What are people's opinions of these two venues please?

Both are ok when they are not full of p***ed-up students.

Cavendish is slightly better IMO

Both are ok I guess, bit studenty for me tho. There are better places on West st, Lava lounge is good and Bia Hoi is worth a go, especially on fri/sat nights. Although Ive heard Lava cant play live (DJ) music no more because of their licence which might hurt it as it was a good pre-club bar.

Both are absolutely dire.

Even when I was a student here, after the first weeks they had lost the limited appeal they had, horrible places IMO, made no better by the fact that since the smoking ban they do actually have a strong smell of vomit! We were dragged in recently by some old friends from Uni...that was a night to forget, it made m think that if you could put all the things I don't like in one...this would be it, not to mention a rather unpleasant incident with a rather amourous gentleman at the bar, which was so brazen it was difficult to be offended by it. The requisite deep fried hangover breakfast/lunch at The Cavendish is not to be sniffed at!

too many students and varsity is way too overcrowded on fri/sat nights, getting served in there is a nightmare...

Getting served in any pub on Fri/Sat on West Street is a nightmare.

I prefer Varisty more, only for the beer garden at the back.

they serve a purpose for west street, the food isn't too bad for the prices and when the footie is on you don't stand there for that long to get served.

Imo they are just awful, cheap & nasty: I would never been seen dead up there in West Street EWWWWWWW .......(being careful what I say as everyone seems to jump on my opinion of places nowadays)

Cavendish is better now its been refurbished. I never used to drink in there before - just seemed really really dirty. Now it's quite nice and they've got loads more lagers on tap now. Still not one of my top places to go but it's ok straight after work before all the idiots pile in. As for varsity it just is not good.

Varcitys ok. i tend to start off in there.
do's get really really busy though and getting served can be a long wait but it do's ease off toward 10 o'clock.

Only been in cavendish a couple of times, again i think its ok.

i like the cavendish as it reminds me of my uni pub,and does vodka and fanta lemon! only been in varsity once but i was ill and had to leave (not through alcohol misuse!)

I would not have thought there were that many chavs in these places. Varsity in particular seems to be quite student oriented.

yes been to both places several times actually. I have never witnessed any trouble but would like other opinions as people have said negative things about them on other threads.

Both are ok when they are not full of p***ed-up students.

why blame students it they can be full of idiots on friday nights when while most students come out in midweek
