View Full Version : What are your favourite 5 moments in football
Titanic99 04-12-2007, 18:44 Anyone who has become emotionally attached to a football team must have experienced those wonderful moments that make you feel glad to be alive. These could be:
Beating your hated rivals
Coming from behind to win
Atmosphere at the game
Getting promoted
Someone else getting relegated
Here is your opportunity to share those high moments with everyone, can I ask for your favourite 5 moments of any description relating to football. For starters, here’s mine:
Number 5- This is a bit of an odd one and I wonder if anyone can remember it, it relates to a game against Derby County when Wednesday fans were supposed to be banned but a couple of thousand managed to get tickets direct from Derby and got in, the atmosphere was wonderful with everyone singing “If you’re not here, clap your hands”. Can anyone recall the other games we were banned from: Grimsby and Swansea were two but I can’t remember the other one?
Number 4- This comes from 1982 when my wee country Northern Ireland beat Spain 1-0 to qualify for the next stage of the World Cup.
Number 3- This comes from the day United were relegated to Division 4, it feels quite immature now but at the time, it felt great
Number 2- This comes from Chris Waddles goal against United at Wembley, the ecstasy when that went in probably beat that at the final whistle
Number 1- When the final whistle went at Wembley and we’d beat Manchester United in the league cup final, the celebrations were unbelievable
There are others that have just missed out:
Wednesday winning at Blackburn in Division 3
The play-off final
Northern Ireland beating England
Followers of all clubs and countries share your best 5 moments with us all!

1: Beating Blades in Semi Final at Wembley (Was better than the best sex EVER)
2: Winning Rumbelows v Man Utd
3: Boxing Day Massacre
4: Wednesday Beating Blackburn Away to win promotion to old Div 1
5: Germany 1v5 England
Would love to have put England beating Holland 4-1 in 96 but u only get 5 choices
Not sure about the order here, but:
- The Wembley semi-final; the best atmosphere ever seen at Wembley for a football match. 75,000 partisan fans, and no neutrals.
So, we lost - it was still a fantastic day out, for both teams.
- United 5, Brighton 4; a 3-0 lead in twenty minutes, threw it all away and went 4-3 down, missed a complete sitter with less than five minutes to go, then got a penalty and nicked the winner right at the death.
- 2005 Champions' League final; 3-0 down and dead in the water, Liverpool somehow pulled off the greatest fightback in European club football.
- 1999 Champions' League final; this comeback wasn't far behind it. :D
- 1984 European Cup final; the first (and I believe only) time a team was playing at home for the Final, and Liverpool still turned them over.
happyhippy 05-12-2007, 03:06 As an ROI man, I still have to say that I cheered Armstrong's goal in '82 like a madman aged 8, but (for me) it was a shame you were in white shirts that day. Hearing the word "Ireland" in a World Cup was amazing! But it would have been better if you were in green!
Anyway, my five in ascending order .......
5) Robbie Keane, Ireland v Germany, World Cup, June 5, 2002
I was in the middle of a terrible split from my ex, and I was trying to make things ok, and for some odd reason she came with me to the Dog & Partridge to watch the match. I was ****** and she hates football. Neither of us were in the best of moods, and Ireland were losing deep, deep into injury time when Keane-o scored and sent the pub into ecstacy.
I saw her smile for me, and I smiled for her, and for a moment things were well. Then Spain beat us on penalties, we went out, she continued to hate me, and normal service had been resumed.
But for a few precious moments ...... just a few ...... we remembered why once upon a time we loved each other.
Only Brazil scored in normal time against Germany that tournament bar Ireland. I'll bet she doesn't care about that. The bitch.
4) Brian Deane v Day Before Thursday, Bramall Lane, Nov 17th 1991
The first league derby since, er, that one near a winter pagan festival in 1979, apart from a draw at the Lane later that year. That lot were riding high, and we were seriously struggling (again), and Tricky Trevor's side were expected to win. Dane Whitehouse and the rest of the Blades had different ideas, and after his opener, the legend who is Brian Deane put one through Chris Woods' legs.
Which made us laugh.
3) Phil Jagielka v Leeds, Bramall Lane, 6th November 2002
I've been taking my eldest to matches since she was tiny. My other two are to be subjected to similar pain, but occassionally you get moments of brilliance.
Even at the Lane.
Eldest brat was only 9 at the time, and at 1-0 down, I was just about to say in injury time to her that losing to a top flight side (as was :hihi::hihi::hihi:) wasn't such a bad thing, when Jags let fly from 35 odd yards.
Now I know it's a well worn phrase, but as soon as I saw it leave his boot,I knew it was a goal. It utterly broke Weeds and United went on to win in injury time with a bundled goal from Ndlovu.
Although Nuddy's goal was the winner, Jags effort was truly spectacular.
2) Ray Houghton - Ireland 1 England 0, Stuttgart June 12 1988
His spetacular goal against Italy in 1994 had to be close, but Ray's winner against England, of all countries was too satisfying for words. Nearly 14 years old, but still buying beer :hihi: I went out in South East London where I lived, in Irish colours.
I also knew where the Irish club was :hihi:
Our first ever match in a proper competition, and God(TM) was on our side, as we humped England. I think Lineker hit the post three times that day, and it was like the Alamo that day. But it was our first match, and we still love the fact it was against England, and we won.
1) Tony Agana, Leicester City 2 Sheffield United 5, May 5 1990
Simply, what a day!
Agent Gypo 05-12-2007, 10:17 I've got 7 games I'll always remember.
Coming from a goal behind at Bramall Lane to beat Wednesday 3-1, in a game where we really should have scored another 2 or 3.
Watching David Healy score 2 on his Preston debut at Bramall Lane, to see us claw back and win 3-2.
Playoff semi-final, Blades v Forest. I loved watching Peschisolido entertain the crowd at half time, as a goalkeeper.
England 5 - 1 Germany
Chelsea 3 - 1 Barcelona. Back when Flo was at Chelsea, Figo and Rivaldo were at Barca. At 3-0, the Barca players looked totally shellshocked. Sadly they won the next game at the Nou Camp to send Chelsea out.
UEFA Cup final, Liverpool 5 - 4 Alaves.
Champions League final, Liverpool 3 - 3 AC Milan.
Guderian 05-12-2007, 14:55 No disrepect, but I have to smile at the Rumbelows final being some fans highlight!
I was on the losing side that day, and it took me all of a day to get over it. I just wish though I had been receiving Yorkshire TV at the time, as I could have watched the monster trucks!
The rest of us had to watch Wednesday parading the cup round.
My highlights:
1) Teddy Sheringham scoring vs Bayern in Nou Camp in 99 Euro Cup final. Had driven down there with two pals in a battered Rover. Had only passed my test the month before.
2) Ole Solkjaer in above game. Dont ask me why, but I view the equaliser as better. It was such relief. As soon as we scored it I thought we would beat them in extra time, as they looked so deflated. THe winner was nice, but I was mentally spent after the Teddy goal.
3) Ryan Giggs vs Arsenal at Villa Park in 99 FA Cup semi replay. What a goal. Was sat behind Seamans goal. The joy was heightened by fact i went to the game with a good friend who happens to be an Arsenal fan, and he had been winding me up.
4) Bryan Robson vs Liverpool in FA Cup Semi Replay at Maine Road in 85. Robbo in his pomp.
5) Ian Henry scoring for Oldham vs Villa, May 93. The defeat for Villa handed us the Championship for first time since 67. It was my first year at Uni, so went straight out afterwards on the lash.
If I were allowed a 6th, it would be seeing Norman Whiteside on the log flume at Alton Towers in 1988.
T'Owls 5 Man Utd 4 - September 1968 - shortly after Man U had won the European Cup.
Donny Rovers 4 Oxford United 2 - Sept 1962 - first game I ever went to - Oxford had a left half name of Atkinson who went on to bigger things.
Leeds 1 - T'Owls 3 FA Cup replay 1969 - electric atmosphere and Peter Eustace had the game of his life - kept nutmegging Bremner for a laugh.
Sam Ellis taking a free kick from the edge of his own penalty area and narrowly missing the clock on the North Stand.
Bremner and Trevor Hockey kicking lumps out of each other at the Lane circa 1975 - kept up a non stop scrap for 90 minutes, mainly without the ball. Classic.
ReginaldD 06-12-2007, 14:36 1. Brentford away Playoff Semi Final. I know it sounds stupid to put this above the final. But the atmosphere there having won the first leg was great. What I liked about the Brentford games was becaus ethe away end was small it was only the 'real' Wednesday fans who'd been following them all over who got tickets for the game. Eveyone there was really passionate and it felt like I was with my people. Whereas Cardiff just didn't have the same atmosphere as about 20,000 there didn't attended Hillsborough on a regular basis.
2. Cardiff promotion. I went to almost all the games that year and it felt like I'd invested so much support into them.
3. Man Utd V Fenerbache
I only ever normally go to Wednesday games. It was Wayne Rooney debut, he got a hat trick and I sat there with my mouth open amazed at his and teh rest of the team's skill. The running off the ball, little things like that which you don't see on tv, it wa sjust nothing like I've ever seen live before.
4. Euro 96
No particular game the whole tournament really, this my first proper memory of watching football. I was nine at the time and would have been three during Italia 90 so it was the first tournament for my generation. I used to play football all the time anyway, I remember sat watching the build up to the Scotland game and Gazza's goal. Then the tears after Southgate sent his penalty into Row Z.
5. Still think, will edit
1) League Cup 5th Round Replay 1985 Sheffield Wednesday 4 Chelsea 4 (after extra time): :o
2) steel city derby Semi Final at Wembley 93:D
3) rumbelows cup winners wembley..91 BIG RON!:D
4) cardiff... 40,000...
5) (FA Cup Final Replay)93... we may have lost but i was proud to have followed my team to wembley that season... although i cried like a baby.... it still hurts to this day...
its only a game my arse!!
briggy1967 06-12-2007, 20:52 Was at the game in 85 madowl, remember Mel Sterland coming over to us at half time laughing his head off and punching the air,me and mi dad left when they went 4-3 up and missed Sterlands penalty. Were both gutted when we heard the cheers.

mickdalewood 08-12-2007, 09:59 1. Beating Man Utd at wembley 1991. went for the weekend brill
2. The Owls 5 West Ham 0 the day Waddle ran rings around their defence
3. The steel city FA cup semi final at wembley a great day out for all supporters but for some the result spoilt it
4. Beating Man Utd 5-4 at hillsborough
5. Beating Arsenal 1-0 at hillsborough the goal scored by Briscoe and the first premier goal Mallinger had conceded and of course the famous di-canio incedent when Winterburn ran 30 yards to get involved the ran away when di-canio squared up:hihi:
- Wiltord's goal at the very last mn in the Euro 2000 final, and France subsequent victory against Italy
- France winning the 1998 World Cup
- Man Utd scoring 2 goals in stoppage time against Bayern Munich and winning the C1
- Laurent Blanc scoring the first golden goal in the history of the World Cup against Paraguay

CHAIRBOY 10-12-2007, 19:17 A more contemporaneous memory - not seen above -which meant something to me - was Arsenal going unbeaten in the Premiership, throughout the season, at Highbury. Obviously, it won't be done again at Highbury but I think it's an achievement which I won't witness in my remaining lifetime.
I am also proud of the fact that I saw both Sheffield Wednesday (1962) - their last time, and Sheffield United (1971) - win league matches at Highbury. You'd have to be a fair age to match that. The Scullion goal took the Blades to the head of the top tier (the former Division 1), though my pleasures at S2 came from the cricket ground. I saw Arsenal take some revenge just after with that 5-0 win at Bramall Lane when the late Alan Ball parked his bum on the ball in the centre of the field.

Wasn't it Tony Currie who took 'proper' revenge by doing the same? I thought Alan Ball had done it first for Arsenal, then TC took revenge by sitting on the ball v Arsenal a couple of years later, after we were 4-0 up inside the first half hour?

I'm sure you're right but I was most likely watching Newcastle then.
I think the Ball incident was 1972? Definitely not a Blade, though I have watched many, many matches at Bramall Lane before blanket TV coverage came into being - either for something to do, or before local radio, in the 50's, 60's, to get the 15 min scoreboard. Rotherham, Chesterfield, Barnsley or reserve games, it was a passion to see a game.
CHAIRBOY 11-12-2007, 06:02 Cues me in nicely to a memorable match at Bramall Lane! 1960 6th Round F.A. Cup Sheffield Utd 0 v Sheffield Wed. 2 - thanks to Derek Wilkinson. Yes, I went to the Boxing Day massacre but the above match was of much greater importance - the two teams infinitely better - It was a tense affair and Wednesday progressed to the semi-final (that resulted in tears for me) - as the Owls lost to Blackburn. As has been documented in the 'nostalgia' section, Bramall Lane was a three-sided ground in 1960 and a temporary stand was built on my beloved cricket field, so it was a packed house with a nervous atmosphere.
Before Match of the Day, the Saturday evening football offering was called, "Sports Special" (Wolstenholme, Alan Weekes and Wally Barnes, the mikesmiths) and I appeared on 8 April 1960 Sheffield Wednesday v Leicester 2-2. Wednesday were demolishing the old North Stand - prior to the buiilding of the 'cantilever' type ahead of the '66 World Cup. I had been recruited as a ball boy from outside the players' entrance at a reserve game and not only the excitement, but a half-a-crown fee!
My task was to prevent the ball going down the many holes that had been pile-driven and with the TV cameras operating from the South Stand, the ball boys and linesman hogged the limelight. Frank McLintock scored both the Leicester goals, one of which was a penalty at the Leppings Lane end.
Another match with a strange memory and moral - FA X1 v The Army at Hillsborough, a night game in the early 60's - featuring Albert Quixall (Royal Signals). I watched the game on the Leppings Lane terracing when Bobby Moore peppered in a shot from outside the box. Stupidly, I turned my back on the ball and it struck me in the upper back with a resounding whack! The remedy of 'touching one's toes' to counter being winded had a familiar ring!
I learned from this error and put it to good use at an England training session in 1964.
England came to train for two days at the Goodwin Centre of the University, They stayed at The Rutland at Broomhill and my parents deemed this may be beneficial to my education!
Some players were changed and out on the field. Jimmy Armfield was manning the goal when Wolves' hotshot Mike Bailey, crashed a shot which soared just over the bar. I kept my eyes on the ball this time, reached above my head and the ball stuck in my hands, to be met with "Good stop lad" from Jim. A case of learning from one's mistakes?
CHAIRBOY 11-12-2007, 06:44 Was at the game in 85 madowl, remember Mel Sterland coming over to us at half time laughing his head off and punching the air,me and mi dad left when they went 4-3 up and missed Sterlands penalty. Were both gutted when we heard the cheers.
Always remember the chelsea sub coming on at half time and scoring with his first touch....THE GIT
The Chelsea sub was called Paul Canoville and he was a permanent thorn in Wednesday's side - I think because of his pace - the Owls' just didn't know how to handle him.
30 Jan '85 and you weren't the only one who missed extra-time, so did my dad and I who had opted to beat the traffic, or moreover given up on Wednesday's surrendered one-time 3-0 lead.
4-4 remained after the extra half-an-hour and the club chairmen tossed for venue for the third game (it was a 5th Round League Cup replay). Bert McGee lost the spin, the game went to The Bridge and the Owls went out 2-1. Another opportunity spurned and the Chelsea 'bogey' continued.
Canoville is a cousin of current player Lee Canoville.
