I've bought me a freeview telly for the bedroom
I've set it up and tuned it in, but I only have a portable aeriel
It seemed to be working perfect and the picture was excellent.
Now the freeview pictures have gone
But I can still get normal telly, not a very good picture though,

So been to Comet to buy a new aeriel cos I decided it must be that, and the man in the shop says
you can only get freeview with a proper aeriel
not a portable one like I've got, is that right.

You need a wideband portable aerial, preferably powered. Something like this (http://www.accessorystore.co.uk/acatalog/SBC_TT650_Amplified_TV_Antenna.html). Though it does depend on the signal strength in your area.

If you have received digital channels using that aerial, have you moved the aerial around?

It could be that perhaps you need to change the AV channel to view Freeview ? Would explain why you can see fuzzy terrestial TV and not get freeview channels

When you first watched it, the TV may have found the correct channel, and then next time it didn;t. You could try turning the freeview box onto standby mode and then on again - may find it straight away, otherwise change the AV channel :)

the fact that you tuned it in and got a picture while using a portable aerial, proves you can use a portable aerial

it needs to be oriented so it points at the transmitter like normal, but as it's lower down than the main house aerial it'll be affected by ground clutter more, tree's moving in the wind blocking the signal or only giving a signal when it's wet because the signal is bouncing off a tree

your portable aerial would seem to be fine you just need to make sure it's in the sweet spot to maximise the signal

alternatively you can do what I did and split the aerial cable in the loft and feed a coaxial cable into the bedroom

at the end of the day freeview will only be as good as the aerial that supplies the signal and if you live in a good reception area. if you live at manor top your ok if you live in normanton springs you have not got a hope. there is no such thing as a sweet spot for aerials you have a signal or you dont

Yes. I had a problem where I sometimes couldn't get BBC channels, and it was all to do with signal strength, make sure the aerial is in line of sight of a window, as you can lose about 50% of the signal if it's passing through the wall.

u could try a signal booster we use one and get all the channels apart from when the weather is bad
