Help!!

I'm frantically typing an assignment for uni and MS word is typing all in caps from a new line down. I've tried switching the caps lock on and off but it will only type in caps.
I've also tried all the usual technical stuff, i.e. hitting the keyboard, screaming at the screen but nothing is working. The air has turned blue!!

Anyone know whats wrong and how I can fix it, quick!?!?!

Cheers!

tried jamming the shift keys really fast and hard a few times? my old keyboards shift key used to get "stuck" somehow even though it didnt look it... drove me nutty... hense a new keyboard ;)

also, there is an option in the font's selection thing to type in uppercase... maybe you should check that its not been ticked for some random stupid windows reason?

Check to see if 'stickykeys' is turned on.

Is it just in Word, or all apps? Try starting NOTEPAD or WORDPAD and see if it's the same there.

Sounds like it could be stickykeys. Damn M$ all the annoying lame-ass options activate themselves when youre not paying attention, and its impossible how to figure out how to stop them! grrrr

Go to Control Panel/Accessibility Options - there are tick boxes there to turn off sticky keys, and to stop them ever coming back on!

hehe....well..let us know if youve fixed it! :) good luck

Its not sticky keys - I didn't even know what this was until I tried the pressing the shift key several times and it brought up a window about it.

I don't think it was the shift key either because the caps were only from a new line down, when i moved the cursor with the mouse to a higher line the typing was fine, it only happened from where I was trying to flippin' type downwards. And then it went away by itself about ten minutes later.

Completely bizarre.

The quickest solution would probably be to remove MS Office completely (control panel > add/remove programs > remove) and then reinstall it from scratch. It sounds like a lot of hassle but it will only be 5-10 mins work and it will almost definitely solve your problem.

This is SO not good for my blood pressure its blimmin well happened again.

Unfortunately the uninstall/reinstall thing isn't possible because I don't have the CD (I'm at uni, its somewhere 300 miles down south at home).

But I've ruled out for definite the shift and sticky key things. STUPID Microsoft.

the only thing i can think of now is what has been suggested earlier and that you are using the caps font, have you checked it?

eedit -> select all -> change case > sentence case

The post is in lower case, so perhaps it's not a keyboard problem

Does it behave like this if you begin a new document?

Get it posted first class and you'll be sorted by tomorrow.

PS. What happens if you write in lower case in another program and then copy + paste it into word?

That's a good point Strix! If it does do this then it probably just needs the default font resetting.

To do this alter the font as gazza suggests then click format then font when that open clicked the default button in the bottom left corner and it should set it as the default font when you click ok.

Cheers I'll try that next time it happens! It is an intermittent problem and it goes away by itself and seems completely bizarre. I've found a way round it though I just continue the line I was on and then press enter to move it down later and that seems to work. Now I just have to get 4000 words done by first thing friday.......

Thanks for the help!

Check what it says in the boxes on the top left of your screen (next to the font name) on each of the lines in question. Perhaps the problem line has a pre-format of something silly like 'heading 1'?

If a new document doesn't have the same problem, cut and paste your text into a new document (being careful not to take the problem line with you!)

Unfortunately in this day and age we have to submit essays word-processed or they won't get marked. Don't even have to know how to use a pen and paper any more, what is the world coming to??
