View Full Version : What makes Sheffield Forum more popular than the Yorkshire Forum?

I have visited the Yorkshire Forum a number of times, but there is nothing happening on there. A few posters from SF have had a go at trying to start discussions, but there are so few members it doesn't work.

Why is SF so successful by comparison. Is it because we are all so sad here in Sheff and not doing anything better? Unlike our Yorkshire cousins who are living much more interesting lives.

Or is it because we are such a friendly, discursive, social set, willing to share this not only in social settings but on line too.

I think this sums it up so well.

The forummers of course...and their posts. I think it is such a great place, it makes me think, it makes me mad, but most of all it makes me smile and laugh. It is the first place I come for news, information, advice and to be cheered up...

There are so many excellent forummers, I don't know any of them, but I look forward to their posts. I will not name anyone in particular as there are so many great posters...a big thanks to you all.

I think you'll find there are a large number of us being held here against our will

I won't name our captors....they know who they are. They keep us locked in a darkened room with only the forum for company :suspect:

Some have managed to escape but they stop posting so we never know whether they have made it to freedom! :help:

Probably because Sheffield Forum started years before Yorkshire did and has pretty much captured the market as a result.

Yorkshire forum.

Members 432

Most ever online users 453.

Other than the Dales, and Barnsley which I quite like, the rest of Yorkshire is mainly pants. So I wouldn't want to think about it. (saying that, I've just joined:hihi:)

Esp West Yorkshire... even more pants. :gag:

(sorry relatives and ancestors, I'm the first Sheffield born in my family, and thank goodness.):hihi:

There is a similar feeling about places like Bradford, Huddersfield, Wakefield, Mirfield (family from), Dewsbury, Leeds etc :gag: all bad.

:)

You think Yorkshire forum is dead? Try Sheffield steel city. Absolute rubbish, this place is better a million-fold.

Guarenteed you log on there will be three members. Max.

What have you said? :hihi:

Didn't they get a load of SFers pile over there once when this site was being closed for maintenance? i think they joined on mass and had a party, and all got banned for being friendly and happy without permission.

Probably because Sheffield Forum started years before Yorkshire did and has pretty much captured the market as a result.

There's a lot to be said for 'first mover advantage' in this field.

Anyone coming along later with an alternative has to produce something that is significantly better than the original to attract people away. Also, there's the whole busienss of 'network effects'. New sites have few users; other users come along and say 'Not many people, I'll stay where I am', so the user count doesn't go up.

True, although it can be achieved, e.g. Myspace now compared to Facebook and Bebo. The difference is that the newer Yorkshire/ Sheffield Steel City fora are merely copies of the same format used here, so as you say they have nothing better to tempt people with.

Don't agree. Pictures in threads are visual clutter that might slow down the forum's loading time. Pictures in sigs are even more of a tedious distraction. The possible exception is the 'For Sale' section, though given that it's easy enough to insert and click on links to Photobucket and elsewhere, there's no real argument for that either.

The pics on threads are great but if someone has comp trouble or leaves, all the pics vanish and thread after thread is left bare.
In fact, someone could do that deliberately to ruin the forum if they, like me, get the hump often.

hopefully people would only use pictures where appropriate
some of the avatars are off putting but we still have them

You're having a laugh, aren't you? :hihi:

The point about the avatars on here is that they're an appropriate size; much larger and some of them would be a bit of an irritant. As for what they depict being off putting, that comes down to individual taste, and also presumably what the mods consider to be 'family friendly'.

Actually, the fact that SF doesn't support embedded pictures is often regarded as a big advantage by many users in that we're not all exposed to images that we may have no interest in at all.

Having used forums where people are permitted to 'inline' pictures some users show no self-restraint whatsoever and the result is that threads get broken up with images, and it makes it harder to read, IMO.

That and the fact that if you allow pics, you're guaranteed to get some nutter abusing teh system with a pic that's either massive, or not family friendly! :loopy:
