View Full Version : Ok I've decided on a date for my wedding...
honeyb35 28-11-2007, 21:47 on a date I'd like for my wedding, and that its going to be a reg office one, now what do i do? Do I ring the reg office to make sure its available first and what will they need to do, see any papers or have any money first, or will they just pencil us in as a 'provisional' booking while i try and find a reception venue? do they generally have morning and afternoon bookings (its a friday in december). While I'm scaring myself with plans, I need a reception venue that allows our own caterers, but has a decent sized dance floor and a bar. I love the look of the bradfield village hall, but not sure if its a bit far away, and what do we do about overnight accommodation, are there any hotels nearby? Help!

Making arrangements to get married (http://www.sheffield.gov.uk/your-city-council/register-office/getting-married)
You both need to give notice that you intend to get married at least 16 days before the marriage. Notice must be given at the Register Office in the area in which you have been resident for the previous 7 days and once given, is valid for one year. To do this in Sheffield please telephone the Register Office on 0114 203 9423 or 0114 203 9438 between 9.00 am and 4.00 pm Monday to Friday, or call into the office (open 9.00 am to 4.00 pm Monday to Friday), to make an appointment.

You can get married in the afternoon any day except for Saturdays. They finish at 1pm on Saturdays cos they have the posh hotels etc to go to but Mon-Fri you can get married 2-3.30.
We are getting married on a friday so we can get married in the afternoon.

1_wed_Angel 13-12-2007, 09:11 Hi honeyb35,
I am a wedding planner,
As long as your chosen date is available, then you can provisionally have them pencil you in upto 12 months in advance. if you go to the sheffield city council website the details are on there, but as far as I know the last register office wedding I planned was last year and some things may have changed, I know that the fees have. But last year the rules were, you both only need give a max 16 days notice to marry, you both must have been resident 7 days in the area you wish to marry, otherwise you also need to notify the area you live or lived in previously their register office.
After that your notice is then valid for 12 months, their tel no is 0114 203 9438 and open 9am to 4pm, when you actually go to the office, when they make you an appointment that is, you will need to both attend and need to take your birth certs, proof of address or addresses if you live apart, proof of nationality, and whether either of you have been married before. If you have been married or your partner, you will need the Decree Nici, you can take your passports as proof too, these are the best things if you have them, I usually advise my clients to take as much as poss to cover every aspect, such as:-
Birth Cert for name & DOB
Passports if have them for Nationality
Driving Licence if have
Utility Bill for proof of address.
Decree Nici is the best for if either have been prev married or if widowed then Death cert.
These cover every aspect then, and you won't be surprised with anything they may ask for too, as you should be covered with these.
If you've been married abroad and have doubts about the legitimacy they will be able to tell you if you take the certificate in with you, as some marriages done outside the UK in certain countries aren't always legal, so it's best to check.
You can get married anywhere in England as long as the registrar is available & as you intend to marry at the register office they will tell you if your chosen time is available but you can get married anywhere in England & Wales between the hours of 8am and 6pm inclusive, the fees are £30 each so for the both of you it will be £60 this is for the notice of intention to marry and muist be paid 3 months before you marry, but check this with the reg office to see if it's changed at all, then the fee for the ceremony is £40 and this is a one off fee again this can be paid upto 3 months before your date, but again check this with them as things may have changed.
If you would like anymore advice or assistance just pm or email me and I will be glad to help you out where I can NO CHARGE.
council website address is http://www.sheffield.gov.uk/index.asp?pgid=1912 just click on register office.
Hope this helps you just let me know if you need any other help, and good luck with your wedding:)
Sincerely x
