Has anybody else here got one? What do you think of it? I finally took the plunge this afternoon and got myself one and I'm a convert already!

You're right a toaster is indeed a toaster - but a Dualit toaster is also a style icon!

Jon, I'm with you on this one - there is just somthing about them that I love. They're retro and classic but modern all at the same time!

Can't believe I'm so excited about toasters... :hihi:

Aren't they some kind of a Waitrose Woman wanabe status symbol ? :P

Dualit conform to a lost ideal we once had in this country. Remember when washing machines cost about three month's wages and lasted 25 years? They were repairable. Thanks to a japanese concept for disposal, we are all now able to afford life's little luxuries, but they go in the bin every 3 to five years  enabling us to buy a new gizmo with more modern styling

Dualit toasters do not pop-up as this is the single least reliable part of a toaster. The elements are replaceable. The stainless steel sides will not melt (as I've seen plastic ones do).

And they look durable and cool

Can I sell you a Magimix fryer now? :hihi: Three times the price of your tacky plastic thing, but require no filters because the element sits above the bottom of the oil, so no stray bits burn, hence no smoke and no filters. The whole thing comes to pieces, and everything except the element and electric cord and switch just goes in the dishwasher!

Stop me before I tell you about Sebo Vacuum Cleaners..... :hihi:

Er dualits aren't all they are cracked up to be.

Their main market was always industrial kitchen outfits, schools etc. This is certainly reflected in their overspecified, energy ineffecient designs.

Dualit toaster use a lever and a bar to lift the bread out, no more popping up bread. These bars frequently fouled the bread against the elements in my experience. (I made a *lot* of toast at school).

Their consumer models may be more up to date, I don't know.

The best toasters were the conveyor belt models IMO, although they always took some time to warm up - once you were going, producing 50 slices of melba toast was a breeze.

also, re: harking back to a lost age.

I've seen indesit dishwashers go on for 20 years. Case in point - Our previous dishwasher did 10 years service with the parents in law. Lay unused in a garage for 7 years, then we had it for a further 4. It is now up in pitsmoor, working for another family who have just bought a house, as we swapped it out for a semi fitted model with the new kitchen.

I've seen indesit dishwashers go on for 20 years. That'll be the 'Indesit' that went bust and whose 'badge' was bought by some Italian company called Merloni (or something) in the late nineties then? Service is the same company now too (before anybody digs up any more incompatible ancient machines that used to have a good name)

Edit: Nobody is going to have a conveyor toaster at home (unless they have a really extended family in a really big house :D )

I just used to have a living hell digging carbonized bread from the innards of dualits, so they aren't my favourite machines.

Its built as if it was 100 years old - like many Victorian things - overspecified and very heavy.

I'm sure they would sell coal powered ones if they could.

Ooooooooooh, that's fab!!! I've always wanted a 50's style kitchen for some reason - so forget the radiator, I'll have one of those to match my retro dualit toaster!
Thanks Strix!
