View Full Version : "Sheffield toe" - does it exist?
extaxman 03-02-2005, 18:42 Last night in the pub we got talking about Sheffield toe. Apparently this is a condition where the toe next to the big toe is longer than the big toe itself. It is especially prevelant in Sheffield, hence its name.
Normally I take anything I hear in the pub with a very big pinch of salt but one of my mates girlfriends was deadly serious about it and said she had been told about it at school in a biology lesson.
Before everbody tells me to 'google' it - I have done and found no reference to it. Is it me that's getting more gullible in my old age?
I dunno if its called sheffield toe, but the toes next to my big toe are longer than my big toe... does that make me weird?

I remember reading years ago that many ballerinas have a toe next to their big toe that is longer than their big toe, but I don't know of any famous Sheffield ballerinas?!

My index toe is also longer than my big toe, I was always told that it was a sign of superior intelligence.........
Well it can't be a Sheffield thing. Mine is, and I'm from Liverpool with Irish ancestors :P
Wouldn't like to upset you long toed people but----------
Didn't I read somewhere that this is a sign of being gay, or is that just about fingers
Hazel
I'm not a native either but have odd toes like this too.

I haven't got especially long toes (or fingers for that matter), so thats your theory shot down in flames.
Not my theory Nick. Something I read
I think it was if the3rd finger of the hand is longer than the 1st finger, which mine is.
No doubt there will be someone who knows more than me about it.

christine 04-02-2005, 16:24 Hazel, I heard that a man's index finger is usually longer than their ring (third) finger. But in women, it's the other way round. But I have one of each!
And my second toes are the same length as my big toes, but my (French) mum's second ones are longer.
Hmm??

Uh oh, my index fingers are longer than my third fingers, and my 'index' toe is shorter than my toe. So according to all these theories, I should be heterosexual male ballet dancer...
christine 04-02-2005, 16:37 Oh, what I heard had nothing to do with being gay... I can't see how the two would be related!
It was just a difference between men and women. So just the ballet dancer thing to disprove now... hmm...

When I was very small my mum pointed out to us kids that the toe next to our big toe was longer than the big toe. She told us that it was a family trait with her side of the family. I’ve thought no more about it……..until now.

That certainly is scary, but I think the worst of your problems is the fact that you let your Star Trek encyclopedia slip into the picture...

This is a family trait from MY mother's side of the family too...
We called it "monksie-foot". my mum's brother and sisters had it, as do my sisters and me, and my cousins, from my mum's side, too.
The term for having the second toe longer than the big toe is actually called "Grecian Toes", and it's a less-rare thing than you'd think.

Mr Scoop has got Sheffield toe, he can cross them for good luck as well :D !
