View Full Version : Gas fire .. replacing ..fitting, buying help PLEASE
louisbourg 01-12-2007, 17:58 ANY HELP IS REALLY APPRECIATED
ok ,we have decided to re-decorate the living room (which isn't very big) and have now decided that while we are revamping the room , maybe we ought to replace the council issue gas wall fire that was fitted before we bought the house
now as i say the room unfortunately isn't big enough for a lovely sorround etc , and apparently after visiting 2 shops  we are very limited and that will make it more expensive !!
we believe we have a pre cast flue ... this is very confusing to us personally , but easy if you know
all we would like is either a wall repalcement gas fire with pebbles
or a small hearth which you have to have and a small brass coloured fire with pebble effect ,maybe with some sort of finishing off around it , but as i say , we havn't got a lot of room
can anyone help ... either with ......where to go , or if poss if anyone on here can come and supply and do the job , we would be most greatful , looking to get this arranged as soon as poss , as i want to decorate etc before i put my new xmas tree up :)
many thanks in deed sharon

Complete-Heat 04-12-2007, 22:30 Theres a nice fireplace shop on South Road, Walkley. "Replica Fireplaces". I'm sure they will give you some good ideas.
Once you've chosen your fire and before you but it, i'd suggest getting your current flue/chimney checked out. Needs a flue flow test which a CORGI with a fire 'ticket' can do. It'll be money well spent
Whilst doing that he can also look at your gas pipe run. You may then need a builder to form the opening for the fire and build the hearth. Gas man back then to install, commission, and register the fire with corgi.

twohoots 06-12-2007, 23:25  Hi ive just been reading the thread about choosing a gas fire for a pre-cast flue you cant change the opening for a pre-cast flue , they were not designed for the gas fire designs that are about today, which are inset fires , they were designed for outset
fires , which had a tube off the back into usually a letterbox opening at the back so that just the tube sits intothe flue block.
some fires do say for a pre-cast flue but it can be hit & miss as to whether they work or not it depends on which way the wind is blowing, I wold advise you to think about an Electric fire maybe , they do some lovely hole in the wall types and you wouldnt need a herth , plus you can have the flame effect going when you dont need any heat, hope that helps , I would suggest that you go to a shop who should , come out to look before selling to you, failing that if you go onto CORGIS find an installer website , put in your
post code and what it is that you want fitting and it should throw all your nearest & qualified installers of gas fires. Good Luck
Complete-Heat 07-12-2007, 00:13 Thats why the flue needs checking first. To find out if it is a pre cast flue, and if it is, to ascertain its size. It could be either 13000mm3 or a new style 16500mm3. Either way thats why i recommended a flue flow check and a proper visual as precast flues are prone to cracking.
Inset fires can be installed where the manufacturers instructions say so (MI's). However, you usually have to fit a 'flue cooler plate'
Another option could be to install a room sealed gas fire.
Try b.r.s on Leppings lane, they have four corgi registerd gas fitters and have allways done an excellent job for us.. 2348331.. prices are spot on too
