View Full Version : What Positive things does a Uni bring to a city?
Lickable 02-02-2005, 12:12 Other than clubs, pubs and parties, what does a University bring to a city?
How can people make money in such a situation. Has anyone here actually launched a Uni inspired business or franchise? Did it work? Am i sounding like kilroy?
Well, theres the 37000 odd addition to the Sheffield population during term time...
Any shop in the City Centre of any University city would miss them if they went.
I think one of the most important things it brings is diversity - there are students here from all over the world.
Since Totley site closed, I notice the post office and one of the pubs closed (now re-opened).
It bring a positively growing bank balance to the Landlord's and Property Developers!
Janey.

University students are Sheffield's bread and butter!
The gigs fall a bit flat during the summer with no students to appreciate the new talent. (that sounds wrong, but it's true)
businesses are started by people at the university, I had an interview for a development role with a startup company at the university.

coopster1974 02-02-2005, 20:59 We would have had no newbies to throw eggs at from my car.
Obviously this was a few years ago - unless anyone fancies it Friday night? Great fun!!

Students rule.
People who complain about students need to shut up and get a grip IMO.

Lickable 03-02-2005, 11:14 This is obviously going nowhere :)
The reason why i asked was...
My home city is opening its own university, which it currently doesnt have.
I was thinking of starting my own business, which would be student related within the area. I just need some ideas of which route to take before starting a business plan.
Ah, that's different! Students study, drink, eat, sleep and wear clothes (not necessarily in that order!). Most these days also drive cars (as cheaply as possible!).
How about a licenced cafe with wireless broadband (for a daily subscription rather than the usual hourly thing?) That means you don't have the outlay of the computers like in an internet cafe.
coopster1974 03-02-2005, 12:10 How about a drycleaners to clean the egg stains off
It brings lots of single young people... how about a student dating agency?

Open a take away/Pizza shop. Make sure you stay open well into the early hours though!
Double it up with cheap late breakfasts on a weekend.
If you take this advice you will never sleep:hihi:
