View Full Version : What's that huge tower...
sreed2005 03-02-2005, 16:48 ...to the north of Sheffield - must be near Huddersfield but you can see it from the hills around Sheffield. And what's it for? - it's huge.
Sorry, haven't been in Sheffield too long and it's been intriguing me!
ta :-)
Bikertec 03-02-2005, 16:50 I think your on about Emley moor TV mast:thumbsup:
If you mean just past Barnsley I think it's the Emley Moor radio transmitter. And you're right it is HUGE!

sreed2005 03-02-2005, 16:56 Fantastic! That's the one. I can sleep easy tonight.
It's the tallest building in Britain!
It's freaking massive. If you take the A629 to Huddersfield (a great drive by the way) it suddenly looms into view. Also up that way are 13 wind turbines on a ridge near Holmfirth.
Great stuff.
Tallest freestanding structure, not sure if you can call it a building!
Can you see this tower from Sheffield? Surely its too far away?
I don't think you can, unless you go to the top of the Arts Tower on a clear day with a telescope...
alchresearch 03-02-2005, 21:01 You can see it from the Woodhead and on most hills in the north of Sheffield.
i rode there from ecclesfield about 4 years ago on the mountain bike, its amazing how big it looks even from several miles away,
the security guard wouldnt let me "have a look around" but did open the gate so i could get some better pics,
he told me that the cows in the fields used to get hit by lightning all the time !
when ever i see the tower, i keep expecting it to "lift off"
and thats a great link with loads of pics, thanks,
JJ..
im working top side of bradford and on a good clear day you can see from there
sicubitt 03-02-2005, 21:36 You can see it from bolehills at Crookes on a good day.
Have also seen it in the distance on the way to Herringthorpe from Meadowhall
Draggletail 03-02-2005, 23:49 Emley moor mast. Came down in the 60s in winter due to ice forming on the metal cables that helped to keep it stable. No Tele!:help:
goldenfleece 04-02-2005, 09:40 As digital sattelite TV continues to take over from the old analogue services, this probably now has a limited life span. In 15 years from now or even less there will be no more conventional TV broadcast through the air from masts, but everything will be beamed from satelite. This will make this mast redundant unless it can be utilised for other forms of communication. Not sure if DAB (digital radio) uses masts like this.......
Kristian 04-02-2005, 12:25 GoldenFleece, they'll still need the towers to carry the digital signals when the analogue signal is switched off. See this (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/tv_and_radio/3655216.stm) . There's no mention of everyone recieving signals from satellites.

I wonder if they ever let public viewings from the top bit. The view would be awesome. Unless of course the visibility was about 1m, then it'd be a bit pointless.
