AFAIK ... it's unlikely (unless it's a very clever DVD player).

You need to convert the format to VCD (video CD).

Depends on the format used and the ability of your DVD player to cope with it. There are several guides on the net that explain it quite well, a quick read round www.cdfreaks.com may be a good place to start.

yeah you can get dvd players that play .avi's and .mpegs (like mine :D) but most dont support the formats.

I prefer to do it the long way (tmpegenc + authoring software) but the shortest and easiest way I've found to convert a DivX/Xvid to DVD is to use the snappily titled 'DivXtoDVD' software freely downloadable from http://www.vso-software.fr/

You feed it a DivX/Xvid, and it spits out a DVD file structure (VOBs and IFOs).

Takes about an hour for a 1 to 2 hour film.

As stated depends on your player - lots support DivX and other file types now...
