I'd like to insure my dad to drive my car for the few weeks he comes here to visit. He lives abroad and has the International driving licence.
From the quotes online, if you want to insure an additional driver, it gives you the basic choice, "has the additional driver got a full or provisional licence?" do they assume that'll be a british licence or would it cover him?
Cheers

All you can do is read the policy/application very carefully. If they do not specify UK license then your are entitled to to answer the question "Yes, I have a full license".
But this article (http://www.mycoupon.freeuk.com/auto/carinsure.htm) makes me wonder.
Thanks you two. It just seems to me like it would be ok. As long as I'm insured and the car is taxed, my dad will be able to drive it.
why not call your insurance company and ask?

Seems to me this is your best course of action. I'm not sure about International licenses, but I know that army licenses are not valid in the UK - for that reason alone I would double check with your insurance provider.
Anyone with a full driving licence from another country can drive in this country for 12 months without having to take another driving test. Anyone with an EU licence (and certain other countries as detailed on the DVLA site) does not even have to take another test but can drive permanently on their existing licence or exchange it for a UK one.
However, having had a number of pupils from overseas who have full driving licences from their own country, I really think that they should be made to have some form of re-training before being allowed on our roads. In some countries, driving licences can even be bought on the 'black market'.
This does not get round the matter of insurance, and as others have said, contact your insurance company.

Good news, Sony.
Just to confirm, for future reference.
Was that on your insurance?
Named driver?
Was there a premium difference because of the IDL (not UK License)?
Thanks

It was on my insurance ( Tesco) they just added him on for 2 weeks, there was a difference because he didn't have a UK license.
Still for £17 I'm more than happy!!
