well I can only go back to the early / mid sixties and I can confirm that it has always been a chip shop since then.
It was bought by Bernard greeves who owned the other one at the top of Andover Street in the late 70s.
His wife Kath who run it along side of him died some years ago and he was left to run it alone.
I guess Bernard has certainly retired now but he made a fortune from the two chippys.
In the 60s most people went on there summer holidays to some English resort in works weeks, not Bernard and his family though.
They went to Tunisia, Morocco and other " exotic " places which was almost unheard of then.
Sorry to harp on about the owner, this threads about the building but thought I would add a little twist to the story.

EDIT: I do recall that it was mentioned that it was originally a Blacksmiths but not sure about its authenticity.

Speaking of making a fortune from the chip shop, before Bernard and Cath owned it it was owned by Pete Nightingale he used to drive about in a Daimler limousine

I remember going into the white House for chips going back to my early teens. Wasn't Kath quite small and attractive with dark hair. They don't make chips like that any more.......or do they.

Kath was small and I suppose attractive in a funny way, she had a fiery temper too but rarely showed it in public.
They had two sons, Anthony and Nicholas I think who will be touching 40 now.

All I can say is that they sold the best chips, fish and 'cakes that you've ever tasted. They did it right, not like nowadays. Patience was the key. Don't drop the stuff in the pan until the fat's hot enough. Most fish fryers now just can't wait and clearly do not now how to test the fat temperature.

Chips, crisp & brown on the outside, moist and fluffy on the inside. Same with fish. Very hot fat seals the batter and keeps moisture in, providing succulent deep fried fish. Here endeth the cooking lesson.

The last time I visited Andover St was some years ago and "The Whitehouse" was still in existence as a chippy but it only appeared from a sign in the window, to open on a Thursday night (I think it was). Does it still exist as a chippy and if so what nights does it open, anybody know?

Thanks

Great childhood memories of that Chippy. They were very mean with their portions though! But you did not mind too much when you took a bite.
I went to St. Catherines School and our teacher took a great interest in the history of Sheffield especially Pitsmoor. Every Tuesday afternoon we used to take a trip around to these places that everyday we would walk past but did not realise that there was so much history connected to them.
I remember going to the White House on one of these trips and if my memory serves me right it was mentioned that it was indeed a Blacksmiths. It was a hundred years old at the time. This was in 1988/89.

That's funny, I used think that the portions were small but they were the very best tasting as you said. I didn't know that the little building was a blacksmiths, that is really interesting.
I remember at busy times the queues snaking around inside the shop where there wasn't much room and out through the door on to the street. Even though we lived very nearby, I sometimes used to enjoy eating outside sitting on a wall. Even in winter, the steam rising from the freshly cooked fish. Magic!
