Please bear this in mind in future. timo 13-05-2005, 08:33 I know Richard, and have had the pleasure of working with him on two singles by Workforce, back in the late 80s. I've not seen him for years, but the last I heard he was living in Crookes. I have very fond memories of him as a nice, humorous and generous guy. I still have the bootleg video of A Clockwork Orange [at the time it was banned- 80s], which he brought back from America. Long may he continue to delight us with his inventive, original music. carcrash 13-05-2005, 13:24 Have you seen Made in Sheffield? timo 14-05-2005, 14:45 I have indeed. I knew many of the buggers too. Susie 14-05-2005, 16:24 Originally posted by Aaarrrggghhh Sense? Susie xx pressurework 09-08-2006, 03:48 Hello I will be traveling to sheffield on sept 11. I would love to see Western Works. How do i contact rhk or someone involved ?? Thank you pw Damon 09-08-2006, 09:20 ^ I don't know a definite answer to your question, but you may want to contact these people: http://www.sheffieldvision.com/ Agent Gypo 09-08-2006, 10:22 What on earth happened with the Richard H Kirk set at Razor Stiletto? It seemed like he only played for about ten minutes. sophiec1979 09-08-2006, 10:35 urm, im not really sure. i was too enamoured with the beautiful gwendoline and engrossed in a conversation about poledancing and salsa lessons with some randoms. yes, it was one of those nights. didnt see you though agent, where were you hiding? x Agent Gypo 09-08-2006, 10:42 urm, im not really sure. i was too enamoured with the beautiful gwendoline and engrossed in a conversation about poledancing and salsa lessons with some randoms. yes, it was one of those nights. didnt see you though agent, where were you hiding? x I left early, Richard H Kirk barely played and the bar was extortionate. £11.50 for two pints of Heineken and a Red Stripe, and £6.50 for a double vodka Red Bull. All in all I spent the most part of £30 on entry and 4 drinks!!!!! I don't go to Razor Stiletto very often but I wont be going if its at Sutra/Pravda again. sophiec1979 09-08-2006, 10:56 im inclined to agree- the bar was a bit knackers. not enough staff, ran out of most draft lager, ran out of cider.....good job we were on the gin! we paid £6 for 2 single gin and mixers per round- which i just stumped up, coz i didnt want to drink bottles of alcopops. other than that, we had a good night, but i think it was because we made it a good night rather than it just happening by itself like previous razors. pity, but id still go again- depending who was on. sophie x timo 09-08-2006, 15:06 Richard's work with Cabaret Voltaire had a much greater impact upon contemporary music than is sometimes recognised. For example, Richard, Steve 'Mal' Mallinder and Chris Watson [the original line-up] once attended a lecture by Brian Eno, acknowledged as a 'founding father' of contemporary British electronic music, at York University in 1974. Kirk handed a rather brusque Eno a tape of early Cabs material, featuring the pioneering use of drum machines/rhythm generators. A year later, Brian Eno released the album, 'Another Green World', which has had an incalculable influence upon modern music. The album features various tracks [ for example, 'Sombre Reptiles'] which make great use of drum machines/rhythm generators. Eno has never acknowledged the influence of early Cabaret Voltaire, yet the influence is clearly there in the legendary album. Agent Gypo 10-08-2006, 15:36 No Escape is great. Multi-layered and just ace. Wow. timo 11-08-2006, 15:54 No Escape is great. Multi-layered and just ace. Wow. Indeed. My all time favourite Cabs track is 'Obsession' with its hypnotic beat and short-wave radio effects. I have fond memories of the lads filming part of their first video ['Doublevision present; Cabaret Voltaire', 1982] at Sheffield University Drama Studio which I got a credit on, having suggested to them that they use the camera skills of my friend, St.John Walker. Happy days. CaptainSwing 11-08-2006, 16:09 Where is/was Western Works? Or is it a secret? For some reason this has been bugging me for ages ... CaptainSwing 11-08-2006, 16:15 No Escape is great. Multi-layered and just ace. Wow. Is that the one credited to 'Saxon'? Another thing I've always wondered is whether that's a cover of a song by South Yorkshire's Spinal Tap prototype band of the same name? Surely not?? timo 13-08-2006, 16:41 Where is/was Western Works? Or is it a secret? For some reason this has been bugging me for ages ... It was, indeed may still be, located at Portobello, behind West Street and rather near to both Jessop's Hospital and the sacred Henderson's Relish factory. CaptainSwing 14-08-2006, 10:09 Thanks timo  I'll have a look next time I'm down there. That's just round the corner from where Artery used to practise (in a room above what's now the Boots in Glossop Road, I believe) - maybe that area should be re-designated the "Experimental/Post-Punk Pop Music Quarter"? [Or "Heritage Zone"?] timo 14-08-2006, 10:34 Thanks timo  I'll have a look next time I'm down there. [Or "Heritage Zone"?] That is a fine idea, my good Captain. Sadly, Sheffield has a poor record where matters of heritage are concerned. Mind you, as Vice Chancellor of Central University Neepsend Tip Site, I recently opened the Martin Lilleker Centre for Poptastic Journalism, and we are in the process of having statues of Richard Kirk, Phil Oakey and Jarvis Cocker erected. So, I am doing my bit in a very real sense. carcrash 14-08-2006, 11:29 Timo, do you know Pete Marchetto timo 14-08-2006, 16:53 Timo, do you know Pete Marchetto I used to know Pete Marchetto [or 'Pocket Pete', as I affectionately remember him] back in the 1980s, when he was a journalist with Sounds. Amrik Rai of the NME was his rival in Sheffield. The thing I remember most clearly about Pete was his genuinely friendly nature, and his exceptionally strong coffee. Haven't seen the cove for around 20 years. Is he still alive? carcrash 14-08-2006, 17:21 He's a good friend of mine. He has been out in China for the last few years teaching and travelling and before that he did South America and before that he did Japan. I think he has only been in the country for about 3 months in the last 8 or 9 years. He came over last year and stayed at my house for 3 weeks last year and has a few problems with culture shock. He has not changed at all in the time I've known him and his coffee is lethal. chri5 15-08-2006, 06:55 My fav RHK track is Testone! He's got some new music out on Sheffield's Dust Science label. timo 15-08-2006, 10:02 He's a good friend of mine. I have found myself now twice the subject of discussion in these pages in the kind of reminiscent tones one tends to utilise for those whose mortal coil has been shuffled off and again I rise to say I am here, I live, commune with me, hear my plaintive cry, doubtless again to no avail. Pete. Pete Marchetto. Pocket Pete. [Pocket Pete? I'll bite yer nadgers the next time I see you, John] Far away mayhaps but breathing still. And who IS Timo? Phanerothyme 16-03-2007, 18:02 Mod.
