A group of us from Tinsley had a meeting with a senior police officer and a local MP last week to try and raise the level of policing in the area, even though its quieter than its ever been for the last 3 years. It turns out that our local constable is only local when he is not on course on holiday or away at football match duties.
The people in our area would like very much for a continuous police presence the same as in any other town but we cant get it because they are so stretched.
If we continue to build more sporting venues then maybe the venue should pay for its own police manning and not take the officers from local stations.
Could sporting events use private club marshals instead of police?
Football clubs DO pay for police manning.
what makes you think that this isn't the case for other towns? (Is Tinsley a town, or just an area of Sheffield?).

Football clubs pay for the police presence inside the ground as for any police presence outside the ground this is met by the general police budget. What goes on away from the ground is not the responsibility of the club.

During the last 10 or 15 years there has been an increased use of private stewards rather than Police, Gillingham FC uses private security 100% and a few years ago SWFC played Wimbledon without any police presence inside the ground. I think you'll find that since the 1980's the hooligan problem (although sadly still around) is much less prolific than it used to be and coupled with the increased use of stewards inside the ground the number of police required has gone down. During the (in)famous boxing day massacre game at Hillsborough in 1979 there were over 500 police officers inside the ground!

the reason why coppers leave local stations and police the footy is that they earn very good money doing it! I think your local bobby has been spinning the truth a bit and football is a easy target.
Sheffield Football Clubs letting local communities down
I suggest you give Julian Winter the community manager at SWFC a call and put that statement to him and i'm sure you'll be pleasantly surprised.
so lets get this straight...
hundreds to thousands of people visit Sheffield each weekend to watch football. The clubs employ staff. They provide a service to the community. They provide entertainment. They buy their supplies.
The away fans use trains and parking metres. They use the tram and busses. They frequent pubs, restaurants, clubs, hotels, casinos.
The clubs promote Sheffield on a national scale.
So the fault that there are no bobbies on the beat in Tinsley is the fault of football clubs or resourcing in the police?

Does Tinsley belong to Rotherham anyway? Surely they should pay.
