Does anyone remember in the 1980s a football match on television, where a group of supporters climbed onto the roof of the stand.
The supporters were all jumping up and down and the roof collapsed, sending them crashing to the floor.
Q: What match was it?
Q: What happened to the supporters?
Was it a Scarborough, this rings a bell for some reason???
Yes it was. I was there!!!
It was Scarborough Vs Wolves in Scarboroughs first ever League Game (old 4th division) after been promoted from the conference.
The Wolves supporters smashed up the away end of the ground by jumping up and down on the terrace sheds. One of the less than bright ones then decided it would be a good idea to climb up on one of the really high terrace roofs running the length of the pitch above the home supporters and smash that up by jumping up and down on it.
Unfortunatly for him this was made of corrugated iron and he fell straight through it. At a guess this roof was probably about 60 foot high. This wasnt the end of his misfortune because all the Scarborough fans who he had landed on then set about him. The police then sending in manic alsations sending everyone scattering apart from the guy who had fell through the roof.
I dont think he got charged for anything and dismissed himself from hostpital.
If memory serves Scarboroughs manager at the time was a certain Neil Warnock. They (Scarborough) almost pulled out of the football league because of the state of their ground after the game.
Bit more information from http://www.btinternet.com/~upforgrabsnow/50moments.html
"A Wolves fan tests the roofing at Scarborough. And fails.
You might question why we have none of Liverpool, Manchester United or Celtic's European Cup glory nights, or many World Cup or European Championship finals, but have included in our selection what is frankly a piece of hooliganism during a fourth division match in August 1987 between Scarborough, making their league debut, and Wolves. However, if the definition of a TV moment is something you cannot forget on seeing, and moreover wouldn't mind seeing again, it has to go in - a number of Wolves fans scale one of the old stands, and the camera focuses on one man in particular shouting and stamping on the roof - until, with almost comic timing, a gap appears just big enough to take a human form. As a superb postscript, it was reported that despite a fall of 20 feet, the man discharged himself from hospital later that day. Well, would you hang around for long under those circumstances?"
Looks like my guess of 60 feet was way off. Still a long way to fall though.
Kind of asked for it though didn't he?
Of course these days he'd be suing the club for allowing him to climb up there.
Thank you for that Punk,
Dont know what made me think of it , just remember it being funny, and that supporter, obviously in pain trying to leg it. :loopy:
