Im in the middle of an argument with my other half. She says that its possible for people to unravel old jumpers and scarves and knitted things so that they can be re-knitted into other garments and I say NO! The wool is too worn and crinkly from being in another shape for ages so its impossible!
Prove me right, ladies, tell me that Im right! Tell me that youve never recycled a jersey into a scarf for instance, come on! Help me to make a fool of my wench!
You are wrong - ask w4b! :D

Damn!
This thread needs to be deleted before my other half sees it! She`ll never let me live it down!
Ok... youre just saying it to.... to wind me up! Its a conspiracy!
Do you iron the wool or something to stop it from trying to resume its original shape? surely a scarf made out of a jumper is going to keep trying to turn back into a jumper again!
You are quite wrong. Some may be beyond hope but most can be undone, re-skeined and gently washed to rid it of the crinkles :)

Skeined? Is that like... straightening out on a loom?

Sorry, I've recycled many a 1980's sweater into hats for the homeless and I can't say that there was a single one that tried to form itself back into a jumper. Rip it out, wind it between two chairs or over the end of the dining table to make a skein, tie it in several places and dunk it in hot water. Hang it up to dry and most of the zig zag will come out. If you're starting with a charity shop purchase you need to have a good look at the seams before you buy to check that they've not been cut and overlocked otherwise you could end up with a lot of short lengths and not much that's knitteable.

Sorry Jabber but your other half is indeed correct. You would want to do exactly what Jill says - and she would know:D
Skeining can be done by winding the wool around the back of a dining chair or someones arms so it makes lots of big loops which should then be loosely tied at regular intervals .
