View Full Version : Rother Valley's new sports complex.
According to the radio coming back from work today, there are reports that plans have been submitted to Rotherham Council for approval of a new sports and leisure complex to be situated near Rother Valley.
What are your thoughts on this please?
Check out this site below to see whats going on.

The proposed new leisure complex next to Rother Valley country park, on a former mining field? Part of the development will include the largest theatre complex outside of the West End... just the tonic for all those cultured ex coal-miners....
:hihi:
Probably all pie in the sky that will never materialise anyway.
Glad you commented, t020, else I wouldn't have found this (http://www.rother-valley-dog-agility.org.uk/) .
I know it's pretty irrelevant, but it is at Rother Valley, and I've been looking for one for ages
There has been talk of this for years, but now looks like it will happen.
The area has lost it's 'mining' thing now I think, with most of that area been redeveloped years ago.
If this scheme gets permission from the government then Sheffield should be very worried, no wonder they have been seen to be disapproving of it.
The Star article is here (http://www.thisissheffield.net/ViewArticle2.aspx?SectionID=58&ArticleID=933286)
It is time that some money was spent on the park. It was a breath of fresh air when it opened over 20 years ago but is tired and run down now with no visible improvements having been made over the years. Even basic maintenance seems to be lacking now. With private funding the area will hopefully take off and prosper once more.
Seeing the piece on Look North last night I had to have a chuckle to myself when they didn't even interview people from the same County as the proposed development but instead went into Killamarsh which is in Derbyshire. :D
Bad_Hair_Day 01-02-2005, 09:07 I seem to remember another front page story in the Star last year about a development at RotherValley - that was for some sort of outdoor holiday/adventure village - with bike tracks, skateboarding park etc - but nothing ever came of that.
Hopefully this one will be a success, although I hope it doesn't spoil the environment at Rother Valley by overbuilding or plouging a massive road system through the park, as that would spoil what we already have. Hopefully they'll create access to it from the motorway, and maybe they'll look at extending the supertram link from Halfway?
alchresearch 01-02-2005, 11:54 There's absolutely tons of land underused at Rother Valley beyond the old skiing hill around Waleswood. It stretches right to the abandoned rear entrance to the park.
However, it should be used for outdoor pursuits rather than hotels and theatres.

We don't need another centertainment.

It's not actually at Rother Valley - it's on the land next door. It's arrival should stimulate that investment in repairs and improvement that somebody mentioned above.
As I understand it, it is not gong to be like Centertainment - more like Center Parcs, with "extreme sports", golf as well as the hotel, conference centre, theatre, etc.
It should prove to be quite a complex, linked into Rother Valley Country Park next door.
It sounds like a nice Idea, my only concern is for my grandparents, they live on south terrace at wales bar and where they live is lovely and quiet, and very close to the park, when events are happening at the park they are often disturbed by lots of cars going past their house or parking up and going down the lane to another way in, im just worried that it could end up much worse for them when this is finally built.

Not after seeing their site. They claim:
"A number of high profile facilities will include West End quality theatre, concert venues, world class hotels, restaurants and spas. It will be the ideal destination for leisure or business."
I understand that Sheffield Council have objected to the proposals because it would stop people from 'that side of town' using the city centre and other Sheffield amenities. What Sheffield Council don't realise is that many people on 'that side of town' don't go into Sheffield. It would be brilliant to have something 'that side of town' for people to use and access quite easily.
From what I understand Sheffield and Rotherham council are in the habit of objecting to things the other wants to do because it will have an adverse impact on them. Why don't they ask the people who are in the local area what they want? It's in a tricky place because a lot of the 'local area' crosses both Sheffield, Rotherham and North East Derbyshire boundry areas so nothing ever seems to get done because of all the 'one-upmanship' of the bickering councils. Killamarsh is one of the closest places to the proposed sites, along with Wales, Beighton, Aston and Woodhouse ALL of the people in these areas (and others) will bear the advantages & disadvantages of such a scheme.
