I've taken the heatsink and old cpu out of my pc, the only thing that is concerning me now what is the cpu die? and where on the cpu do i put the thermal paste? and do i put any on the heatsink, also don't you have to get rid of the static before putting it in?

what is the cpu die?
The "chip" bit in the middle of the "chip". :)
where on the cpu do i put the thermal paste?
Put a small pea-sized blob right on the middle of the CPU.
BTW, If you're using the original heatsink, make sure you clean it of all the old thermal paste before re-fitting.
don't you have to get rid of the static before putting it in?
You should be free of static before you delve inside the case! :)
Make sure you're working in a place where you're not going to easily generate any static and that you touch the bare metal parts of the casing before you go near any other parts.

I cant see any chip bit in the middle of the chip lol, it's just all metal.
sounds like a more modern cpu chip with a heatspreader over the die
do you know what processor it is ?

Yes it's a 2.8ghz pentium 4 northwood socket 478 as shown here: http://www.ebuyer.com/product/82850
So if it's a more modern one do i just put some paste over all the metal and put the heatsink back on?
yep thats a heatspreader
have a look at this thread http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showthread.php?t=272586 where thermal paste application was discussed in fair detail
better than me trying to repeat it and getting it wrong ;)
