HELP!! I've just pulled the jack of the end of my Bose headphones - I'm completely useless when it comes to wiring - is there anyway I can fix it?

Join the wires together using spittle.

Tie a reef knot in them. It worked when I bust my boot laces t'other day.

Hope this was of some help.

How much wire is sticking out of the jack? If there is enough to twist onto the bit on the lead then try that - if the break is inside the jack, well that means one thing - new headphones!!

I've just spoken to a friend of mine who's an electrical engineer. He says that I can simply put a new jack on the end of the wire. Why would you think I would have to buy a new pair of headphones?

Calm down Jon ;) . Coopster was only trying to help  .

If you have an expensive pair of headphones then yes, it may be worth replacing the jack but i doubt you'd get the same sound quality. If they were relatively cheap, i'd just replace them.

*Vidster retreats to avoid the oncoming onslaught from Jon* :hihi:

Fantastic - thanks guys. I'll go and get one tomorrow- fitting it.... now that's another kettle of fish. Think I might just ask my friend to do it and repay him with wine!

They weren't cheap they're Bose - that's why I don't want to buy another pair! Why will the sound quality be worse?

Any half decent headphones will have better than average cabling inside and a decent jack plug. A 99p replacement from Maplins will not be of the same quality ;).

It wouldn't surprise me if your old one is at least Gold plated. I can't see you getting one of those for 99p.
Maybe i am wrong!.....It was just an opinion :heyhey:

I sliced up the old one to see what it was like inside... no gold. Do you recommend I buy a slightly more expensive jack?

If they are decent headphones and you use them a lot then buy the best jack you can afford.
The staff at Maplins will be able to advise you on which one ;)

There are Gold jacks available on the RS site @ http://rswww.com for the princely sum of £5.96 [product code 329-9714]. They have :

One piece tip rod for added strength and reliability
Heavy duty nickel handles
Large solder terminals
Nickel or gold plated plug finger
