hi all - i need advice.........

my parents are very inexperienced with computers and really need some antivirus software to protect their new pc. i've always used norton and have never had any problems using it so suggestesd that they just get that. however my dad decided to 'ask around at work' and few people said they'd had a few problems with norton so now my folks are convinced that they want some antivirus software but are refusing to use norton!!

anyone got any suggestions on other antivirus software thats got a good reputation?

anything to stop my mother complaining about her computer over the phone to me would be a god send!!!

Adaware
Spybot

These are both good for fighting spyware

Mcaffee
Panda
Nod32

I tried using Mccaffe but found it so crap I took it back for a refund. It kept locking my PC up and stopping it starting.

Since then I've found AVG which is free to individual users at the mo. It's really good because it keeps itself up-to-date and frequently scans my PC for viruses. It's found a few and got rid of them stright away - never had any prob's since! :)

Have a look and good luck! -

I particularly like the scheduler which means it stays up to date.

Make that 3 votes for AVG.

If you want a full set of security software, you can do a lot worse than...

AVG Free
Spybot Search & Destroy
Spyware Guardian
Sygate Personal Firewall

If anyone suggests ZoneAlarm, nod, smile & run away...

I used to be a big fan of AVG but have gone off it recently as it has missed quite a few viruses. Now use F-Prot, mainly because it is tiny and uses about a 1/4 of the resources Norton and similar do.

I use AVG and Adaware - no problems and it seems to work very nicely.

The AVG stuff also integrates with Outlook and checks the mail as well.

Nice.

I use Norton, Windows Firewall, Windows Spyware Remover & Spybot Search & Destroy. Got rid of quite a lot of spyware recently and a few viruses. No problems with this lot yet.
