Anyone know where I can transfer an old 7-inch reel to reel tape to a digital or cassette format?

It's a valuable tape so I don't want to post it off somewhere and possibly lose it, I want to take it in person to a trusted place. I don't have a player so I can't even listen to it, I just need someone to transfer the contents to a format I can access.

I suggest you ring around the local recording studios, they are lots of them and they all used to use open reel tape recording machines, but I don't know if they all have their machines serviceable at all times. So you'd be best ringing around a few of them.

Bilge I think (well pretty certain unless my niece has it) I still have an old reel to reel tape recorder in the loft somewhere if you are not in any hurry(can't do this immediately - we have alot of stuff up there and am going for a week away next week) I will try and find it. Last time I tried it it worked but can't remember if I found the button to switch it on with I may be prepared to loan it to you. However you would need to get hold of a cassette player that has a 5 pin socket - the really old type or an adaptor from that to the modern socket whatever they are now. I wouldn't want to part with it as I have loads to tapes that belonged to my parents that has them singing on (they used to run a charity show entertaining in old people's homes).

Pm me and I'll what I can do but it won't be for a while (I'll try not to forget but please feel free to remind me if necessary). :D

Thanks Wendy for the offer, but I don't want to risk me wiping it or damaging it through technical ignorance (as it's not mine).

I just want to hand it to a competent person and pay them a few quid for them to do it. So I guess I'll have to ring round studios as MC suggests, because it's probably not a service there's much general demand for.

Believe me they aren't that easy to wipe! It's only like recording from a cassette to another cassette you still have a record button and a play just the same. Anyhow best of luck the offer is still there if you change your mind.
