Don''t forget that the definition of criminality has changed over time, transportation took in people from a whole range of activities, from the extremely trivial (e.g. stealing a loaf of bread or someone's clothes) right through to murder; for the latter, hanging had been the usual punishment, but the practice declined in the eraly 19th century and the sentence was often commuted to transportation. Many of the early convicts were sent there for things which would hardly earn a custodial sentence in modern times, or a short one if so, and there were also some very talented people among the convicts: the first architect there, for instance, was one. It is now a matter of pride in Oz if you can prove descent from a former convict, more so than from an early free settler. So things are not directly comparable.

Britain might be able to learn a few things from Oz too; votes for women occurred there earlier than in UK, for example. But I won't go on--I know this was a frivolous post, but perhaps a littleserious note might be injected into it.
