View Full Version : Help needed in Sheffield, Ford Fiesta not working
keeholden 02-12-2007, 10:09 its broken down, iv tried allsorts, new plugs checked the dizzy etc, no idea as i have a very limited knowledge unfortunately.
the problem is i need this car to get to work tomorrow, i have no transport as my girlfriend is at work, and i cant be insured on her car.
if anybody with some knowledge of how to sort a mk1 fez could give advice/come and help, would be greatly appreciated + beer tokens.
it nearly started this morning, seems like the fuel is not getting where it should be, or it isnt igniting, there is a strong smell of fuel when i turn it over though
thanks
Kieren
Have you been running it on a low tank of fuel? Is it possible the carb could be blocked? I hope you get sorted soon.
Parked up in front of your car on Friday to take a photo as i was in Phylis. We are having a few issues with Phylis as well. Hop e you get yours sorted.
keeholden 14-12-2007, 07:02 its all sorted now, just flooded the engine. easy to sort out, now i know what to do. its still starting up first time every morning, even in the freezing weather.
whats wrong with yours?
The list is endless. Think its got a fuel problem at the minute. Runs fine sometimes but misfires like crazy the next time you take it out. Ours is still starting even in this weather though. Has been sat on the drive all week last used last friday and fired up fine this morning even though it has been frozen for 3/4 days.
goldenfleece 15-12-2007, 13:04 My MI I's hate the cold starts.....very very tricky indeed recently on these frozen mornings....having to use the old 4X4 as it takes too long to get them fired up......think may have to replace both batteries as they seem a little tired in colder weather....

Hi,
I know you said you now know what to do - but for other people reading this if your carburettor engine floods a trick is to undo the carb dash pot then try starting the vehicle.

Or dont gas it up in the first place! Only joking. The MK1's are a cow to start on a good day, in the winter they are a joke. Our street has been echoing to the sound of the other half trying to fire Phylis up at 6.45am. Needless to say the neighbours havent been happy.:hihi:
keeholden 12-01-2008, 10:23 mine still starts like its a new car, love it, although if i dont rev it it will cut out and flood, as it did yesterday, its done it a few times, need a manual choke conversion sorted on it instead of stuffing a screwdriver down the carb everytime i do it :D
skatiechick, what do you mean by carb dash pot.
all i do is take the cover off the airbox and i can cut the choke off at the carb, open the valves up as thewre is a little hinge type thing there, usually have to stuff a screwdriver down it if im on my own though
Carb dash pots are usually found on SU carbs (some solex as well), they have dampers that need filling with oil, usually known as HS2, HS4, HS6 or HIF44 as I remember (My old metro and montego turno's had HIF's)
I wouldn't think that the carbs used on a Fiesta would have a dashpot.
keeholden 13-01-2008, 18:22 ta for the info :)
mine doesnt have them, its a twin choke weber carb i have
Skatiechik 14-01-2008, 14:22 Yes sorry I made the fatal assumption of assuming you had an SU.

MY Ghia has a manual choke conversion....in fact tried 2 proper conversion kits on it and neither has been very successful really..current one keeps jamming despite several complete strip downs and refits.....in fact, going back to the auto choke and attempting a refurb of that mechanism instead, the manual conversions are just so unreliable.....
