'It's a Wonderful Life' - It's simply perfect in all possible ways.

'Scrooged' - Bill Murray plays, well, Bill Murray really in this update of 'A Christmas Carol'.

'The Long Kiss Goodnight' - Not a Christmas film, but it's set at Christmas and it does have lots of Christmas imagery. Plus Geena Davis is my role model and Samuel L Jackson is just a god.

'Ghostbusters' and 'Ghostbusters II' - Not sure about the first one, but the second one is set at Christmas and New Year. And it's that man again too.

I must admit to rather liking the first two 'Die Hard' films too - they're set at Christmas. Plus the first one has the added bonus of Alan Rickman as the bad guy.

I usually watch 'Singin' in the Rain' at Christmas too; that's the one where Donald O'Connor does that fantastic running up the wall thing (during 'Make 'em Laugh') that the bloke couldn't quite manage in 'The Full Monty'.

It's a wonderful life, every Christmas eve afternoon and also I still love to watch the wizard of Oz and it upsets me if it's not on.

I like "Miracle on 34th Street" 1947, with Edmund Gwenn as Kris Cringle, who actually won an Oscar for it, and there are some lovely sentiments in the film from Maureen O Hara, and Natalie Wood. Its a real family feel good film.

Does anybody know where to get a copy of 'Disneys - Mickey's Christmas Carol'? I've tried to get hold of it last Xmas for the youngsters in a kids club but without any luck.

I think it's one of the few really good Xmas films along with Home Alone, Wizard of Oz, The Snowman, The lion the witch and the wardrobe, Miracle on 34th Street, The Santa Clause and any of the disney cartoons.

Harry Potter.. OK I know it's not really Christmassy but it's better than endless repeats of 40 year old James Bond tosh IMO.

Hark back to the late 80s though when they'd repeat the original Star Wars trilogy every year! Now THAT was classic!

Yes, I think I know not only all the words, to every song- I also know the exact pauses between each line, and the precise pronunciation of Julie Andrews in every word...although I'd never admit to it, in public. People would think I was mad.

Anyone know what films the BBC are planning to dazzle us with this year? Any premieres planned? I'm hoping for the terrestrial TV premiere of Revenge of the Sith (Star Wars Episode 3), it's definitely old enough and has been out on DVD ages and on Sky several times!

Not a film, but I have to dig out The Box Of Delights. Wonderful early 80s kids' series that I remember from when it was first televised, so not only is it magical and Christmassy but it has added nostalgia :)

Theres a Jim Henson film called the Christmas Toy, which i recorded off sky as a kid, it was brilliant, but I dont have a clue what happened to the video, i'll scrabble around for it at home when i go back for xmas week. But i dont have a vcr, and i've looked it up on amazon, and it was £25 or some such nonsense! I really want to see it again. Has anyone else seen this masterpiece?! It was kind of like Toy Story I guess but with muppets/puppets.

Another vote for "It's a Wonderful Life" although I think it is the weakest of all of the US populist film movement (have a look at "Mr. Smith goes to Washington").

I know this next film isn't an Xmas film but I always seem to see it on at that time and that's "Batteries Not Included"

Childhood nostalgia, ahhhhh, they'll be bringing back Wispas next... er...

me neither...we bought it for my nan one year, as she's 91 and all alone, and is always complaining about the garb on telly. so one night i went round, and at a loss for stuff to do, i put that on, but just as i got into it, she confessed she was bored and wanted to watch the garb on telly instead! can't win! and i never got to see the rest! I've watched that many shows about movies (100 greatest....) that i think i've seen enough clips to put it together as one!

I loved it when I was little, but my mum threw all my tapes away a few years ago, boo hoo:(
I don't think I'll be replacing it though, £40 on amazon!!

I always watch Home Alone 1 & 2, Jingle All The Way (Arnie's best film ever, surely?) and also like the Indiana Jones films and The Goonies as Xmas films-why are these films never on TV at Xmas anymore??

"The Great Escape" is on my Top Five list of favorite movies but I'm curious as to why several people on here like it at Christmas.

Oliver! is for life, not just for Christmas.

Definitely!

I once took a party of kids (from the children's home where I worked at the time) to see Oliver on Boxing Day. I was bit taken aback when two 14 year old lads (both with criminal convictions) started crying during the film. When I asked what was the matter, one of the 'toughies' said that they didn't want to end up like Fagin!

I never tire of seeing this film.

I watched (everybody watched) the Sound of Music every year when I was a kid. Then I didn't see it for years, until i was grown up. When I was a kid, I didn't fully understand all the stuff about the Austrian aspect of the politics (of course I knew the Nazis were Bad People). When I saw it as an adult, I suddenly *got* a whole other side of the film. The bit where Christopher Plummer sings Eidelweiss at the concert and the whole audience joins in as an act of solidarity had me a blubbering wreck on the carpet.

It's amazing how you can go back to films you think you know back to front and see something brand new in them.

Thats the same for me, I first saw it when i was 5 and didnt understand the story at all, just loved the music and the fact there were kids in it.

When i saw it years later all grown up, it took on a different meaning, the love story, the nazis thing, the scenery, such a fabulous film, you havent lived if you havent seen The Sound Of Music
