benfish   10 #1 Posted November 28, 2007 Hey, I'm from the south so sorry if this question is a little stupid:  What is a mardy bum? What does it mean and where did it come from?  Thanks
 Share this content via...
Plain Talker   11 #2 Posted November 28, 2007 Mardy is a Yorkshire-ism for someone (usually a child) who is perhaps "petulant"/ sulky and cries over nothing/ easily upset. makes a fuss over nothing.  we used to chant in the school yard, "mary bum, mardy bum we'll tell yer mother to smack yer bum"  it's hard to put a finger on "mardy" as it covers a multitude of sins. *Peaches* Â Â 10 #6 Posted November 28, 2007 Nesh is an English dialect adjective meaning unusually susceptible to cold weather. This is a particularly important word since there is no synonym for this use. Usage has been recorded in Staffordshire and the East Midlands, Lancashire, and South Yorkshire. fyy123 Â Â 10 #7 Posted November 28, 2007 My neice is named Mardy. My sister in law was born in Sheffield but immigrated to Australia in the 70's. I'm not sure if she knows what it means and I've never told her - but what a name to call your daughter!
 Share this content via...
Guest   #8 Posted November 28, 2007 Nesh means that you feel the cold easily:  "It's freezing today!"  "No it isn't. You're just nesh!"
 Share this content via...
BasilRathbon   10 #9 Posted November 28, 2007 And here in Sheffield we also use the term "Arctic Monkey" as slang for anyone who makes tedious, derivative indie music.....
 Share this content via...
Annoni_mouse   10 #10 Posted November 28, 2007 Nesh means that you feel the cold easily: "It's freezing today!"  "No it isn't. You're just nesh!"  Nesh can also be used to signify that someone is cowardly. It used to be used quite a bit at football matches  "He neshed that tackle!" Meaning someone pulled out of a dangerous looking collision:)
 Share this content via...
