View Full Version : Ticking like noise in our room at night
retroboy 31-01-2005, 08:54 Everynight for the last week we can here a ticking like noise in our bedroom - everytime we move to find the source the ticking noise stop (bit like a cricket) - at first i thought we might have rats - but i have found no evidence for that - now i am thinking that it might be some sort of insect - chopping away and the wood under the floor boards -
anybody else had this type of thing going on or is there an expert out there who can firstly tell me what it might be and secondly how to get the thing out of my house.
thanks in advance
muddycoffee 31-01-2005, 09:05 Are you sure it isn't something to do with the heating going off. I have recently had mine on pretty warm, and at night I often get funny ticks as the pipework contracts again back to it's cold state. Could happen with the floorboards too, as some spots seem to get very warm, although I'm not sure about this.
First question is have you recently put your heating up a little higher?
Speedy_Jim 31-01-2005, 09:06 I had a noise that sounded like very muffled fast dripping water in my old house, ever since I moved in. It was like a gentle metallic drip noise, about every half a second.
Dunno if it's similar to yours or not. I never did figure out what it was - there was no leaks in the heating, no drips from the gutter, and no other obvious source of it. I wondered if it was the fridge in the kitchen (on the other side of the house). Perhaps the sound was carrying through the cavity wall in some weird way. Or maybe I was losing my marbles.
Hope you get it sorted - it drove me up the wall till I moved
Once you've ruled out the amourous neighbours. You could try this and just hope you haven't got any of the little blighters!

i've found that heating pipes and radiators cooling down can click in a regular way. Don't see why it would stop if you got up though, unless you were just hiding the noise by your movement.
You haven't got any ticky tape in the bedroom have you ? :P .....sorry I'll get me coat
Being sensible now:) have you had the house checked for wood worm, when it's quiet you can at times here the damned things.

thanks for your help
I think a rodent munching something might make this noise. It would also freeze if it heard you clattering about the room.

Yes mice make this noise - there doesn't have to be any evidence they live quite happily in wall cavities and lofts where they can make lots of noise without you ever seeing them or what they leave behind.
It may be a little random but.....
....... a friend of mine lived here for a while and swore to me she heard some funny noises.
Well, we narrowed it down to these:
Heating cooling
Gerbils on their exercise wheels on midnight runs.
Our kitchen and next doors lounge clock, the sound is amplified through the walls.
I can hear it only when my head is touching the pillow firmly - like it transmits the vibrations a little through the bed frame.
Just thought I'd point them out.
muddycoffee 31-01-2005, 21:49 I sometimes get a funny regular noise in my ear when i'm trying to get to sleep, but it is just my pulse in my neck when I find the pillow wedged under my neck sometimes.
