View Full Version : Cheapest site for HD-DVDs?
Topic.
Dad's buying me a HD-DVD add on for my 360 for Christmas, and I want some films to play on it.
I know about Play.com, Amazon, HMV and CD-Wow but I wondered if there's any other cheaper ones around?
The kind of films I'm looking for are Transformers (new one), Batman Begins, Superman and Harry Potter 5.

I use this comparison site for regular dvd's, but I did a search for 'Transformers HD' & it found HD-DVD results ranging from £17.99 up to £31.99 on some sites.
PuressenceUK 25-11-2007, 14:36 Try playusa.com or E-Bay seem to be your best bet.
Transformers is £17.99 for the USA version, but £22.99 for the UK version. Rip-off Britain strikes again.
Oh - and another tip Rich, don't get the 360 add on. Spend an extra £50 and get the Toshiba HD-ED30 player. Why? Well for a kick off it upscales normal DVD's. The X-Box add on doesn't. You also get two films free in the box (worth £40 on their own).
Don't forget to claim your 5 free HD-DVD's too via the redemption offer Toshiba have on at the moment.

Guess you know about the 5 free DVDs with it offer? Best to send off the form now as it's one of those offers that will probably take a month to arrive.
<edit> missed the last sentence in the post above.

I've had a look at the 5 free HD-DVDs offer, and it's not actually that good IMO, out of all 5 films on offer there's only 1 I'd actually want, Hulk.
So it's probably more economical to buy the thing from GAME for £100, and then go in HMV and choose a couple of HD-DVDs I actually want, which I mentioned in the OP.
Also, I'd rather not get a big proper HD-DVD player, I only live in a small Flat so I don't really have room under teh telly for a bulky HD-DVD player, nor do I have any Scart sockets left to plug it in, so teh 360 add on is more economical cos it just plugs into teh 360, and, is £50 cheaper, and that £50 can go towards a couple of discs.
If you want HD-DVDs use the US sites....amazon.com just did a 3 for 2 offer...worked out at about £9 a disc including postage :)

Well still send off for them anyway, you can always trade them in! You're telling me you don't like Serenity? It's an amazing film!

If someone mentioned I could get Serenity for free I would snap their hands off!

Would US discs work on English hardware though?

Yep, HD-DVD has no region coding as yet :) I've never bought discs from the UK except the big cockup they had selling the Matrix Trilogy for £25.
Hmm, *strokes beard, then remembers i shaved this morning*, looks like a quick squizz on playusa.com is in order.
Thanks mate.
This is an HD-DVD made for HD-DVD Format players which produce higher quality picture and sound. It will only play on North American HD-DVD players.
I thought you said there was no region encoding?!

So your buying a HD-DVD addon, and are planning on connecting it via scart?

Nope, it plugs into the console.
I was referring to the idea of a seperate standalone HD-DVD player.
Do you see? :D

There is no point in connecting the X-box to the telly with a scart cable as this does not carry an HD signal. You will need an HD output on your X-Box. Originally I think these were componant but the later models (Elite ?!?) have HDMI outputs. You will also need an HD-TV with either Composite, DVI, or HDMI inputs.
Do YOU see ? :D

There isn't...they're talking crap! Put it this way, I have around 12 titles all from amazon.com, they all play in my Toshiba HD-E1 which is a UK player. The only thing it's region coded for is standard DVDs and will only play R2.
Playusa.com aren't exactly the cheapest anyways.
PuressenceUK 26-11-2007, 13:07 So what are you going to do Rich - watch your HD DVD's in standard definition?
Defeats the object of getting one really??
Cheapest is amazon.co.uk. Get them on the new and used using sellers such as Caiman, Thermite or any other seller with a rating higher than 90%. You shouldn't pay more than £15 a disk.
PlayUSA are reasonably competetive in their pricing, but look out for bi-lingual packaging (they ship Canadian disks which is a bi-lingual country due to Quebec).
As others have stated there is no point using a HD player through scart as this will downgrade the picture to standard definition. You have to connect to a HD ready screen that will have HDMI inputs.

I think you mean component ;) Composite is the lowest quality connection available.

Basicaly what I was getting at :)

I have a HD TV with DVI.
And a HD AV cable plugged into my 360.
