When I turn on my laptop (sony vaio) it loads up as normal, then decides to restart itself and so the cycle continues. The only way to make it work is to load up in safe mode and do a system restore - does anyone have any ideas how I can fix it and if it even is fixable?

if you have a windows xp cd boot to the recovery console and type chkdsk /r
It will probably spend about an hour dpoing stuff then reboot with the same fault but it sometimes fixes it.
Other than that, format it and reinstall the O/S or system restore.

What happens when you do a system restore? It works for a bit, then fails again....?

If you can get to all your personal files (work, pics, emails, etc) then i'd take a backup of them, then re-isntall xp or use your system recovery cd to do the same.
