It's worth a quick read. Phanerothyme 02-02-2005, 08:34 Maybe we could compile a list all of our own here. Feel free to add reasons to visit sheffield 1. It's not Manchester. 2... igm1 02-02-2005, 08:36 Originally posted by Phanerothyme 2... 2. Ian Mitchell lives here :P Only kidding 2. A city of sport nick2 02-02-2005, 08:42 I think they were struggeling to think of 15, one of the reaons is "Bakewell Pudding". basshedz2 02-02-2005, 08:42 3. its not leeds! basshedz owdlad 02-02-2005, 08:44 4. Looks great lit up at night 2 Canal basin 3 Broomhill, Ranmoor & Endcliffe areas. Beutiful vibrant areas 4 Hunters bar, Eccelsall & Sharowvale areas. As above & interesting as well 5 Cask & Cutler 6 Fat Cat 7 Kelham Island brewery 8 Gardeners Rest, especially ovrlooking the river 9 New Barrack Tavern 10 Hillsborough Hotel 11 Hillsborough, but none of the pubs. Vibrant, alive. Nice feeling of community 12 General Cemetery. Very interesting & atmospheric 13 Supertram 14 Wicker archers, but not the Wicker. Has a suspended walk way over the river under one of its large arches 15 Five weirs walk, or in my case five beers walk. Interesting walk alongside the canal. Can see some of Sheffields industrial past & present. Also has areas designated SSSI There done it A.B.Yaffle 02-02-2005, 09:08 Sheffield United nick2 02-02-2005, 09:15 I would have put the Botanical Gardens in there. cgksheff 02-02-2005, 09:19 Originally posted by nick2 This is the article...... http://www.waitrose.com/food_drink/wfi/eatingout/northernengland/0502085.asp So to summarise Waitrose: Budget pubs and 3 chic bars. Two eateries in Sheffield and one in NE Derbyshire Kelham Island Industrial Museum and The Winter Garden Millennium Galleries, Sheffield Scene and Don Alexander The Cathedral, Victoria Quays, Meadowhall & "Town Shopping" Jazz Music venues. The rest are outside the city: Chatsworth, Bakewell, The Peak District and Country Pubs. Disco_Cat 02-02-2005, 09:23 Originally posted by cgksheff So to summarise Waitrose: ......... The Winter Garden........... It’s criminal how many people rate the Winter Gardens over the Botanical gardens. A.B.Yaffle 02-02-2005, 09:26 The article did actually mention the Botanical Gardens. They could have included the Ski village instead of some of the attractions which aren't even in Sheffield. cgksheff 02-02-2005, 09:27 It is so funny how common usage means people want to refer to the Winter Gardens but the council (or someone) has chosen to name them in the singular. Tim42 02-02-2005, 09:33 Oh! 5 more things. 1 Botanical gardens 2 Winter gardens 3 New Peace gardens 4 Classic Rock Bar 5 I know you dont have to come here to appreciate this but I want to mention it cos I love it. Hendersons relish. The BEST relish! The ONLY relish! So that brings my list up to 20. Amazing when you start to think things through how many reasons you can come up with purplepippa 02-02-2005, 09:58 Originally posted by Phanerothyme Maybe we could compile a list all of our own here. International, multi-cultural city. 10. Short-ish bus ride and you're out in the beautiful Peaks. 11. Victoria Quays. Fabulous since regeneration. 12. Millennium V&A Galleries. 13. Feeling of community. 14. Being called 'duck'. 15. As an expat (Saffron Walden - oooh, posh!) I get supplies delivered by my mum. Classic Rock Bar? Where? Tell me! What sort of classic rock? Don_Kiddick 02-02-2005, 23:46 OK so put it in rhyme & send it in time and you could be sipping champine http://www.sheffieldtoday.net/mk4custompages/custompage.aspx?pageid=48703 lazyfish 03-02-2005, 07:58 "Thriving bar scene"? Pah. One of the reasons Sheffield is great is that it still has pubs instead of bars. MobileB 03-02-2005, 08:47 Originally posted by Tim42 Just off the top of my head. 1 Town hall. Can see some of Sheffields industrial past & present. Also has areas designated SSSI There done it Town Hall lit up at night? I'm sure that will feature high on the city hotel's publicity brochures! What most people are putting on here are 15 reasons why they like Sheffield, not 15 reasons to visit Sheffield. For instance, you wouldnt visit Sheffield to use Supertram but you would use it why you were here. I'm sure I'm having a deja vu. Ought to get some work done!! alchresearch 03-02-2005, 11:57 Originally posted by MobileB Town Hall lit up at night? I'm sure that will feature high on the city hotel's publicity brochures! I agree. Other than the steel factor, the rest of the reasons are pretty lame and could apply to other cities. There are betters reasons but it seems that they always tend to come from us forumers, rather than official tourism sources. Why is this? HellBoy 03-02-2005, 12:09 The Casbah Friday & Saturday night. If you only visit one club in Sheffield, this has to be it. Stick it on your list of "Must Go" places, before it too late. Best club by far, GREAT music, GREAT people, NO chavs so no BOTHER.
