View Full Version : What do you do when you're bored at work?
When the work is slack and the boss aint around how do you pass the time?
In the past i have come up with various ways to make the day go better.
- take bets on the amount someone who always does something throughout the day does it (we bet on this woman who always went to the toilet a lot or how much the boss said a certain phrase)
- get a dictionairy and blindly point at a word....next time your on phone to customer you have to slip the word in the convo (tricky sometimes)
- oh and last week i poured vinegar in a co-workers water...which amused me for a good 5 minutes.
:heyhey: any ideas? i feel the boredom coming on this week
Don_Kiddick 02-02-2005, 05:39 Put half a teaspoon of coffee graules in the kettle when no one's looking.
Don't be near it when it next gets boiled.
Brown fountain.
This is brilliant unless you work alone. In which case it's not funny the second time
espadrille 02-02-2005, 06:07 Sorry, never bored at work.Too busy to be bored
I used to have occasional moments of boredom, then I found myself managing a couple of projects as well as programming.
Suddenly there's no space in the day for boredom...:(
Still a teensy amount of space for SF though...:)
If I am using equipment that takes aggggges to warm up or an experiment that requires a lot of sitting about :shakes: , I'll sit and read a book, or maybe have a look at the SF. If the lab is really messy I'll go round and tidy everything :P I taught in the undergraduate labs last year, and having a lot of very slow experiments meant I could get all my marking done without having to take it home :D
Hmmm... Boredom in the work place...
I had tricks played on me all the time in my last work place (a call centre)... very annoying but you do see the funny side eventually :hihi:
1. Ball removed from my mouse
2. My mouse/keyboard unplugged from my pc
3. My mouse plugged into my colleagues pc & vice versa
4. Hide my head set
Darrel & Dave who i used to work with were a real nigtmare for this... they were always playing tricks on one another some of them were well thought of... shame i cant remember them all :( here are a few... (cant think of the best ones)
Blue tac the phone hand set to the phone... blue tac the ball inside the mouse... Tie the chair to the desk... Change the chair postion (higher/lower/back rest etc...)
One time... Darrel kept lowering this girl Sam's chair whenever she walked off... one day she mentioned it to us... all very confused as she thought it was actually her chair that was lowering itself everytime she stood up... :hihi: she even tried to demonstrate... but this time it didnt work... she felt so stupid (bless her)... all we could do was laugh!
We always had to turn our pc's off whenever we left our desks... In the accounts dept should anyone walk away leaving their pc on an a colleague notice... a message would be typed an sent throughout the dept via email for everyone to read :hihi: ie: Karl is playing with himself under the toadstool... Nicky's wearing pink knickers
It was a laugh a minute... I miss working there :)

At one place I used to work we were all a bit nerdy (well, OK, a lot nerdy) and found endless ways of messing with other peoples PCs when they left them unattended. From the top, some of the best were:
*) Making the CD-Rom eject on its own at random intervals
*) Remapping two or three keys on the keyboard
*) Aliasing standard commands to do bizarre things
*) Setting up a firewall and blocking outgoing net access
The last one was particularly (too?) effective. The victim had the entire network support dept. busy for half a day trying to figure out why he had no network connectivity :)
:D Swapping over the o and p and m and n keys on someones keyboard is a great way to confuse them... :hihi:
Lickable 02-02-2005, 08:46 Print screen the desktop and set it as the wallpaper and remove the actual icons.
Plug the mice into differnt computers so nobodt has a clue whats going on.
Put cold callers on hold and pass them around, so they think they will actually get somewhere.
Swan_Vesta 02-02-2005, 09:01 Lurk on here and read posts, sneak off for ciggies at every opportunity, use t'internet to get as much info as possible on things I like (i.e not work).
However, the chance to do these much enjoyed activities is slim to nil as works mad-crazy!

/B]
Seeing as we're on IT related ones:
*) Swapping the mouse to left handed (or right handed if it's already left handed)
*) Changing the target of desktop shortcuts to random programs or documents
*) Set the task bar to autohide at the top of the screen
I have known the old 'switcheroo' to be done on monitor cables, and watched people actually try and use the machine that they are in no control of whatsoever. It's even more fun if the person really controlling the machine is in on the joke and can make suitably humerous things happen :)

I did this to my manager a couple of jobs ago. He had gone to an early morning meeting, and the whole open-plan office knew I had done it, and were waiting for him to come back.
When he came back to his desk, I got one of the girls to call him; he picked the handset up, while he wasn't really looking or thinking, and bashed himself in the head with the phone.
The whole floor erupted into fits of laughter, and he demanded to know who had done it. I told him I had seen the cleaners sniggerring near his desk that morning...

Swan_Vesta 02-02-2005, 09:35 A good one is changing someones homepage to something fairly tasteless - some mates have done it to newbies. They learn to lock their pc's after seeing unwholly sights

Ssssssssh someone from a call centre is reading this, you’ll give away my only method of revenge.
I can make myself as busy or as bored as I like in work really. Today I'm feeling very rough indeed, so I have moved everything in my diary from today until tomorrow. So now today is free for me to zone out for a while and generally faff around on the computer. If I wanted to keep myself busy, I'd do some real work in the lab, or invent a project for myself involving as much equipment as possible. Working in a research department has its advantages, which makes up for the poo pay!
mess around on the net on various clubbing messageboards, i-am-bored.com or jengajam.com amuse me too!!!
If I'm bored at work then, I'll prop actually start working. Although kept busy, with t'internet shopping, emails and due to the fact that I seem to have far too much time on my hands, I seem to organise stuff, trips away etc.... currently working on World Cup 2006, well getting tickets to it.

:) GUD ONES
we once got carried away with superglue haha... stapellers, calculators etc....nothing was safe. they all got stuck to the table.
i once made one of them big hat thingys (not feeling bright today) that the pope wears... a few sheets of a4 paper and tape and it luked great....put it on....then in walks the boss as im sat there in the hat.
we also took some bits out of someones chair so the back fell off....that was very funny (although slightly dangerous)
