View Full Version : I have the sweetest foster kitten ever!
On Saturday a member of the public found a tiny, filthy, flea covered kitten wandering on a road in town. They picked him up, gave him a wash to get rid of the worst of the dirt and took him to South Yorkshire Animal Rescue, who brought him to me.
He's only about 5 weeks old and came with a huge assortment of passengers (including worms, fleas and ticks). He arrived with hypothermia and spent the first few hours in my house down the front of my fleece sharing body heat and being syringe fed warm milk. We are firmly of the opinion that he wouldn't have survived through Saturday night and Sunday, bearing in mind the dreadful weather that we had.
So this little boy is very lucky and also happens to be a total sweetie who is currently lying round my neck purring in his sleep, with a tummy full of Nature's Menu and Cimicat.
Everyone, please meet Alfie (http://s25.photobucket.com/albums/c54/mewsletter/?action=view¤t=Alfie1.jpg). Those who have met him have all agreed that he and his little blue eyes are just the most gorgeous things ever and that photos just don't do him justice. He'll be looking for a home in the new year, but until then he's being washed by Molly and being taught how to look after himself and use a litter tray by Arthur- and being beaten up by a rather-too-rough Idris.
hennypenny 22-11-2007, 12:08 Awww! How do you become a kitten foster parent Medusa? I would love to do that, although I am not sure how my 3 resident cats and 1 dog would take to it.
I foster for South Yorkshire Animal Rescue, who are based in Walkley. If you're experienced in kitten care then I'm sure that SYAR would love to hear from you as a potential foster carer. They're on 2349656.
Basically, SYAR pay the vet bills and supply litter, food and worm/flea treaments. You provide the know-how, the space and the snuggles that bring up healthy little ones.
It all depends on the space that you have available and how your family animals are around non-resident animals. Molly loves kittens (carries them round the house, puts them in the litter tray and washes them when they're asleep), Arthur is a fabulous daddy cat to kittens and spends his time looking after them and teaching them how to be good cats, and my grown up cats are all used to sharing their space with babies. I've even got space in my attic if I need to accommodate a nursing mum with kittens to provide the mum with some peace and quiet whilst they wean and can all be found homes.
I've yet to see a kitten that didn't evoke the 'aww' response, but you're right. He's a beauty alright!
He is lovely Medusa and so lucky to have found you and SYAR. Keep us posted on his progress, I'm sure he'll have folk queued round the bloke to rehome him when he's fit and ready. I'm enjoying fostering too (CPL): it's unlikely I'll get tiny mewlings though, because of working full time, but no doubt I'll see a steady stream of juveniles, adults and oldies over the coming years...
hennypenny 22-11-2007, 12:43 I have raised a litter of kittens (with help from their mum :)), but not sure if that qualifies me as experienced.
We currently have 3 generations, grandma, mum and son. Grandma would be lovely with a kitten (when her daughter was giving birth she sat in the basket and washed them as they were born ), mum would *probably* be lovely and son would probably beat them up :(
My dog would most likely be ok with them, but would try to establish supremecy, and I would have to keep a close eye on her at first.
My main concern would be that mum has chronic rhinitus, and I am not sure if it is down to cat flu virus, as has been suggested in the past, (although it actually seemed to be started with a severe reaction to frontline flea treatment), so she may be a carrier of flu and a danger to a kitten.
Also all the cats are getting on,(16, 15 + 14years old ) and maybe they would preffer peace and quiet in their old age. I will have to think on some more.
He's just eatable!!! Unfortunatly my Rottie would proberbly try lol.
Absolutly adorable

Moonbird 22-11-2007, 20:15 Poor little Alfie, he is a proper little cutie, but where are the other kittens.... that was the first thing that I thought
We have no idea where the rest of his litter may be, but it's a fair bet that they're still out somewhere, whether with mummy or not.

 I hope someone finds them too and helps them, its so cold outside now.
