I started at thornbridge and finshed at birley, leaving in 1989.

Mr Goddard was the headmaster then (or little ern as he was known) with Mr Sheard as the deputy, think he came from frechville when the two schools merged.

The original post was asking for people leaving after 1996 though... sorry, not me.

I was at Birley, but a long tim ebefore any of you guys so far. It was Thornbridge Grammar School in my 1st year, you had to pass the 11 plus exam to get in! Mr Snook was the headmaster then. It changed to Birley Comprehensive in my second year. I stayed to do A levels, as you could take them there then. Fond memories of the Common room in the 7th year. Any other "older" Birleyites about?

Did it change it's name from birley to Thornbridge then back again?
I was at thornbridge in the late seventies early eighties.

I went there and left last year (2004) Hated every second also, although there were a few decent teachers, I tended to be the hate icon of most people there, i.e. chavs, there were too many.

College is much better and on thurs afternoons, me and all my college friends enjoy being on the tram while all the birley kids squash on, stood up and we are comfily sat down and laughing all the way.

BTW. Kirsty, i like the fact that u mentioned Mrs Connely just before you left. What a joke Connaz was.

Hiya Sheffield! I had the strangest dream last night that I had gone to a school reunion, it was very weird!! Just wondering what everyone is doing these days, I was there from 1988 to 1992. Have been on Friends Reunited and have seen a few of you on there. I cant believe that its been 13 years since we left, its flown hasnt it? Wouldnt it been funny if we did have a reunion though, can you imagine it, seeing everyone again even though you couldnt stand some people (mentioning no names!!!). I still live in the area, used to see a lot of people now and again after we had left but not so much anymore. Anyway if any of you are out there and would like the idea of a reunion (I never thought I would be saying this as I couldnt wait to leave school) it would be fun to have one dont you think?

See ya!

I'm new to the forum and have just found this posting. I went to Birley (it was Thornbridge then) and left years ago in 1964. Mr Snook was head teacher and I think it was Mr Latham who was my form teacher. He was a nice chap and I just read that he died, thats sad. There was a geography teacher called Miss Cox, anyone remember her and a Doc somebody, can't remember his name. I heard that they got married.

My 3 children all went to Thornbridge or Birley as it changed its name to. They were all there in the 80s,so we all have some good memories of the place.

You don't mean Mr Iredale do you, as your form tutor? He taught graphics... Don't think I can remember a Mr Ireland... Or was Mr Ireland a science teacher? I seem to remember another teacher who left not long after I started (in 1997).

I don't think she was called Mrs Peacock - she went off to Hong Kong or something and then came back for a week, but we never saw her again...

It's a shame Mr Chapman left, it was better with him. The school seems to have gone downhill quite a lot...

Does anyone remember Mr Sheard, he was scarey. What about Miss Jackson the PE teacher, we all thought she was a lesbian cos she used to make us have showers and stand and watch, uurrrgghh! What about Mr Birkinshaw the English teacher, the last I heard he had become a vicar, he was right funny. In the early nineties there was a competition on the radio to vote for your favourite teacher and that was Mr Birkinshaw, we were winning too at one bit and the prize was having Take That perform at our school, I was gutted!

Mrs Bishop (Maths) was a dragon, she once made me wash of makeup with freezing water and no soap.

Mr Cutts was a laugh and very easy going.

Mr Goddard was head at the time and I remember Mr Clarke (RE) he died during an exam in the gym. I had no idea about Mr Latham :o

I started Birley in 1989 and finished it in 1993, well 4 years was enough. Not the greatest time by any means. Well I can remember Mr Lord, had him every year for Maths a really great teacher. Mr Goddard was a cool guy, I am surprised I liked a Head Teacher. I bet everyone remembers Mr Tilsley (History), a very strict person but knew his history. For scients it was Mr Godison. One of the best teachers was the art teacher Mr Irerdale or is that how you spell it. All I know is when I was there he had black bushy hair and was a very supportive teacher. I had Miss McPherson for my tutor.

Can anyone remember Mr Day? I swear Miss Jackson was in the army before she was a teacher. Now the French Teachers name I can't for the life of me think of, I know she was a thin woman with stern features and silvery grey hair. Its funny how things come back to you.

I attended Birley Junior school the first day it opened early Sept 1952. At the time there was no infants school. Juniors and infants were attending the same as the infant dept was not built The headmaster was named Mr Gillis, I remember some of the teachers but not many. I then moved to what was Birley Secondary Modern School. The headmaster was a Mr Davies, other teachers were Mr Tyson (didn't like him) Miss Smith (nor her) Miss Walsh, Mrs Hollingsworth, Mr Guest, Miss Stringer, Mr Burke these are just a few I can recall at this moment in time.
I did enjoy my time at school, disapline was strictly adhered to, attendance by todays standards was very good. Parents were not going into school to complain about their child getting a "scutch" round the ear, we dare not go home and tell our parents the teacher had clipped us as we would get another even harder.
The only thing I regret about school is that in my time you were not given the opportunity to learn a foreign language. I think that to-days kids should have this as part of the curriculem with many families taking holidays abroad and then moving to other parts of the world.
By the way I left Birley early 60's!!1 Yes I am a Grandmother!!!

God grief!!! Mr Goddard!!! He really did look like Earnie Wise, Mr powers, Mr Walker, Mr Griffiths ( the science teacher with a wonky glass eye...lol
Ms Evans, Ms Pratt, Mrs Schofield and who the devil was that hippy type RE teacher who used to sit cross legged on his desk, drinking coffee with a very suspect smell of whisky to it.

Arrrr Mr Tylsley, looked like hitler! and so it goes on laugh, what a scream!!!
Like I could ever be arsed to actually attend most times but when I did I usually got picked on by some bozo:hihi:
Does anyone recall having to do cross country in the p****ing down snow, across Birley golf course and back down white lane ending with a hard slog up the cowey? Hypothermia and blue knee's:hihi:

I was at Thornbridge as it was then and left in 1985. I remember Mr Walker aka Yorkshire Ripper. I had a fab time at school, looking back :D

Mrs Pratt once shoved a desk into my ribs as I dared to giggle during a lesson, she stunk of cheap perfume

I left the same year as you.. and remember all the above...
Fish lips was indeed a dragon
cuttsy was a great laugh
Mr Clarke. r.i.p

My whole school life was through Birley, first at the infants with Miss Campion as Head teacher and then at the Juniors with Mr. ? as Head. When i started at the Secondary School the head was Mr. Davies (Chunkey?) followed by Harry Lines. Anyone remember the History teacher David Phypers (now a retired vicar working for the Diocese of Derby) Mr. Dickinson doing woodwork and the lovely Pam Moore teaching cookery. I started in 1958 and left (thankfully) in 1969.
Have'd lived away from Sheffield for many years, now living in the cold North East near Whitley Bay

All my schooling days were at the Birley schools, i remember Miss Campion, then we all moved up the driveway to the Juniors where Mr Gillis was the Head Teacher some other names come to mind are Mr Varney Mr Mitchell & Mr Padley

In 1962 we all then moved down to the dredded seniors, we had heard so much about the initiation ceremony we were about to receive from the older kids already there. The first person we met on the first day was Chunky, the Head Master, Mr Davies to his friends. This is when we really found out what school was all about.

I was in Mr Phypers form where we had the register taken before going to the first lesson i think it was 4H. When in Mr Ps History lesson he had a habit of standing behind you and pulling the back of your hair saying that's not right lad, knowing that he now a retired vicar does not surprise me as he was a deeply religious man, though we had Mr Higgins for our RI lessons he also took art

Then there was old Granny Smith who took us for Geography then when she left Mr Shimwell came to teach in her place, does anyone remember the larger than life English teacher Taffy Williams, Mr Dickinson also to Technical Drawing as well as Wood Work, now he was a nice bloke. We started learning the strange French Language with Harry, Mr Lines, who was at that time Departy Head,i could never get the hang of that to his horror.

Mr Burke now here was a man i was glad to see the back of, after our first term, then came in Ray, Mr Mattews he took us for PE he was a good alround sportsman but really liked his Basket Ball and was attached to the Scorpions Team at one time the girls had Betty, Mrs Ellis for their PE lesson, who was/is coach to the Sheffield Hatters Team but i belive she has had a name change to something like Betty Codona.

Ho and Pam Moore was a cracker.

Hi,
Thanks for giving me Mr Gillis, I really could not remember his name. Do you remember Mrs Gabitas in the infants. She really was a snob, maiking her name longer by suggesting it was GABEETAS, bit like Mrs Bucket in "Keeping up appearances"
Do you also remeber Brenda Carnall? She actually lived a couple of doors away from me. Both her and Husband Eric have died as has Eric Mitchell.
Ray Matthews actually went to the same college that my Dad had done a few years before, I think that because I knew this bit of his background and the fact I hated sports, we never really got on. I did get on very well with Mr. Dickenson and indeed Pam Morre, who I still say to this day gave me the chance and inspiration to actually enjoy cooking (My kids were very pleased at this part of my eduacation but that is another story).
Over the years I did keep in touch with Taffy Owen, perhaps my favourite teacher of all, and after getting re-aquanted with David Phypers and hearing his slant on the scholl, realise just what a gem Taffy was, though david did not get on with him at all (or any other teacher as far I can assertain!).
Anyway, if yopu have other memories please come back on line, cheers

Cannot think why i called Taffy, Mr Williams must have been the welsh Boyo connection. Yes i can remember Mrs Gabbitas who i think her daughter went to the school too, i remember a mrs Twydale does that name ring a bell?.
Mrs Carnell, can't remember her, but the old memory is now getting hazy.

I left in 1966 and looking back had some good times there, left school at 4pm on friday and started work at 8am the next morning Saturday. You would probably be in the first year as i left.

Hi,
"Taffy" Owen was very Welsh, during my time at snr school he ran Eisteddfod's and had us all reading poetry etc, great fun (perhaps). Brenda Carnall would have been on maternity leave some of the time you were at the juniors, her and Eric had to eventually adopt their two kids so she would have been away for quite a while.
i to left at 3.30 on the Friday of the summer hols and went to work on the Monday.
Mrs Twydale was at the School for just one year i think, dont think she taught me though. True about the Gabbitas having a daughter at the school, followed by another when i went. The big problem was when she got the older kids to "baby sit" at break and lunch time. Seem to remember that it caused a bit of a rumpuss at the pta.
Must go, actually have work to do,
Keep in touch.

Form tutors: Mrs Westrop, Miss Cameron, Mr Iredale (RIP)

Mr Jones was my Division head when he died. Was a sad day as he was a great teacher. Mr Latham also died while I was there, and Mr Iredale just after I left. I'm sure that school is cursed for teachers.

I know its says Ex-Birley but i will be an ex birley student soon so updates on the teachers.

I'm leaving this year and most of the teachers mention on here have left whilst i've been there. Mr Green left about 4 years ago to the relief of many students.
A lot of teachers left last year including Mr Harding.
Mrs Barton Jones left a couple of years ago and Mrs Machin left just before christmas.
Mr Vickers is leaving this year also.

Mr Walton is still there and is my PE teacher, he is now married. Mr Day is still teaching. Alot of new teachers have started and are really young. My sister started in September 08 and has most of the new teachers.

My Mum went to Thornbridge i think it was if anyone knows her it would be when she was Corker so if anyone recognizes the surname then you many know either my mum or my auntie.

I was in Mr Charlesworths class too in the portacabin. Mr Hoy my 4th year teacher, do you remember him he has a facebook fanbase! I might add though that I didnt join as I couldnt stand the man.:hihi:
Mr Midgley was the music teacher and used to make us do sound exercises he always carried a shoulder bag, which gave us much amusement.

Apparantly Mr Mitchell the headteacher is still alive and well according to Mr Hoy's facebook page. There are some good pics on there if you wanted to look.

Miss Jenkinson played the piano in assembly. I always remember when John Lennon died we had a special assembly and had a minuites silence after singing beatles songs, she was a massive fan. Miss Jenkinson was in tears.

Mrs Hill was my teacher in the 3rd year. Miss Carnell, I heard that she had sadly passed away now. I can remember the extention which housed the "Theatre" not much of a theatre though just a few carpeted steps to sit on. The extention was burned down by arsonists, when I was at Thornbridge very sad.

I was at thornbridge from 79-83 in Mr.Cutts tutor group. 2T-5T. Looking back I had a pretty good time. Does anyone remember Mr Walker ?. He was a chemistry teacher who looked like the yorkshire ripper.:)

Tell ya why i remember Mr Walker... It was a very windy day and going back into the science block, i got my finger caught in the door as it slammed shut, chopping the tip clean off. Mr Walker picked up the finger end and that's my last memory until the ambulance arrived. I was ok to go straight back to school the following Monday, where I had biology with Jesus (sorry, Mr Walker - we all called him Jesus back then). He took my finger end out of a fridge in a petrie dish and we had the whole lesson discussing it (i can't rmember the contetnt of the discussion, but it would have been biology based). I felt soo sick and he wouldn't excuse me from the lesson. What a macabre prick he was. Mikey xx

Also remember the art teacher Mr Tucker and his unruly beard and Mr Sheard was so funny. My maths teacher throughout was Miss Crookes. Have seen several teachers in the last few years like Mr Harding, who doesn't seem to look any different and Mr Goodison, the science teacher. Recall Hallam FM turning up to award Mr Badat the Teacher of the Year award or something once. Mr Goddard was Ernie Wise, too.

We all used to have a large cardboard box with our things in at one time, if I recall they were labelled 'H M Tidy Box' on the lid. There were also some wooden drawers, painted white with black numbers on them, with hand slots instead of handles . . . I took my wife for a walk round a few years ago and they were still there! I leave school in 3 weeks. The affair thing your all onabout with Mr Powers and Mrs Westropp is true i think. Well a couple of years ago she got married and is now called Mrs Powers and has a daughter (might not be his), she still teaches Biology, anyways this is all before my time.

mrs westrop has got married and is now mrs powers??? wow i used to have her. and her husband mr westrop in primary school.

i left in 2006 and it sounds like lots has changed since then. mrs scott was my form tutor and probably the nicest one
