(sigh) . . . That wonderfully taken free kick by Chris -Wing Commander - Waddle (Sigh). . . I can see it now, in slow motion - as the ball lifts gently like surfer on the crest of a wave, gliding up above the head of a magnificently organised one-man wall, brushing the scalp of the piggie as it curls it's way towards it's goal.
Up past the flapping arms of 'flying pig'..... and here I have to pause the scene for a moment - - - take a breath - - - then play again and watch as the ball smacks the back of the net, 'Kelly hits the floor, sh*tehouse wonders whats happened and Waddle is off running towards the screaming blue & white army!!!

Living in the past - how dare you.

How can somebody claiming to be a fan not even get the score right?

As for it being "the best goal ever scored in a Sheffield derby", try "the best goal united have scored for a long time in a Sheffield derby".

We have several contenders. Waddle at Wembley, Sheridan in the ZDS (crap competition but an amazing goal), Sibon's volley, and my personal favourite, TC at the sty in 1980

So a (admittedly excellent) shot from 20 yards was a technically better goal than somebody receiving the ball by the corner flag surrounded by defenders, skinning them all before curling in a precise 25 yarder? Or a player running half the length of the pitch and beating half the opposition team before sticking it in the roof of the net? Yeeeaaahhhhhh.

surrounded by defenders !!!! yer mean kenworthy who hardly put a challenge in. let him cut inside then score past terry poole our 3rd choice keeper. as to a bloke watching the ball come down before unleashing a thunderous scissor kick like volley at 90 miles an hour that hit the netting before pressman had put his sandwich down.

Was Kenworthy quadruplets then?! Curran had the ball by the corner flag with his back to goal surrounded by 3 defenders, he evades them all, goes past another, then, whilst dribbling away from the goal, curls a precise 25 yarder into the corner of the net which would have beaten any keeper.

Brown was given all the time in the world as a crappy defence which comprised of Geary, Maddix, Monk and Westwood just stood off him as he swung his foot and connected with a shot which could have gone anywhere but just happened to fly into the net past a 54 year old 60 stone keeper (who as you even admit was further hampered by the sandwich in his hand!)

Browns goal was class Al and tell you what, Like Billy said about Kelly's display at Wembley, That night we hammered you 3-1 if it hadn't been for the 54 year old 60 stone keeper with a sarny in his hand it would have been 10 -1 that night, even as a Blade i will admit he had a blinder that night as he always seemed to against us.

Clearly, Brown's whopper against Wendy was a fluke.

So much so that he repeated it a week or so later in a match against Ipswich.

There were lots of shots which 'could have gone anywhere' that season from Michael Brown.

Indeed, incredibly, 20 of them hit the back of the net. Fluke or what?

evaded them all cos no one put a challenge in sabella (defender:huh:) was the nearest to him hardly renowned for his hard tackling. he did'nt dribble away from goal he ran away from goal before shooting into the far corner past our 3rd choice keeper.

we got hammered 4-0 at the sty and kicked off the park think it was geoff king who kicked lumps out of sabella and our captain mick speight had to be stretchered off. like i said to bulls*** other day all tho a crap display at least an honest one. but never mind that was thirty years ago. i've seen the blades win at your sty a few times and should have been more. but you my porky friend have never never never ever ever ever celebrated a victory at ours.

i have very good memories of the weekend 2 nights in hotel. night before drinking in soho till the early hours with a load of touring bayern munich fans. morning of the match 500 of us turned away from swiss cottage and put on tube. walked round to wendys end of the ground and laughed as loads of pigs ran up the steps must have thought we were carrying urine bombs. after back to swiss cottage to watch grand national that never happened. jumped on tube to camden to meet up with more blades then about 9.00 tube to covent garden before finishing back at swizz cottage and hotel. got back next day about 5 and finished drowning our sorrows in the timbertop shirecliffe till midnight. so where did you celebrate coco interested to know where there were no blades.

When I got outside Wembley that day I was knackered. We'd sung you off the field for 120 minutes and we were knackered. I just needed to have a drink and take 5 minutes.

When we got back to our coach we were next to a coach of blades. We all thought about setting off on a good sing song and letting them know where their place was, but we did the 'charitable' thing, had a laugh amongst ourselves, congratulated each other and enjoyed the moment together.

Then we noticed the blades on the coach at the side were shouting just like you - 'why aren't you celebrating?'. So we did. And we rubbed their noses in it.

We got our coach home, and we celebrated in Sheffield. Where it was all Owls and not a blade in sight.

No. If I remember right, Dave Basset said 'we just didn't get the rub of the green'.

Nothing to do with an excellent deisplay by Alan Kelly. Nothing to do with goal line clearences and hitting woodwork. They were just unlucky. Just what you'd expect isn't it!

I've heard of rewriting history, but "We'd sung you off the field for 120 minutes" is laughable! To say how one sided a game it was for much of the day, The Owls fans were pretty quiet! Obviously it all depends where you are in the ground as to what feel you get of the atmosphere, but the blades fans more than held their own that day.

Most of the United team froze that day, except the heroic Kelly and the 'pacy' Cork, and still we took you to extra time, with all your big name superstars that the Owls fans were going on about all the time.

And as for classic Sheffield derby goals, go back a couple of years when Tonge hit a screamer of a free-kick past your miserable defence, and Ade Akinbiyi (yes, he!) scored with a wonderful finish... and that game could easily have finished 10-1, the most one-sided derby since the semi-final.

The last quality goal by an Owl might've been Hirsty's overhead kick at the Lane, and even then it looked more like he was reaching over to pick up a pasty and slipped...

This topic has taken a turn somewhere
Anyway sheff71 from where I was you could not here your lot until old man Cork equalised, as for your players freezing, well they were simply outplayed and lastly Hirsty did no overhead kick I think your confusing his goal with his celebration:huh:

think the best (if thats the word) goal i saw wendy score against us was from sheridan in that daft cup (may be simod or zenith data) at the sty all of 35 yards at your end. in extra time.

Terry Curran at your place 1979 derby re-match was best one we scored against your lot in my over-rated opinion

It was a great goal, but it wasn't a 35 yarder. He ran half the length of the pitch, beat 20 players* (he loved it that much he went back and beat them all again), and put in from about 12 yards or so.

*slight exaggeration possibly, but it was quite a few.

There have been some cracking goals in derbies but I'd say that and Curran's were the best, although Waddle, Hirst and Sibon also scored some crackers. For the blades, the Brown and Beattie goals were pearlers as well.
