Well, its as the title says really.

If you wanted to go about making up your own lace stole etc, how would you go about it? Is it hard?

I have many ideas but little brain power :hihi: and numbers scare me!

I'd decide what shape I wanted, rectangular, triangular, square, circle or semi circle. Have a look at lace you like for ideas. There's different things to think about depending on what shape you want, if you're making a rectangle and you have a directional pattern then at some point you're going to need to reverse the direction of the pattern so that your trees aren't upside down at one end (knit it in two pieces and graft it together) If you're making a triangle that starts at the centre neck then you maybe want to start off with a small pattern where there's only a few stitches and then change to a bigger repeat as the triangle widens. What you're after is harmony between the various design elements and a smooth transition from one pattern to another. You can add the edging at the end or knit it as part of the piece.

It isn't actually hard to fit the patterns in the stitches, what I find hard is getting the balance between one pattern and the other (positive/negative space or basically getting it just holey enough) and finding an edging that looks right with the lot. Any lace book will have a section on designing, you could start with seeing what you can order from the library.
