12-2007, 12:00 sit at the back...they never reverse into those mountains DUFFEMS 06-12-2007, 12:02 Sitting next to a big fat Belgian bloke gave me a fear of flying years ago and I've never recovered! Seriously, I'm petrified of flying, not a fear of coming down but, the claustrophobia of being a cigar tube which wasn't helped by being squashed by an obese chap. I'm told that hypnotherapy does work though I haven't taken the plunge (sorry, not a good phrase to use when talking about flying!). Let us know how you go on. Duffem Lindseyw 06-12-2007, 12:05 Take a look at this thread: http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showthread.php?t=277619&highlight=flying BasilRathbon 06-12-2007, 12:06 Take a canister of helium so that, in the event of a crash, you can inhale it and float away before impact. If it doesn't work at least you'll be able to say your last words in a silly high-pitched voice and thus will leave this world with a smile on your face. Hope that helps! steveb2007 06-12-2007, 12:06 Did you know that more people are killed by donkey's annually, than flying?:) BasilRathbon 06-12-2007, 12:07 ..........so check before the flight whether or not the pilot is a donkey. Jason Bourne 06-12-2007, 12:08 Did you know that more people are killed by donkey's annually, than flying?:) Define donkey? A stupid motorist? :) SimpyTimpy 06-12-2007, 12:18 Take an MP3 player on board, or something that can take your mind off things. I'm scared of flying too, but the bit that gets me the most is the take off and landing. You can't really avoid this because you get the G Force feeling in your tummy, but think of it as an adrenaline rush because you've just won the lottery.... lmao Either way, you grunt and bare the take off and landing - and then for the rest of the flight listen to your MP3 player or watch the onflight movies. It wont be a complete solution but it makes it more bareable. steveb2007 06-12-2007, 12:19 ..........so check before the flight whether or not the pilot is a donkey. Good idea!:hihi: BasilRathbon 06-12-2007, 12:20 Take an MP3 player on board, or something that can take your mind off things. I tried that but unfortunately forgot to erase the MP3's I'd copied from this site (http://www.planecrashinfo.com/lastwords.htm). dan_999uk 06-12-2007, 12:23 It's not the flying you need to worry about, it's the crashing or the sudden explosive decompression at 35,000 feet or the plane catching fire or the wing dropping off or the floor just disappearing from under you and falling and falling and falling....... Odds of dying in a plane crash - 1 in 11,000,000 Odds of dying driving to airport - 1 in 5,000 nikita 06-12-2007, 12:26 hello im about to go abroad but im scared of flying not just the normal scared but really scared can any1 help with cures or anything please:D Dont go you will be a total wreck. Send me all details i will go in your place. SimpyTimpy 06-12-2007, 12:39 It's not the flying you need to worry about, it's the crashing or the sudden explosive decompression at 35,000 feet or the plane catching fire or the wing dropping off or the floor just disappearing from under you and falling and falling and falling....... Odds of dying in a plane crash - 1 in 11,000,000 Odds of dying driving to airport - 1 in 5,000 Are you saying that for every 5,000 people who go to the airport, 1 dies? Surely that statistic is a bit high - perhaps crashes? Flightlevel 06-12-2007, 12:53 There's no fast fix. But clearly just to say that Aviation is by far the safest form of transport per passenger mile. Is this your first time flying? How has the fear developed? If it is your first flight you may just have to be strong and realise it is only a phobia and nothing will happen, I am sure the cabin crew would be more than happy to offer support if you let them know upon borading or at the gate. If you ask you could always see the flight deck when on the ground and have a word with the flight crew. Although not cheap, if you want to try and resolve it for good a "fear of flying" course run in conjunction with BA is very well respected: http://www.aviatours.co.uk/ irenewilde 06-12-2007, 13:06 The problem is that when you're *that* frightened, nothing helps at all. People can quote lists of statistics at you and it doesn't make any difference (incidentally, the "donkey" one is not true, just an urban myth). You know the chances of anything going wrong are minute, but that doesn't seem to help when you're thousands of feet in the air in a metal tube! I've flown all over the world and I am absolutely terrified of flying. I mean real fingers-gripping-the-seat-arms-&-not-being-able-to-breathe-properly scared, not "ooh, I'm a little bit nervous" scared. I've tried tranquillisers and alcohol (both at the same time). I don't know what else to do - I think I just need to stop doing it! This is not really any help to you, but you do have my sympathy :-( dan_999uk 06-12-2007, 13:25 Are you saying that for every 5,000 people who go to the airport, 1 dies? Surely that statistic is a bit high - perhaps crashes? No, your chances of dying in a road traffic collision are 1 in 5,000 - subject to the usual caveats about statistics. nick2 06-12-2007, 13:28 I always sit right at the back of the plane. When you see plane crashes on TV the tail bit is usually intact. Thats my reasoning anyway. poppins 06-12-2007, 13:29 Iv'e always been afraid of flying, people keep telling me "when it's your turn to go, you'll go" nothing you can do about it. BUT, I might be on the same plane when it's someone elses time to go and I'll have to go with them  firesmudge 06-12-2007, 15:25 If you can get a seat on the black box then no matter what you will be ok, as this is the only thing that survives a crash. mikeG 06-12-2007, 16:12 When I've survived the takeoff I buy 3/4 miniatures off the nice drinks trolley lady. Down the hatch and in 20 minutes I'm fine. lazyherbert 06-12-2007, 16:15 hello im about to go abroad but im scared of flying not just the normal scared but really scared can any1 help with cures or anything please:D It is not the flying that scares you it is the crashing.:hihi: mr_busdriver 06-12-2007, 16:42 hello im about to go abroad but im scared of flying not just the normal scared but really scared can any1 help with cures or anything please:D The truth is this. NO ONE and I mean NO ONE has ever died while flying. However when the plane crashes barely anyone survives. Does that help? the moral is, don't be afraid of flying jamesogt 06-12-2007, 16:47 I always feel happier when nuns or priests board the flight as they cant be killed by god in a plane crash surely! gritter1960 06-12-2007, 16:47 hello im about to go abroad but im scared of flying not just the normal scared but really scared can any1 help with cures or anything please:D 6 pints and couple of brandys that should do the trick it does for me:cool::cool::cool: boyfriday 06-12-2007, 18:01 Try to request a seat between two obese people. It may be a squash during the flight but at least you've have something soft to land on if it crashes. ..at last, Basil said something vaguely amusing!   yan 06-12-2007, 18:12 My auntie is just as scared as you, she makes herself ill weeks before her hol because she is that scared. She visited her GP an he gave her Valium she takes it a couple of days before her flight and just before she flies and she's fine. x poppins 06-12-2007, 18:18 Do you know that the pilot and co-pilot have to eat different meals off the menue ? welll thats how it was years ago, don't know if it still stands. Stockers 06-12-2007, 18:29 Vallium is the way forward, the doc will give you a few pills. I fly quite a lot and it doesn't get any better, i'm calm when flying with friends or family but when i fly alone i have too much time to think about whats happening. I haven't got a fear of flying as such but the process bores me. Vini 06-12-2007, 19:22 Im not a fan either. I get sweaty palms and feel alert all flight usually, every bump, noise and what not gets me panicky, however, my flight to Chicago (longest i've done) was ok. I'd taken something prior for the first time - Stugeron (over the counter) and I felt absolutely fine. No sweaty palms or anything. Just a boring 8 hours. My return leg is tomorrow, so we'll see if it was the pills or something else. lazyherbert 06-12-2007, 19:48 As I said on the last thread on this topic.I can walk if the bus breaks down & I can swim if the boat breaks down but no one ever taught me how to fly if the plane breaks down.:hihi::hihi: Stockers 06-12-2007, 20:21 Rescue remedy is a good herbal remedy as well, you can get it from most chemists. Get a few drops of that down you about an hour before you set off to the airport and about an hour before you're due to fly. Allen 06-12-2007, 23:41 Iv'e always been afraid of flying, people keep telling me "when it's your turn to go, you'll go" nothing you can do about it. BUT, I might be on the same plane when it's someone elses time to go and I'll have to go with them  PMSL at Poppins.....I can't stop it's so funny. First time I flew I was scared. It was the thought of it. OMG etc. Now, I love it. Get a window a seat and enjoy the view. Take off and landing is brilliant, honest. The sensation reminds me of them fairground rides where we sat in a rocket shaped seat and controlled the up and down movement with a joystick as it went round and round. Only difference is it goes higher and stays in a straight line.....Hopefully! davidathomas 07-12-2007, 00:22 I am scared of flying and I am a commercial pilot! I just do it for the women on board, dont look down! raganoonande 07-12-2007, 14:12 Rescue remedy is a good herbal remedy as well, you can get it from most chemists. Get a few drops of that down you about an hour before you set off to the airport and about an hour before you're due to fly. Can you take that to the airport with you though? I keep wondering about this. I get nervous flying and I always have Bach Rescue Remedy with me anyway, but I thought with you not being able to take liquids on the flight, you wouldn't be able to have any with you. Can you have this on the flight? Stockers 07-12-2007, 14:16 Can you take that to the airport with you though? I keep wondering about this. Can you have this on the flight? You can take liquids onboard now as long as its under 100ml (or should i say in a container 100ml or smaller). raganoonande 07-12-2007, 14:23 You can take liquids onboard now as long as its under 100ml (or should i say in a container 100ml or smaller). Oh good, thanks for that. At least I know now. irenewilde 19-12-2007, 22:33 As I said on the last thread on this topic.I can walk if the bus breaks down & I can swim if the boat breaks down but no one ever taught me how to fly if the plane breaks down.:hihi::hihi: My thoughts exactly!!!! pitsmoorlad 20-12-2007, 08:25 I have every sympathy, with people who are scared of flying, and I know that logical arguements and statistics make no difference at all. I was petrified of flying, even though I'd never flown, and would break out into a sweat just thinking about it. The decision I made was to face it head on and see if my fears were justified. We went to France and a close friend talked me through everything up to and including take off and landing. Now I don't have any real worries about it and have flown all over. My daughter will fly but has been a bag of nerves for weeks leading up to the flight and scared stiff while on the plane. She's recently been on a "nervous flyers" day at Manchester airport and it helped her a lot. There's talks with a psychologist, aeronautics expert, a pilot, and then a short flight over the Isle of Man. She's said that she'll never be delighted to get on a plane, but she'll not be as scared. My wife used to have Beta-Blockers from the doc. |
