View Full Version : East One noodle bar - West One
* Where did you go?
I went with my girlfriend to the East One noodle bar in the new West One development, just off West Street.
* When did you go?
Err, about a week and a half ago (end of August).
* First impressions?
Smart looking exterior (it's brand new!). Looking through the windows I noticed that everyone shares long tables, which seemed like a novel idea. Seemed busy too - normally a good sign.
* What did you do there?
Ate noodles
* What were the staff like?
Yeah, they were ok. We were being shown to our table (upstairs) when I bumped in to a friend on the stairs. By the time we had finished chatting she had disappeared. Nevertheless, we went upstairs and found a table (the only two person table I saw!). After that the service was fine, one waitress (or manager?) seemed to have all her kids there - which provided some entertainment as we saw them stealing pawn crackers ;)
* Was it good value for money?
Yes very. I had traditional "dry" noodles, while my girlfriend had noodle soup. Both dishes were huge and cost around £6-7 each.
* Overall impression
Yeah, very good. A nice addition to the Sheffield food scene - there are too many Italian type places in the centre, so this offers a nice break. A hint for any beer drinkers, they do serve pints of beer, but in doesn't seem to be on menu, so ask.
* Would you go back / recommend it to others?
Yes and Yes
Read a thread a while ago, although I can't now find it again, saying how good the noodle bar is (it still is) and how they generally give tap water instead of expensive water. Went there on Saturday for some very nice noodles, but they now have stuck on the menu signs that say only bottled water available. Are restaurants really allowed to not give you tap water?
I thought it was slightly odd.
im sure that by law you have the right to tap water for free, however i do remember a club in sheffield getting around this by calling it a service charge. :(
My understanding is that it is only venues like nightclubs where dancing takes place where they legally obliged to offer free tap water, this legislation I believe was passed to cut down on drug related deaths. However the drinking water does not neccessarily have to be served over the bar - it may be that they install a drinking water fountain in the toilets.
A quick search for 'noodle' found the old thread.
I've now merged them together :)
bassman-x 25-01-2004, 21:44 east one is excellent, fantastic food at brilliant prices
Bluelunar 03-02-2004, 09:48 can anyone give me directions to go there? i asked in a few posts, where west street is but no one replied me :(
Tony Ruscoe 03-02-2004, 12:25 Here ya go:
East One Noodle Bar (http://www.yell.com/search/DoSearch?state=INI&screen=VAL&companyName=East+One+Noodle+Bar&location=Sheffield)
Edit: Removed link to map as it seems it's totally wrong :mad:
I think that they must have the postcode / address wrong on Yell.com as if you look the postcode up on MapQuest.co.uk, it also returns the wrong place.
Bluelunar 03-02-2004, 16:18 oooh! thx! i think i know where about it is now, i go look for it tomorrow! :D
West Street is one of the main streets in the city centre and you can always get the tram to the West Street stop if you get really lost. East One is in the West One block of flats, which is directly behind the Barclays Bank on West Street, or alternatively at the end of Division Street (the opposite end to City Hall).
Hope that helps.
Tony Ruscoe 21-05-2004, 16:54 Just thought I'd add that I visited East One for the first time last night and it was absolutely fantastic!!! I had #29 (Chaing Mai Noodles - Ramen noodles in spicy red curry & coconut broth, topped with prawns, chicken & bamboo shoot flavoured with lime leaves and juice). I was really dubious about having soup as a main course, but when I saw the size of the bowl I was pleasantly surprised!!!
I'll definitely be going again! :thumbsup: :thumbsup: :thumbsup:
My girlfriend and I go several times a week, the staff have started to recognise us and remember what we order. They're always friendly and really helpful.
They have put out a new menu this week and everything is about £1 more expensive than it was before, but to be honest it's so good in there I don't mind.
I still feel like a spanner asking for a fork though :(

I find chop sticks quite easy and i've got fingers like cows t**s!
I went last friday,the food is 10/10.
I refuse to go now after they stopped providing tap water (I usually have a beer, but like water too). Now we just go to Zing Va.
Overall East One seems to be a poor attempt at a Wagamama type restaurant.
(Wagamama is a chain, with no restaurants in Sheffield yet but it is far nicer than East One. If you see one in Manchester, London, Nottingham Etc, I highly recommend them.

I went to East one a while ago and haven't been since and won't go again!
The service was bad, they got our orders all wrong, we remained calm and polite to explain it was wrong and they got agro with us, pointing at our faces. We asked to speak to the manager as the waitress couldn't speak english or understand us. The manager couldn't be arsed to come to the table. We finally got him to come to the table and he was rude, but he siad pointing wasn't rude in china. We explained it was here! We said we were happy to pay for the food we'd ordered (and it was good food, which we told him) but we weren't going to pay for the random orders they had dumped on our table which we hadn't touched. We were also not going to pay for the meal that didn't turn up! The manager started saying we had to pay, otherwise his boss would beat him up....it all got very sinister and we had to tell him, not to put up with that, we're in the UK now and this sort of thing shouldn't be happening. It was all very shocking, he was genuinely scared that because his staff had mucked up, herwould get a beating!
Maybe this was a one off, but the food was good (the food we actually got!)
mr craig 02-06-2004, 15:20 I went when it had just opened and i know what you mean about the language problems, non of the staff could speak english. Been twice recently and all the staff seem fluent and we had absolutly no problems ordering. The only thing i'd say be warry of is ordering drinks,as i pint of larger will set you back a massive £3.90! :o :(
I think what annoyed me the most, wasn't the fact that they couldn't speak english, but because they couldn't understand us and when they got the order wrong they got arsey and wouldn't take responsibility for their mistake, they blamed us, which I don't think is good customer service. Rule 1: The customer is right! They denied the fact they wrote it down incorrectly. If they didn't understand they should have asked for clarification! The second thing that annoyed me was a cultural difference, but they kept pointing at us to our faces, which I deem and most people in the UK deem rude. We explained (politely) that we found that offensive and they said that it was normal in China to do that. Fair enough, but we weren't in China! It's a bit like those HSBC adverts!
Maybe I'll give it another go, the food was nice after all.

I had to laugh at this. Why? East One and Zing Va are owned by the same bloke, so you're boycotting one place and rewarding him in the other!
I prefer one off places to chains any day.
Hehe, and Roger Cheung who owns them actually devised Wagamama in the first place! :heyhey:
sophiec1979 13-09-2007, 13:18 as this thread is so incredibly old and we are thinking of going here for our works christmas do....can anybody provide an up to date review?
we have nmost of us been to east one, but nobody has been for at least a year or so...and we all know how much places can change! :(
thanks in advance,
x
Kthebean 13-09-2007, 15:55 I dont really like east one as the noodles dont really have enough veg/meat with them. YOu get a huge portion but it is mostly just noodles and a bit samey.
sophiec1979 19-09-2007, 10:57 any more opinions?

BasilRathbon 19-09-2007, 11:02 What's the attraction of going out to eat noodles when you can buy a pot noodle for 50p?
I have been there several times in the last few months. It is not very exciting but is quick, clean and quite cheap. The dishes are pale imitations of anything that you might have had whilst on holiday in SE asia but that is true in so many places. On the other hand, you will offend fewer people with bland food rather than something with a decent chilli/tamarind/fish sauce/etc kick.....
Is it better than the noodle place on London Road ?
No doubt it is more expensive ?
I love East One, and really miss not living around the corner anymore. :( Food is fantastic and reasonably cheap too. Never had a problem with the service either.

Went 3 weeks ago. Totally yummy food, and my boyfriend loved the portion sizes!
DelMonte 23-09-2007, 04:01 jumped up pot noodle, with mardy %%%%%

Far far far better (assuming you're talking about the Vietnamese Noodle Bar). I've been there once and will never go again - menu too confusing, staff too rude and yes the food is cheap but so is Macdonalds!!
East one, I'd happily eat there almost every day - I've tried numerous things off the menu and they've all been superb, I don't agree with the comment above that it's 'mostly all noodles without much else' - I once ate all the beef and veg off the top of my noodles and was full before even touching the noodles themselves! Yes, I'm odd.
theadore 26-09-2007, 11:57 yeah... good place. food is consistant... not amazing but definately good and reasonable.
drinks not the greatest... prob best for dining with a few friends or large group rather than as a couple.
Hello_Nikki 26-09-2007, 12:08 It's not bad, although Noodle Inn on London Road is much better! You get far more for your money and the fried tofu in salt n chilli is much nicer :D
Sheilabowing 26-09-2007, 21:42 I've been going to it since it opened and it's one of my favourite places in the city. The food is gorgeous and I've always found the staff friendly and polite.
re the tap water thing. I always ask for a drink from the menu and a tap water and have always been given both without a problem. I think the no tap water thing is on the menu to encourage people to buy a drink with their meal not to prevent people from drinking water too.
And the New Zing Va is probably the biggest reason I am not a size 10 any more! The best takeaway EVER!
Sheilabowing 26-09-2007, 21:44 Down side is that its not a great place to take little kids.
medicgirl 28-09-2007, 10:13 Was there again last night - Pad Thai - mmm!
Ok Have any of you actually eaten the "authentic" dishes that East one have on their menu in the countries that they were invented?
If you had you would all be as appalled as I am at the "sameness" that are East one's dishes.
If you think you are eating "pad thai, vietnamese style noodles, yaki soba" you really arent if you are eating it there.
don't worry about the lack of "tap water" just think about the food they are trying to sell you.
Eat somewhere that doesn't try to combine all South East Asian food into one restaurant.

The sad fact is that very few of us would eat these dishes if they were 100% authentic. I am an enthusiastic eater who will try anything (more or less) but even I was hankering for some british blandness 3 weeks into a recent trip to China.
