View Full Version : Need a kitchen, any advice ?
Hi Guys
We are about to have an extension built and I will need a complete kitchen...
Ikea, Mfi ???
Anyone got a preferance on quality service and price ?
monty789 21-11-2007, 09:34 Not tried MFI but BandQ appear cheaper than homebase. Jewsons and Lavers seem better quality but are about double the cost! good luck
I'm a joiner so have fitted most types of kitchen. It all depends what look you want, a lot of the retailers all sell the same kitchens but at different costs. Ikea are pretty reasonable for the price and you can usually get them the same day. Hope i've helped
squeakyclean 21-11-2007, 10:25 I love my ikea kitchen. For the money, i don't think you can get better.
Try Howdens joinery. You need an account card. Ours came from there and is fantastic, not too expensive either.
If you cannot get an account there then go to mfi because Howdens supply them, Wickes also has some designs the same as Howdens
But Howden's will be built up, whereas Wickes etc are probably flat-packs for similar prices.
Month end best for Howdens they will probably trying to reach targets so offer GOOD prices, but if they've reached prices won't reduce.
And do you want to pay your fitter to assemble flat packs?
Trishtee 21-11-2007, 18:06 Whatever you do, don't buy one that has a foiled surface (will say oak EFFECT or similar) as it will peel off. Ikea solid wood ones are great. If you look at their catalogue they state what the composition is.
cheap ones do . If you go to MFI, Ikea etc etc , expect poor quality and something that wiil look tired within a few years . You will be better off spending a few extra hundred quid and buying the better quality , it will be cheaper in the long run
weenireeni 21-11-2007, 19:38 We've just bought a kitchen from focus. It looks exactly the same as homebase etc, but is less than half the price as they have a sale on. Arrive within 2 weeks and excelent customer service
:)
Thanks for all your help guys, I will look in the places you ahve told me about, my builder hates the idea of Ikea but I am going to have a look.
xx
Just watch the ikea range they are not standard sizes. They work to swedish sizes which are different to ours. This goes for there furniture as well.
oh....lol...Ok I dont know anything about any of this stuff...I never thought buying a kitchen could be so stressful !!
dnairn8417 23-11-2007, 01:46 We got our kitchen from Wickes. price was good and quality not bad.
Buying the kitchen was the easy part, it was co-ordinating the fitter, plasterer, electrician & plumber that was the stressful part.

My Ikea kitchen is pretty good quality, and has a 10 yr guarantee, so I am very happy with that!
That sounds great, how much was it ? Did you get their appliances hon ?

DancingDave 23-11-2007, 19:40 I got my kitchen from Ikea, its solid wood doors etc, the fitter said Ikea was the best quality and the easiest to fit of all the flat pack kitchens available, and it was far cheaper than Homebase or B&Q, you can go to their website and get some ideas.
Purdy's - I have had two kitchens from him in two years. My in-laws and aunty have also had theirs in the last year. You order from the various ranges he has in the showroom at the bottom of Furnace lane, delivery is approximately 1 week if things are in stock and you get ALL with it! No messing on missing parts.
Excellent variety at all budgets.

I purchased my appliances elsewhere, as it worked out cheaper, plus I already had my stainless steel oven etc. I can't quite remember how much the actual units came too, but I think it was around £1500 inc worktops, delivery was £50. In the end I went for the kalsebo beech, and it is lovely.
The beauty is, all the units are the same, so in a few years, you can just change the doors, for a whole new look:)
You can plan you kitchen online, my OH did ours, then we took the plans to the store, where one of the kitchen advisors went through everything with us, to make sure everything was ok with it. They also have pcs in store, where you can access your plans from home.
We cannot fault it at all.
klingon2me 11-12-2007, 21:09 Just got mine from Studio Kitchens. Great kitchen, half the price of Corner Kitchens and cheaper than Lavers.
Service was great. Started and finished in 2 days !!!

pegmosaic 11-12-2007, 21:31 Dont what ever u do go to Kitchen WOrld!!!
We have just had a new kitchen from Purdys on Furnace Lane at Woodhouse Mill. I will never go anywhere else in future. Glyn there can tell you more about kitchens than all the people at mfi focus etc put together.

oatesortho@a 14-12-2007, 19:56 I bought IKEA units for the kitchen and utility - the units came to £900 then I bought solid walnut worktop to make it look more upmarket (That cost £800). So my kitchen and utility together was less than £2K. I was quoted £2000 to fit just the units - no worktops so I said no thanks (wish I earnt £2K a week) and did it myself. It was simple and even buying a router and biscuit jointer it was still about £1900 cheaper than a fitter. Once I got the hang of putting the units (about 2 units) together each one took me 7 minutes. They are very simple a monkey could do it.
I bought my last kitchen from B&Q and I would say the quality is better than Ikea but it costs more for just a carcass at B&Q than the carcass, door and hinges at Ikea. You have to pay £60 Ikea delivery though. B&Q delivery is horrendous it took them 3 months to deliver my oven even though they told me it was in stock when I ordered.
I know 3 other people who have Ikea kitchens and they are all delighted with them. I do not work for Ikea either!
wow a router , biscuit jointer , worktop jig and router bits for £100 . Where did you get them
