Oooh, congratulations on the new arrival. What breed/sex is it?

My sams are insured with KC/M&S at the moment but when you look, just make sure your policy covers everything you want it to

I was advised to use pet plan but read all the small print and found Argos offer the same policy for half price , with the same underwriters as pet plan!!!!

That's interesting Teeny...

Well I started with kennel club, but they upped the premiums after the first year by a frightening tenner a month (bearing in mind I'd not even claimed), so I switched to Petplan because I know they are pretty good at paying out if needs be. OK, premiums jumped up about six pounds per month by the second year with petplan (even though again I hadnt claimed) then upped again, then again...still never claimed and now my dobe is 6 years old it costs me £31 per month, so work that one out...

everyone seems to rave about M&S so I switched my pedigree cats from petplan to M&S and it worked out about £6 per month cheaper per cat and no excess - BUT that was the first year. In year 2, they introduced a £40 excess per cat and upped the premiums by a few quid each per month. Tried same again this year and they now eant to charge me (for a CAT) £12 per month per cat and a £50 excess, so I'll be telling M&S where to stick it as well. Argos may be worth checking out...

PS I wont switch Petplan for my dobe- I know its an obscene amount to pay out but of all the pets, Ailsa is the one most likely to get into scrapes and I darent risk moving her to somewhere where they wont pay out for a pre-condition at some stage. Good luck finding somewhere and keep us posted- always interested in the deals.

:o

That's as much as my car insurance, which is fully comp for estimated 20k miles a year!

Can a dogs op really cost as much as the damage I could potentially do in my car?!

Fine example of why I hate insurance with a passion...even more one-sided than a casino!

I totally understand why you would want pet insurance. However at the prices you have been talking - given you haven't claimed, you would be better off paying that money into an ISA every month and having the savings account to pay for any op's bills that the insurance would cover. and that way there's no excess, no exclusions etc either.

My mum has an account with her vet instead of insurance, basically she pays in so much every month and if the pets need treatment it's already covered.......no loopholes, no suprises just a simple pay up front policy. I don't know if there are any vets willing to do this in sheffield but it's a fantastic scheme if you can get it.

I just daren't NOT have it- my worry is not so much how much it would cost to deal with her medical needs, but how much it could cost if she caused an accident unintentionally. Not that shes an out of control mutt, I hasten to add.

I wish that there was- it is far more sensible than paying money into an insurance black hole. What a brilliant scheme. Ive just told M&S to shove it for my cats- afte what they wanted to charge me for Alfie and now the other renewals have come in and they are all different prices too...

Molly's with Sainsbury's which is underwritten by AXA (picked on price knowing that it's underwritten by a decent sized company), Arthur's with Churchill (picked because he was too old when I got him to sign him up for many companies) and Tiffy and Baby are with PetPlan (I originally had a bulk discount with PetPlan which made it much more affordable and now Tiffy is too old to move elsewhere).

I'd love to see a 'vet plan' locally too- it seems like a thoroughly good idea. The vet also knows how well you look after your animals in terms of having seen them in good shape with you.
