If you were given £50,000 to start a business (nothing else) what sort of business would you start?

I'd set up a business selling non-aggressive Marigolds, incorporating a remedial training school for re-training Marigolds that have become savage :hihi:

A chippy. Cash business, good scope for the 'wastage' of food and a possibility of skimming huuuuuuuuge amounts from the tax man :hihi:

Yes, shame that, always an excellent source of advice on anything laundry-related!

Not with everyone having automatic washers it wouldnt, but Cinders did a good trade in home laundry didnt he ?

a record shop...............i actually did a 10 week make it in business course to do it, but the guy talked with collegues and said a record shop in whitby wouldnt work as its the wrong type of people there....there has been a couple snce but they havent lasted all that long.
then along came babies etc and it got put on hold.

even applied for a brand new hmv store that was opening in stockton but they dint want me :( prolly wanted a kid to be paid peanuts rather than somebody who knows their music, games and films :P

well with £50,000 you could commute to Scarborough and open there, what about Bridlington and Filey are they big enough?

I once went for an interview at a HMV shop too.Did you have to answer loads of music questions on a sheet?I did, got a huge percentage right, but I also think they wanted somebody who knew nothing, or who had such bland musical tastes that they wouldn't be an evil influence on their customers!!!

And...Knowing what I know now, I'd open an art gallery selling a variety of weird and wonderful items, and at night it would be a chill out bar.

Interesting that most people are choosing businesses that sell products or goods.
I formed my own limited company a few months ago now, I sell my abilities as a software developer. 50k would provide a nice company car and a xmas bonus though :D

If someone really had a viable business idea wouldn't they be able to borrow the 50k to start it, rather than have to be given it as a gift (ie if you would only start a business if you were gifted the 50k then must not have much confidence in it being viable). Hope that makes sense.

A gift is better than a loan ... but I get your point Code13. Starting up is probably the easy bit (???) The success comes from attracting and retaining loyal customers - or "brand addicts" For example ... How do you create the demand for handbags costing on average £850 ??????????

What am I talking about?

"Selfridges, the department store chain, reports that the average price tag on designer handbags at its shops has risen by 55% to about £850 since 2005"

AND

" .... the Louis Vuitton Tribute Patchwork bag is priced at £23,484!"
Designer Handbags at Extreme Prices (http://www.psfk.com/2007/02/designer_handba.html)

HANDBAGS retailing at TWENTY THREE GRAND!!! How many of those could you buy in with £50k startup money? And is there any local demand?????

I have a vintage Chanel handbag bought in London from a French lady, a Gucci, a Christian Dior, Guess, Mango small Prada, but have to say I have about 50 more which are just as attractive and some which I prefer, e.g. a beautiful green/gold/red one bought again from France - it can be a question of taste too

... 50+ handbags cressida? ... i would never have guessed you were a bag lady :heyhey: ever heard of bags anonymous (http://www.baganonymous.com/bagaddict.php) ... no it's nothing to do with confessing an addiction and trying to give it up ... ... it's hanbag rental! ... now who would have thought that was a viable business? wonder if it took more than £50k to start up?

'tis true spinac, and I blame it all on Jennifer Swann who came to school, on her birthday with a vanity case full of sweets, then brought me a handbag at my birthday party

id want a little coffee shop type place but not those over priced over styled intimidating places you see about these days, it would be a cosy corner shop somewhere with big windows, several little tables and maybe a couple of comfy chairs where you would be able to get a nice freshly made coffee or other hot and cold beverages, homemade cakes and pastries, sandwiches made to order non of them pre packed rubbish and maybe a nice selection of panninis and possibly some nice salads all made with fresh local ingredients and made to order at reasonable prices. and maybe a few little cast iron tables outside for when its sunny/warm.:)
