View Full Version : Kenny Everett was a genius.
steveb2007 23-11-2007, 09:21 Did anyone watch the tribute to Kenny Everett programme on tv the other night?
The man was a genius, and he had some hilarious characters, such as Cupid Stunt,Sid Snot,Marcel, but my favourite was Angry of Mayfair.Watch this - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E8q_AGKn_hE

Ousetunes 23-11-2007, 09:31 I was and remain a Kenny Everett fan. In the programme (I think it was) Chris Moyles (who) said he was 'ahead of his time'. I disagree. He was of the time and that's why his type of humour worked. Yes, we've had many clones since - particularly on radio - but he will always be unique.
I doubt very much he'd get away with what he managed to in today's politically (in)correct society. He was brilliant and yet it's sad to hear that he was a very unhappy man.
Watching repeats of the Kenny Everett Show reminds me of sitting round the back of the KFC shop in Firth Park eating free chicken. My neighbour's relatives owned the franchise on this branch between 1978-1980 and every Monday night we were invited round for a couple of hours. Thus, Kenny Everett and Minder remind me of these happy times (and KFC aplenty).
Classic Rock 23-11-2007, 11:21 It was all done in the best possible taste!
Looking back, it's very dated now, but at the time he was the best and most contraversial comedian of his time.
The_DADDY 23-11-2007, 11:26 My god that man was funny.
StarSparkle 23-11-2007, 11:37 His tv DIY character - Reg Prentice, I think - just kills me. I've been known to cry with laughter while watching him. It's the pathos... no matter what terrible injuries he inflicts on himself, he still keeps going gamely with the show. Sheer class

I watched the show and I loved Kenny Everitt. He made me laugh then and still makes me laugh now.

BasilRathbon 23-11-2007, 11:49 Unfortunately when discussing classic comedy Everett tends to get forgotten on the ground that he was mainstream, popular and didn;t perform at Cambridge Footlights. Okay he was a bit hit and miss and wasn't averse to the odd bout of sexism but yes, in his unique way, he was a genius of sorts.
Favourite sketch had to be the one where he plays Rod Stewart performing "Do You Think I'm Sexy" with his backside getting bigger and bigger till its twice the size of him. Childish but wickedly amusing......
purdyamos 23-11-2007, 12:01 I missed that tribute programme - I'm missing everything at the moment  - but it is sad and strange how he's been forgotten. For a while he was THE funny man on TV, referenced in every playground every day, in the papers, he was just IT. The one thing that made me feel uncomfortable at that age was how Cleo Rocos was too much like a Benny Hill girl. I saw her on Zeleb Big Brother though, and thought she came across as a very dignified and lovely person who obviously still pined for him. :(
Ousetunes 23-11-2007, 12:10 purdyamos - there was a very touching part of the programme where Cleo Rocos totally lost it. She was saying how when she knew Kenny was dying from AIDS, she wanted to give him all her insides (her liver, her lungs etc) to make him get better.
So she's on screen sobbing hysterically. She clearly loved the guy. I think he was only 50 when he passed on and one wonders what might have been if he (and many others gone too soon, Lennon, Mercury etc) had remained with us that little bit longer.
He's up there with Morecambe without a doubt. (A different generation and IMO a better quality of entertainer. Things were simpler then weren't they. Maybe we weren't all so stressed?)
Marcel Wave was my favourite character, and the Rob Stewart expanding bum stetch was my favourite sketch, though the one where him and Billy Conolly are in drag as two old women is brilliant too.

That and the Bee Gees Parody. Both golden comedy moments IMO.
