Left all the rest standing. Nothnig to compare with that yellow richness. You can take your mister whippies/ mister softees thin, bleached white rubbish, and chuck it over Lady's Bridge. steveb2007 28-11-2007, 10:14 No question about it, Taggy's was by far and away the best. Totally agree.I used to deliver the milk, when a kid, round Heeley & the Taggy's depot. Those lovely yellow vans........................ ReginaldD 28-11-2007, 10:19 I can't say I've ever tried Taggy's my uncle used to be an ice cream man for Sanella's I think it was. So they were always my favourite, i used to go round the odd time on his round with him and press the bell and have ice cream. frostiekazza 28-11-2007, 10:43 No question about it, Taggy's was by far and away the best. OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOh how dare you say Mister softee is rubbish , my mister softee is lovely :hihi: Plain Talker 28-11-2007, 11:10 OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOh how dare you say Mister softee is rubbish , my mister softee is lovely :hihi: lol, have to disagree with you Kazza, about "whippy" icecream, it's too thin in texture, and too pale. All you are getting is lots of air. It melts too quickly, too. In the solid ice cream, like Taggys was, it was firm, it was rich, it was creamy, with a lovely yellow "jersey cream" colour. it was delicious. the only Ice creams I have found in the years since the demise of Taggys, that come anywhere near their icecream is Bradwells' and Thorntons', and even those fall short, when compared to Taggy's. manzmanz 28-11-2007, 11:14 Was Taggy's the best ice-cream in Sheffield? I wasnt talking about the ice cream when i said my mister softee was lovely LOL :hihi: Actually i do like the yellow ice cream and Bradwells is fantastic , i sometimes hide a tub in our freezer , just dont tell hubby Ha Ha ! I never had taggy's so cant comment on it . Back onto the thin , bleached softee ice cream (!) , plenty of people do think its fab, we sell loads on our van , must be all the sauce , nuts , sherbert and everything else people ask to be put on it that makes it taste great , Ha Ha !! Weve just started using ice cream from a different supplier and everyones been saying how creamy and rich it tastes , its still white but it tastes alot more like Bradwells ice cream tastes . Just going to get the keys for the van and have a big '99' me thinks !! :D thai 28-11-2007, 12:57 Taggy,s by far the best.Sunday afternoons would not have been the same without one. chumpy 28-11-2007, 13:08 Joe's ice cream was better than Taggy's. Came round the Heeley area during the same years. regards Mick Plain Talker 28-11-2007, 13:10 I wasnt talking about the ice cream when i said my mister softee was lovely LOL :hihi: Actually i do like the yellow ice cream and Bradwells is fantastic , i sometimes hide a tub in our freezer , just dont tell hubby Ha Ha ! Sadly Old Man Taggy died about 30 years ago, and apparently the recipie died with him. :( There's never been anything, since, to compare with it. Imagine the thick creamy Bradwells type ice cream, and then multiply the deliciousness by ten, and you've got Taggy's. My late mother would not have any other brand. Mod_Man 28-11-2007, 13:18 Taggy's Ice-cream was the best, I can just taste it now. The last time I had Taggy's was when I was around 9. Bring back Taggy's. steveb2007 28-11-2007, 13:55 Joe's ice cream was better than Taggy's. Came round the Heeley area during the same years. regards Mick Joe's was,and still is nice, but only as a substitute for the world's no.1,Taggy's. Beery 27-08-2008, 21:13 Believe it or not, I've found an ice cream that comes very very close to Taggys! It's called 'Sweet Cream' and it's sold by a company called "Cold Stone Creamery". Cold Stone Creamery was started in Arizona in the 1980s and it's now going international, with franchise stores in China and Taiwan. They are looking to expand in the UK, so it's possible that an ice cream with a flavour close to that of Taggy's will come back to Sheffield. An ice cream that comes close to Taggys'? Impossible! *goes into raptures, remembering Taggy's ice cream* Plain Talker 27-08-2008, 21:25 Joe's ice cream was better than Taggy's. Came round the Heeley area during the same years. regards Mick Sorry, but I have to disagree with you, Chumpy, there has never been an ice cream that could hold a candle to Taggy's. shanes teeth 27-08-2008, 21:26 Definietly I used to go to my Aunties on a Sunday for lunch and he used to come round about 4pm and we always had one. Even her dog loved Taggy's.. Surely there can be no higher praise. Dogs are notoriously discerning when it comes to ice cream. Beery 27-08-2008, 21:53 Oh. My. God! No! Surely not? An ice cream that comes close to Taggys'? Impossible! *goes into raptures, remembering Taggy's ice cream* It is REALLY close. It has that same sweet yet subtle flavour that Taggy's had. I remember the Taggy's flavour well and I've been looking for that taste for years. I'd even considered trying to replicate it myself, as the flavour was burned into my memory. Until last night I'd never found anything that came close. I'd say this stuff is uncannily close to the Taggy's flavour. It's not precisely the same (as if anything that wasn't made by the man himself could be), but it's certainly 1000% closer than anything else similar that I've tried. It's almost as if the ghost of Mr. Taggy guided the hand of the person making this recipe. I just finished having a few bites of this wonderful stuff and the nostalgia is palpable. If anyone is in the US, look up a nearby store (http://www.coldstonecreamery.com/goo...e_locator.aspx), grab a bite and confirm for yourself that this stuff is really close to Taggy's. rubydazzler 27-08-2008, 23:47 Not just the icecream itself, but the homemade raspberry vinegar, the 'special' wafers with either the jam or the chocolate filling ... I'm drooling just thinking about it ... Although funnily enough I remember the icecream as being white, maybe that was just in comparison to the vile bright yellow Walls brick :) I'd love to try the Our Cow Molly stuff, as I imagine that would be similar, Bradwells is about the nearest to Taggy's that I've tasted. Beery 28-08-2008, 01:54 Actually, I remember it being white too - not pure (Mr. Softee style) white, but more white than the average Walls vanilla colour. Funnily enough, the Cold Stone Creamery stuff I found over here is about the same colour that I remember Taggy's being. anarchist 28-08-2008, 08:12 Was Taggy's the best ice-cream in Sheffield? I think it definately was,by a mile, made from Channel Island milk.mmmmmmmmmmmmm  Anything is better than that whippy crap. It isn't proper ice-cream. It is made from poweder and water pumped up with air. It is nearer to the foam used by the fire brigade than food. H da fella 28-08-2008, 08:21 never liked taggys ice cream, far too sweet and sickly :gag: reminded me of condensed milk :gag: We used to get mazarellas round our estate as a kid and their ice cream was the dogs cogs  lizelard 28-08-2008, 09:25 YES!!!!!!! And the old devil took the recepie to the grave :o Beery 28-08-2008, 13:49 never liked taggys ice cream, far too sweet and sickly :gag: An unbeliever! Persecute the heretic! Deerobe 28-08-2008, 13:54 Unfortunately I never experienced the pleasure of Taggy's ice cream. I have however, experienced "Our Cow Molly's" and Yummy Yorkshire" and both are delicious. nerosun 28-08-2008, 15:28 Born and brought up in old heeley ( tillotson rd), used to play football every sunday on taggys field, then go in his shop after and get my favourite, jam wafer. apparently, taggy didn`t take the recipe to the grave, the ice cream van that parks outside carfield school , the owner is the son of joe who used to drive a van for taggy, and he said his dad knows the recipe but it would cost to much to set up. ps. i remember taggys being more white in colour thn yellow. Beery 28-08-2008, 15:48 ...he said his dad knows the recipe but it would cost to much to set up... I wonder if we would have to torture him to get the recipe out of him? After all, these days torture is legal in some states and US territories. Twitcher 28-08-2008, 16:18 No question about it...what I wouldn't give for a tub now and those jammy and choclatey wafers.......... rubydazzler 28-08-2008, 17:49 I wonder if we would have to torture him to get the recipe out of him? After all, these days torture is legal in some states and US territories. I think we should lay plans ... after all how much could it cost to make a few test runs ,,, just to see if it's a good a we remember it? Jammy wafer!!! I WANT one! NOW .... spritulist 28-08-2008, 23:42 i can say iv never tried it may be i missed some thing out???? sheff71 28-08-2008, 23:53 With Joe's, is it just the one guy (presumably Joe!) in his ice cream van, or is there a fleet of them? He must've been up our road virtually every day for 30 years or so with his van - really nice ice cream, and a top bloke too :) Twitcher 29-08-2008, 13:13 I think the nearest that comes to it in similarity is Mackies, though of course it isn't Taggys Plain Talker 29-08-2008, 18:03 An unbeliever! Persecute the heretic! *PT breaks out her "stoning" beard in readiness*. Farmboy 29-08-2008, 20:03 Never liked it. Too white and not the same richness that Mr Whippy or Mister Softee had. Didn't like it at all I'm afraid. :) Beery 29-08-2008, 22:06 Someone actually admits to liking Mr. Softee better than Taggy's? What is the world coming to? It's like expressing a preference for huge corporations over bunnies, or Satan over Jesus. rubydazzler 29-08-2008, 22:17 Someone actually admits to liking Mr. Softee better than Taggy's? He'll be saying he prefers Lea & Perrins next  Maybe he had his taste buds destroyed at birth by rival ice cream salesmen? Here lickle bubba, eat this, and you'll never know the delights of true ice-cream ... muhahahahahah *evil* nernard 29-08-2008, 22:57 Hi all I am too young to remember Taggy's ha ha, but my husband says it is the best ice cream he ever had. Having said that, I sold an ice cream called 'Smiths' when I owned a shop and he says this was very close. I believe 'Smiths' is made in Chesterfield and is still available. I think 'Smiths' is the best ice cream ever but, as I said I never experienced 'Taggys'. rubydazzler 30-08-2008, 17:34 I sold an ice cream called 'Smiths' when I owned a shop and he says this was very close. I think we must arrange an informal tasting in Chezzie at a near date ... just to check it out. Do they have jammy wafers too? Plain Talker 30-08-2008, 18:03 Burn the witch, burn him! So next time your on safari, pop in!!! Taggy- Ernest Battle didn't make the ice cream he only went round in the van and sold it, it was his brother who made it, I think his first name was John or Jack Battle they also had a sister, Mable, who served & sold the ice cream both from the van and in the shop along with Taggy's wife. After John died Taggy's ice cream was no more. We often talk about the Jam or Chocolate wafers and don't forget the Rasberry Vinegar that you could have as a topping. Happy days.
