View Full Version : Greno Woods Walk Sunday 9th December
A shorter walk than normal of no more than 6 miles for next Sunday around Greno Woods and Whalejaw Hill at Grenoside.
This walk has been suggested and will be led by Billysmum, who I'm sure will keep us well entertained all day!
The walk will commence at The Old Harrow at 10.45 where there is parking available in the pub car park.
For people arriving by bus, the no 66 leaves platform c4 of the Interchange at 10.15 and gets to the crossroads where the pub is situated at 10.40. Return buses are 10 past the hour.
On previous walks from the Old Harrow we have arranged for a buffet to be put on for us there for when we get back. It has always been worth the £3.50 a head that we have previously been charged, so if anybody is interested in doing the same this time please let me know. We would need to give the landlord a couple of days notice, and I think there is a minimum of 8 people needed for this, so if you are interested in the food just indicate in the post or PM me - I for one am up for it if anybody else is.
Yep! count us in as well! Sounds like a good walk - I love woods!
Yeah Hemlock it is a good walk. I was up there yesterday and walked through the woods with my daughter and her horse and thoroughly enjoyed the place. It's mainly flat, and good paths too, so it will be suitable for anyone.
Hemlock Jr No 4 would like to join us on this walk, if thats ok. She would also want to be in on the buffet as well (another veggie!).
canada_girl 04-12-2007, 11:07 Oh-Billysmum's first walk as leader! Fantastic! I'll be there and will check with Canada_man (aka cookman74)
cookman74 04-12-2007, 13:19
I'll be there and I should have everybody's order with me so bring some cash and we'll sort it out!

Hey, is this MR Canada Man in disguise? Didn't know you had your own name:hihi:
Give me a buzz when order is ready, I won't be on walk so can pop round and pay my debts:D
LinchpinLulu 04-12-2007, 15:25 I'll be there and would like to eat too :)

Yes- now I can stop referring him to 'Canada Man' and start calling him 'cookman74'!
canada_girl 04-12-2007, 17:06 It's somebody's birthday on the 10th! Can anybody guess who's? Hint: they have a soft spot for the cooling towers of Sheffield.

Now there's an idea for a birthday treat with a difference............let him stand next to the cooling towers as they're blown up! (Great pic, but hate the towers)
I'm going to order the buffet, cos I make it 8 people at least. Can we have a show of hands for veggie food though please. I know CG and Cookman74 aren't vegetarians, and I don't think Lulu is either, but how many of your 3 are veggies Hemlock? And if anybody else wants veggie buffet food, can they put this in their post.
Regarding the walk itself, it goes in a sort of figure of 8, with the first part being the longest bit, possibly 4 miles max. This would make a good drop out point for you Albert, if you don't think you can manage it all. Regarding taking Robbie in the pub, I'm fairly certain I've seen dogs in there before, but I'll confirm whether he's allowed or not when I ring the pub to order the food.
parkwoman 04-12-2007, 19:27 Can you count me and Rob in for this please, Scoobz. Neither of us veggie.
MardyBum66 04-12-2007, 19:48 scoobz - your box is full! :o
;)

If my foot is up to it, I'll do the first bit, So please order my food.
If I don't arrive I'll pay for my order. Please let me know about dogs because this cold weather It would be better for him to stay at home instead of having to wait outside in the cold.
- Thanks.
I won't be walking too far because I must take it steady for the next three months or so (Old Age!!!)
If I need my tendon massaging can I depend on you Scubz?
Put me down for 1 1/2 please! :)
I might be joining you on this one. Not sure yet so don't worry about the food side of it. I will just starve :-( watching you eat if I do come :hihi
Albert T Smith 05-12-2007, 08:12 Put me down for 1 1/2 please! :)
You arn't in the club are you?
I know child benefits gone up but theres limit!!
canada_girl 05-12-2007, 08:14 Sorry, a bit late to let you know about the food. . .we'll bring our own sandwiches.
Scoobz can you empty your pms please :)
Dogs are allowed in the pub, and I've placed a provisional order for 8-10, but will need to let him know the exact number, and what % are veggies by Friday evening. I make it 7 carnivores, 2 veggies, and Hemlock and Alberto to admit their preference yet = 11 in total.
No doubt someone will tell me that my Maths stinks in due course!
Scoobz can you empty your pms please :)
Cheers, crept up on me without me realising!
Albert T Smith 05-12-2007, 15:18 carnivore ( with a cup of tea ).
No booze bert
MardyBum66 05-12-2007, 17:09 ........... .......... :loopy: .......... :suspect:
hi Scoobz, 2 out of 3 Hemlocks are vegetarian (Mr Hemlock is the opposite - he LOVES his meat!)
MardyBum66 05-12-2007, 21:12 carnivore ( with a cup of tea ).
No booze bert
 So, you only go vegetarian if there are no teabags left?! :hihi:
13 ordered then, 4 veggie, 9 non-veggie. If anyone is counting Sherwood1 is coming and not posted + a non-forumer who is a friend of mine.
If anybody wants there name adding later, let me know by 2pm Saturday if you can, I think it'll be ok up to then.
LinchpinLulu 07-12-2007, 19:29 Call me a wimp, but I'd be nervous about a woodland walk in what are predicted to be gale-force winds on Sunday. Will come for lunch though, as this has been ordered-and bring himself. He's desperate for an airing.
What think you Scoobz-and Billysmum, as this is your walk?
ps. Hope you are feeling better, Scoobz.

Thanks Lulu, feeling ok now, think it was a 48 hour flu thing. Re the walk, if you're going to be anywhere in windy weather then on a sheltered walk like this is better than some other places that we have been to that are out in the open. And yes, you are a wimp!
To be honest, I've been keeping my eye on the weather too, and it looks like we're going to miss most of the bad weather tomorrow, but it's up to you. I suppose at your age you have to be careful :o
canada_girl 09-12-2007, 07:32 I've awoken this morning and couldn't figure out why things seemed different. Then I noticed. . the rain isn't trying to crash down through my conservatory! Has it ACTUALLY stopped raining!! I don't believe it. . . . .
Anyhow. . .as Scoobz' PA :hihi: I am posting on his behalf that the walk will take place today and lunch is ordered. But, if you think the temporary clearing in the sky is short lived and you don't feel like taking the risk you can meet us at the pub later. Might be worth sending Sccobz a text later on to find out when we'll likely arrive at the pub so you're not sitting around waiting for us for ages.
Cookman74 and I will be there (with all of your orders!)
Seems like I'm the first one to post after the walk, wonder whether everyone's still sleeping off excesses?
Overall I would say the weather was ok today, especially in view of the severe weather warning a few days earlier. Just a little light rain, although it was weird to see a sea fret below us from the top of Jaw Bone Hill, or was I imagining things
A good walk though, through as much mud as I ever want to see in my life, but lovely and peaceful in Greno Woods with hardly anyone walking there, unlike the more popular woods in the city.
Yet again, I think we had a good welcome and excellent value for money with the buffet at The Old Harrow at Grenoside.
Hope you had a good walk today, sorry I couldn't make it. I have another dog with me at the moment and want to introduce him to groups gradually so thought it best not to come. Will see you all this week though.
EDIT Thanks Mr Canadaman for the jam and chutney :)
canada_girl 10-12-2007, 07:56 A really nice walk - thanks to Billysmum for finding the walk and Scoobz for leading us. . .even though we did walk up that great big hill for nothing :hihi: (I think Scoobz is just trying to keep us in shape!)
Went home and looked up some of the houses cookman74 and I were pinning over; unfortuately none below 200 000£. . .(sigh)
Hope you all enjoy your chutneys, jams ect. . . . .if you would like to see the product list I can e-mail it to you. :)
Thanks for the walk & the buffet Scooz & Billysmum! Enjoyed the walk & the buffet - even though there weren't enough mince pies for 13!
Here are some photos of the walk

It was very nice to meet you Dougie3 - hope to see you soon!
Sorry, forgot to "officially" welcome the new people from Sunday, so it's a belated welcome on board to Dougie, and Hemlock4!
Hopefully we'll see you both again before not too long, how about you and Mrs Dougie coming along to Castleton Sunday Dougie, it's not a long walk, or even come for the afterwards bit?
